A friend is just back from Spain and spent the whole week indoors as it was "unbearably" hot.
We have just cancelled. Weather may be unpredictable here but at least we can go out !

I've just come back from Greece. It was very hot but there's always some shade to relax in, go in and out of the pool, pool water very cold! We went to the beach a lot too, spent time either in water or in shade or going for a meal....again sitting in shade, plenty of tables under awning or umbrella so very enjoyable. I thought it was a great holiday. Air con inside so slept well. We did find driving tough as air con in car wasn't great so we didn't do as much exploring around as planned and kept drives to short trips (half hour max)- the couple of trips to see tourist sights were so hot ! All in all I loved it and wish I was back! I think the message should be lots of water, high speed, relax in shade or in water, don't do too much!

OzziePopPop · 18/07/2023 00:36

Isn’t that why we take ‘sun holidays’? To be hot and then cool down in the pool? Cooling in the pool is the best bit! Then sun, then pool?

ShabbyChic999 · 18/07/2023 00:42

My last line should read "high spf" not high speed !!!

Yes this. "Europe" ≠ the Mediterranean. Try the Baltic or North Sea coasts or further up in Scandinavia. Plenty of lovely places to spend the summer.

Agreed. The UK is also in Europe. Be more specific when talking about “Europe”.

Threenow · 18/07/2023 03:32

Where I live we have temps in the 30s and sometimes up to 40 degrees. Amazingly people still go out, go to work, some even work outdoors! Surely you weren't going to be stuck in a desert with no shade or water?

Minimochi · 18/07/2023 04:35

We are in "Europe" and have had lots of lovely sunny days with temperatures around 25-35 degrees these past few weeks. Currently waiting for the summer holidays to start. People are still at work, kids are still at school. We don't have aircon at home but our bedrooms are in the basement, so they always stay cool in the summer months.
I've really enjoyed being able to use the pool at home in the afternoons/evenings. DS spends his weekends in the water and it's just been lovely so far. I hope the weather is going to stay like this for August as well.

I live in ‘Europe’ and it’s been warm but not unbearable. Next week we’re off to Thailand to escape the heat!

It's warm (to hot) in Thailand.

itsgettingweird · 18/07/2023 04:47

I lived for many years in the Canary Islands. The weather wouldn't put me off but I can see why for some it would.

I agree though about travelling to Europe. Just choose somewhere cooler abroad!

LegalAlienated · 18/07/2023 06:08

My perimenopausal body was really struggling in Spain last year when there wasn'f even a heatwave. We decided not to do any sightseeing, just relax by the beach.
We're going away again this year, I can't wait to 'fill up' on sunshine then complain. 😁

notimagain · 18/07/2023 06:20

Another one arriving to pointing out Europe is a big place.

our part of SW France has so far at least had a fairly typical summer that started with a wet June..it was only in July that picked up to the generally normal mid to high 20s with a few 30 plusses thrown in on, such as is forecast today.

SnotRag81 · 18/07/2023 06:24

You’ve cancelled your holiday as someone has come back from Spain saying it was hot? Seriously?

lavenderlou · 18/07/2023 06:25

I was in France last summer and it didn't drop below 38 degrees. It wasn't great as a holiday because it really was too hot to do anything (and we were in our caravan for most of it!). We went to the beach a few times but the sand was unbearably hot.

However, I know it's unusual for France to get that hot. I wouldn't book Southern Spain, Greece or Turkey etc that routinely get temperatures of 35+. I think it's manageable if you are flitting between air conditioned hotel and pool but I like to go out and about.

JMSA · 18/07/2023 06:26

I'm in Greece at the moment. Yes, it's hot, but what else would one expect?!
We've been sensible and had a great time.

User1864876 · 18/07/2023 06:27

We always have, we use our touring caravan in the uk in the summer and go to southern Europe in Spring and Autumn, have done this for years

ChimChimeny · 18/07/2023 06:29

There is absolutely no way we're cancelling a holiday we've looked forward to for about 18 months! We're going on a cruise so at least it'll be breezy, we'll do a bit of sightseeing in the morning then back to the ship for the afternoon to sit in the shade/indoor activities/siesta. Can't wait!

crostini · 18/07/2023 06:30

It's a bit crazy to cancel. It doesn't matter if it's mega hot on holiday because you're at the beach or pool, with a drink In hand. It's not like you're suffering, trying to live normal life in it.

Caspianberg · 18/07/2023 06:30

It’s hot where we live ‘ in Europe’. About 30-35 daily recently.
Its always hot in summer though. It has been warmer than that some days, but it’s fine, you adapt. We still have work/ life to get on with. Going on holiday and sitting by a pool with air con in hotel isn’t exactly arduous.

User1864876 · 18/07/2023 06:32

I wouldn't have cancelled, it's just unfortunate like booking a wet week in the UK but if I was that bothered about the heat I wouldn't have booked in July/August in the first place

AngelsWithSilverWings · 18/07/2023 06:33

I'm in Corfu. It's hotter than I've ever known it here but there is still a nice breeze and on the beach it feels quite comfortable. I wouldn't want to be doing day trips or walking around exploring like we usually do.

We have air con in the room and lots of shade around the hotel pool.

VisionsOfSplendour · 18/07/2023 06:34

You've already cancelled so what's the point of asking ? If you're happy with the decision that's all that matters

RedRobyn2021 · 18/07/2023 06:40

My mum just got back from Portugal where they were having highs of 38 degrees, can't think of anything worse tbh. Isn't it usually this hot at this time of year though?

I went for a week in May and they happened the have some unusually hot weather, it went to 32 whilst we visited but the next week it dropped

SoTheyAre · 18/07/2023 06:43

That is a bit unnecessary op but OTOH the less air travel the better for the environment.

What I don't get is if this is all due to global warming why is anyone still travelling by plane?
