Just come back from overseas holidays (I know). It’s more than China, Russia and the US who aren’t really trying to change their ways. Greece doesn’t seem to do recycling/clean energy etc. ditto many Central European countries.

more of the world aren’t bothered than are. I won’t stop doing what I can (I know) to live differently, and I’m sure lots of us are. But in my heart I know we’re screwed. It’s going to roll like zones Sci-fi movie, with areas gradually becoming uninhabitable and more and more extreme weather disasters.

I genuinely fear for my kids.

It has never been proven that CO2 emissions are the only cause. Sigh. 🙄

Well no, there's methane too but if course we are the ones releasing it into the atmosphere. It's something like 20 times more damaging than CO2

Agree, it will be like your worst dystopian nightmare. God I wish I wasn't so aware in many ways 😞

If you want to see why we literally have no chance watch Inside Dubai: Playground of the Rich currently on BBC2.

Two limos to take the family of 4 to the airport to the private jet to take them to their other house in Jersey. 25 bags of food for an 8 hour flight. Archway of balloons at the entrance of the plane - yet she states she pays her staff more than the minimum that is £300.00/month

I've never really begrudged anyone anything before but this is making me so angry

surreysarah · 18/07/2023 22:09

We’re apparently worried about climate change yet at the same time, people call for hundreds of thousands more houses to be built on green land. There are new housing developments springing up everywhere you look, often replacing fields and nature.

Swansandcustard · 18/07/2023 22:18

@surreysarah but people have to live somewhere. Maybe if we stopped second home ownership, or non dom ownership of UK property, this might be reduced. Also all the neglected/empty buildings should be seized and repaired and let as genuinely affordable housing. Also stop RTB.

Mate, you can’t even get people to switch their foods when they are clinically obese huffing and puffing just walking down the street with diabetes and wearing enormous sized clothes, let alone tell them to switch foods for the good of their grandchildren and some catastrophe in the future. People won’t make the switch even if it’s slowly killing them right now.

@PurpleWisteria1

I'm obese.

I have diabetes
i huff & puff
i wear enormous clothes (trust me it's for the hood of the nation, skimpy clothes are NOT a look. Anymore).

I was 7 stone wet, I had a virus attack my liver, I got very very ill & as a result got diabetes & a completely fucked metabolism plus other issues.

i gained a shit load of weight.

I'm vegetarian, I seriously low carb. I mostly eat OMAD, I don't eat very much. I drink water and 1-2 cups of coffee a day. I very occasionally have a wine or vodka tonic

I buy as many vegetables as I can locally & in season. I don't eat eggs.

what exactly about my diet would you like me to change??

FFSwhatisthis · 18/07/2023 23:18

Againstmachine · 18/07/2023 10:36

Because we are on Mumsnet, it's no use me mentioning other forums, I don't know what your issue is and I don't care wind it it in isn't telling you where you can post, it's stop having a got at me as you coming across as a idiot.

@Againstmachine

you didn't need to name any specific group of people.

its not me that's the idiot.

Start eating eggs for a first off- extremely nutrient dense, low carb, low sugar and high protien.
In all seriousness if you have metabolism issues then your in the minority. I was really meaning even when someone is overweight / obese (65% of the population) people still won’t do what they need to with their diet to directly save themselves from a very high chance of early death / disease. How have we any hope with the majority drastically changing their diet for something unknown in the future, possibly after they themselves have died?

But it’s not people calling for it, is it? It’s certainly not the people living near by calling for more houses in their areas? It’s greedy developers, back handed payments, deals between ‘mates’ at government levels, Tory donors etc even when local plans have been dismissed in some cases, the building still goes ahead. Greed greed greed is what is all boils down to in every area.

Flickersy · 18/07/2023 10:40

I'm not being funny but that's pretty much what used to happen when people moved very far away from each other. It's only in the last 50 years we've had the luxury of being able to move halfway around the world from our families and still easily see them in person. It's not a sustainable position to take unfortunately - our natural world didn't evolve with this phenomenon built in.

@l@Flickersy not that it matters that much I suppose, but my family moved to NZ when I was 10, I always wanted to come back. I did when I was mid 20's. I'm now in my 50's.

Water used to be drawn from wells, but funnily enough I expect, you expect, water to come from your tap when you turn it on.

life changes & until now mist of us believed fir the better.

i came back here because it still feels like home to me. I did it at a time when I expected to be able to fly back to see my family & friends.

my point was why does Laurie think banning flying for people like me is ok, no matter what other choices I make. If my 10 year carbon footprint is lower than hers, why shouldn't I be able to go & see my mum?

