A friend is just back from Spain and spent the whole week indoors as it was "unbearably" hot.
We have just cancelled. Weather may be unpredictable here but at least we can go out !

Got back from A Greek Island yesterday.

It was holiday hot. We had a lovely time. I can't vouch for the rest of Europe.

User1864876 · 18/07/2023 07:22

It is alway hot in July and August though, probably a bit hotter this year but I can't understand anyone booking in July or August if they don't like the heat as the chance of it being hotter is quite high

Re climate change and flying, a billionaire will holiday on their mega yacht and commission the pilot of their private plane to fly from the French Riviera to Russia and back to bring them a pot of the World's finest caviar for dinner!
I think your average working Joe can take a 2 hour flight to Spain once a year.

So you are right that, globally, the wealthiest 2% have by far the highest carbon footprint. But the wealthiest 10% take the flight. Why compare yourself to the the wealthiest 2%. Why not compare yourself to masses who populate the areas that are getting effected first and worst? Who have the lowest carbon emissions?

Your average Joe can keep taking a flight to Spain, if your average Joe feels comfortable with contributing to the climate emergency and when things get really tough for him and his children he feels he can look back and say; ‘Well yes, I knowingly contributed to the climate emergency, I may be partly responsible for the death and destruction around me, but it was all worth it for those holidays in Spain.

The science in unequivocal. If we keep pumping carbon into the atmosphere the works will get hotter. The weather more dangerous. Food harder to grow. Droughts. Higher mortality and morbidity. Mass migration. It’s already happening across the globe. When resources are scarce we will fight each other over them. So yes, if that’s the further we want, let’s keep going as we are. Or, we can change and avoid the worst extremes of it.

I will probably be dead in about 5 years anyway so I shall take my chances

And this is why I predict that once enough of them are well enough informed, the younger generation will turn on us.

Where were you going OP?

Express0 · 18/07/2023 07:38

I’m in Turkey. It’s lovely and hot. I love the hot weather hence why I have come to Turkey in July.

By a bit hotter this year do you mean the highest temps ever recorded in some places?

Much of the world is seeing the same extreme heat waves, there aren't warnings for life because it's a little bit hotter

User1864876 · 18/07/2023 07:49

The weather warnings and warnings for life are a relatively new thing though, we get many more weather warnings now where we didn't for similar weather in the past

LunaLula83 · 18/07/2023 07:50

Sw france has been noticably cooler. Almost put my jeans on.

cakeorwine · 18/07/2023 07:51

We've altered our European plans this year. Going to mountain areas instead.
The idea of sweltering by a pool or a beach for a week is not my idea of fun.

But as people have said, Europe is a big place.

Willmafrockfit · 18/07/2023 07:53

dangerous for the elderly, so i heard

User1864876 · 18/07/2023 07:55

The news on the TV and the newspapers are loving it though, nothing like the weather to bring in a lot of clicks, MN as well doing well out of it

80sMum · 18/07/2023 07:57

It's only Southern Europa That is being affected by the heatwave. The UK remains unaffected, as does the rest of Northern and Eastern Europe and the ROI.

Some friends of ours are currently on holiday in Europe, in Norway - and it's 13° and pouring with rain there!

Poblano · 18/07/2023 07:58

I'll still be going to Europe for my summer holiday, but as my destination is the Netherlands the temperature will be fine.

I'm also travelling by train rather than flying.

Awesome. We want to do that! Hope you enjoy.

User1864876 · 18/07/2023 08:01

I'm sure you are doing your bit @LittleApartmentOnThePrairie ,

cheezncrackers · 18/07/2023 08:03

It's always hot in southern Europe in July and August. We don't like temps above 30 so we don't go there in the school summer holidays. This year it's hotter than normal for longer than normal, but it's not unusual to be 35-40 degrees in places like Sicily and Greece at this time of year. Climate change is making these hotter-than-normal summers more frequent, but that's not going to change in our lifetimes. Just choose somewhere cooler, if that's what you like.

Willmafrockfit · 18/07/2023 08:04

will you get your money back ? @Meadowland

cakeorwine · 18/07/2023 08:04

Sightseeing in hot weather is not fun.
We are seeing more and more days of extreme heat.
The idea of flying somewhere hot just to spend most of it in a hotel is not my idea of a holiday.
I suppose it's up to you what you want to do on holiday - but Europe is a massive place with a lot of variety.

When did we have similar weather to that being experienced in some parts of the world at the moment?

Maybe there are more warnings because there's more extreme weather

DinnaeFashYersel · 18/07/2023 08:04

My bit of Europe (Scotland) is 11C today. It's been raining for days and the forecast is more rain for days.

I like to go to the hot sunny bits of Europe for respite.

And I'm and in and out of the pool /sea person with a cold drink.

Although I will concede that 40C+ is probably too warm for even me.