Im not on several flights a year, I walk whenever it's possible, I'm vegetarian, I'm careful with gas, electric, fuel. I'm not chopping down trees & laying astroturf...

why should someone dictate I can't visit my mum??

'Our natural world' didn't evolve with lots of things as they are...

At this point I think our best hope is developing super-intelligent AI and pray it comes up with a viable technology to reduce carbon in the atmosphere.

Yeah people worrying about AI becoming smarter than humans & taking over.. a) it wouldn't take too much to be smarter than humans b) if you've seen our politicians I wouldn't think the AI taking over would be a bad thing.

Fraaahnces · 19/07/2023 03:49

The world is heavily over-populated. The only ways to combat this is via mass sterilization, war, famine or disease. None are remotely appealing scenarios, but they are becoming inevitable.

My grandad ate loads of meat and lived to his 90s so I think that is not true.

I'm not in the UK, but the average life expectancy is increasing here - all the people who are elderly now were raised on meat! I have been taking numbers of attendees for a birthday lunch to celebrate the 106th birthday of a local women, people reaching 100 is no longer a novelty. Just how long do we want to live?

We shouldn't be giving excessive medical care to 70+ age people, I'm nearing that age and don't want or expect medical interventions to keep me alive

Well bully for you! I most certainly don't want to shuffle off this mortal coil in my 70s if medical interventions can keep me alive, and I imagine my friends who are that age, or nearing it, would say the same.

@Teateaandmoretea @WestwardHo1

The list of green house gases includes many gases. But their global warming potential is measured as the equivalent of CO2 over the span of 100 years. You'll often see it written as CO2e, carbon dioxide equivalent.

@Mummy08m It was 29 degrees in Inverness a week ago. We were there and have never known it so hot.

It's been warmer than 29 degrees in Inverness before! The highest temperature recorded was 29.7 °C (85.5 °F) in July 2006 and June 2018.

According to Visit Inverness, "What few people realise is that Inverness is actually one of the driest areas of Scotland with just under 900 mm of rain average per year."

Yes. I have a friend who is a holiday nanny for a very high net worth family. They have no worries about flying her to their various holiday homes via private jet, or by helicopter.

I think I also read somewhere that the US military is responsible for a massive percentage of global carbon as well.

Life expectancy is not currently rising - it's fallen in the last three years

Those who are aged around 100 were raised in their teens and start of early adulthood under wartime restriction and post war rationing. They ate very little meat in their formative years compared to those before and after them, and had their eating habits formed by it, so life-long they have tended to eat better.

We won't see another generation like it (yes there will be groups who eat that well, but it won't be across the whole national population)

The warnings about obesity meaning lower life expectancy have been around for some years now. Acute covid is still a major cause of death, and the covid effects on cardiovascular system (more heart attacks and strokes) on the brain (earlier onset and more severe dementia) and increasing incidence of diabetes are all going to continue to reduce like expectancy.

Well, that's one way of saving on the pensions bill - work until your 67, but only expect normal levels of medical treatment for the first three years of your retirement

"excessive" already doesn't happen, btw

No treatment will be carried out unless it's agreed to be in the patient's best interests. I find the phrase is often used to mean "expensive" or "something for which there is a long waiting list" and the aim is to reduce spending, or to prioritise by something other than clinical need

WestwardHo1 · 19/07/2023 09:49

It's not just about living longer, it's about how much this obesity related ill health costs.

Ideally people WOULDN'T be living longer. They'd be living in good (inexpensive) health until they died suddenly in their sleep (inexpensively) aged about 75. Clearly this is unrealistic.

LuckySantangelo35 · 19/07/2023 10:05

I do think if everyone tried to eat less meat it would help

What is Government doing to encourage us?

Are they placing a major prohibitive tax/tariffs on goods from China? No, because international Trade agreements work both ways.

Are they placing a major prohibitive tax on 4x4s and similar being purchased for use in urban areas? Don't think so.

Are they subsidising Public Transport to make it far more economical to use it rather than drive? Not that I know of.

Are they placing a levy on general waste bins, and say giving a refund of Council tax for the number of Green and other recycling bins used/collected? Don't think so.

Are they placing a major prohibitive tax on air and cruise travel? Not that I know of.

I am sure you can add to the list. I understand that some will say we don't need direction/incentives we should just voluntarily do it. That doesn't work in my view. Those who want to will, those who can afford to or can't be bothered will ignore it.

I do a lot of this voluntarily. No car, no kids, very little food waste, sensible use of heating, washing only when necessary and not out of habit after every wear/use apart from underwear, minimal plastic use when I can, grow salad stuff and have a small veg patch (not always a success but I try!), and so on. I am not religious about it, but I try to be mindful.
