A friend is just back from Spain and spent the whole week indoors as it was "unbearably" hot.
We have just cancelled. Weather may be unpredictable here but at least we can go out !

You’ve cancelled your holiday as someone has come back from Spain saying it was hot? Seriously?

This. Bonkers! I can’t wait for our holiday end of august. Yes it might be hot but there’s a pool, the sea, no work, lovely food, cannot wait!

Oh well that's alright then. The fraction of the population who will be flying in private jets is miniscule compared to all the 2/3 hour flights your average 'Joe' will be taking, it all adds up massively. Personally I think we should all be given a quota, you get one short haul flight a year, one long haul flight every 5 years. Clearly will never happen as there's no global government and none of the so called leaders give a flying feck anyhow. Carry on just watching the burning, flooding and drought, it's awful 😞

Yep I agree, a quota sounds great. Like I say, a 2-hour flight to Spain once a year!

If it cuts down on the billionaires and, just as bad - unnecessary business travel - then brilliant.

LobsterCrab · 18/07/2023 08:40

YANBU at all OP. If you wouldn't enjoy it then it would be silly to go.

I'm sensing by all your posts that you think that climate change isn't really a thing 🙄

It's not something that is going to affect me so of course it is a thing but not something I need worry about

JMSA · 18/07/2023 06:26

I'm in Greece at the moment. Yes, it's hot, but what else would one expect?!
We've been sensible and had a great time.

Same here, we’re in Greece, it’s 1030am and already 38 degrees but we’re drinking loads of water, and dipping in and out of the pool.

BlackForestCake · 18/07/2023 08:49

What I don't get is if this is all due to global warming why is anyone still travelling by plane?

Jesus. Because we don't have enough annual leave to spend a week of it travelling back and forth to our holiday destination. That's fairly obvious isn't it?

IMustDoMoreExercise · 18/07/2023 08:57

If you do go make sure you have wild fire cover. Most policies don't.

jumpindestiny · 18/07/2023 09:06

Some of you need to watch old broadcasts, say 60 years ago. We have always referred to continental Europe as 'Europe'. Nothing was meant by it then and nothing is meant by it now, quit bullying people who continue to use this term. I hate how so many on here are trying to make it controversial and like to imply it reveals something about the speaker. It doesn't. And almost all Brits holiday in the Med, and she mentioned Spain in her OP, which is why she didn't elaborate. It's even more obvious she means the Med considering the heat is the topic, it's been in the news. I seriously hate Mumsnet sometimes, a bunch of sad bullies.

GodisaBC · 18/07/2023 09:07

Think you’re mad to cancel.
enjoy you’re wet week here.

I'm sorry @Meadowland I just don't believe you have cancelled your holiday and chucked away £££s and disappointed the family because it too hot. How does that honestly work?

Louloulouenna · 18/07/2023 09:10

Amazed that people could cancel a holiday like this - surely you lose all the money?

"Lots of cheap last minute deals available. Wish I could get the time off!"

I can't see any 🤔

I went on last minute.com and chose ‘anywhere’. Some good deals in Southern Europe- Greece was showing at £250 each for a week

I would take quotas on overall footprint.
Don't know why me with 1 car, low energy use house, no kids and wildlife garden should be punished as sheila with 5 kids, SUV, aircon, energy uselike 3 housea, massive people carrier and plastic lawn.

BillyNoM8s · 18/07/2023 09:12

I do think companies should be eliminating business travel. I live in the Middle East and there are endless international conferences etc taking place not only here, but globally. Given the advances in AI and tech, it really shouldn't be necessary for people to fly around the world to listen to some panel discussions and visit some stands.

It's absurd that COP 28 will be hosted in Dubai when it could be entirely virtual. I support numerous executives and we receive endless international requests, come to France for a dinner and speech, come to Lisbon for this frivolous event, come to the States to look at our office interior... that's on top of the large board meetings which are never in the same place twice.

We also ship people round the world for face to face recruitment, despite having global teams on the ground... you know why? Because there are hefty per diem allowances paid for it, so no one would end it voluntarily.

How else could I have reasonably got to Greece? Donkey?

HappyJunkie · 18/07/2023 09:18

Nah, I am booking to go to Cyprus in a week or so, love the heat, am sick of being cold, I live in the NorthWest and its rained for weeks, still having heating on and its kicking in at 16C its that cold, my arthritis is giving me terrible gyp, cannot wait to feel warm again and swim in that warm gorgeous sea😁

ssd · 18/07/2023 09:20

I find it really easy to avoid European holidays, i just look at my bank balance.

piedbeauty · 18/07/2023 09:21

There's plenty of Europe that's not hot!! Scandinavia, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium...

So YANBU for that.

ZannahStop · 18/07/2023 09:21

"Some of you need to watch old broadcasts, say 60 years ago. We have always referred to continental Europe as 'Europe'."

Yeah, you're right. Back to the early 60s we go. None of this new age nonsense. 🤪

SpinCycles · 18/07/2023 09:24

I agree, it shouldn't be the only change we make about our consumption, but it's a pretty big one we can make - most of us fairly easily

Owning a dog has around ten times the impact as return flights for summer hols to most European destinations.

All santimonious non-flyers I assume are also not pet owners or will be putting their animals to sleep immediately?

PeloMom · 18/07/2023 09:28

We came to ‘Europe’ for proper summer and it’s been high-teens low twenties 🥴. Europe is big…

Theraffarian · 18/07/2023 09:37

I’m not great in excessive heat , but I wouldn’t have cancelled, you just rethink your plan a little . For example get used to the siesta and then spend a later evening out , just take things slow . Where we are visiting next is quite quiet but the few clubs they have don’t even open until 11pm usually, I will be tucked up in bed by then , but will be having my evening meal 2 hours later than at home because it’s the norm there. From what I’ve seen the peak of the heatwave is today , so if you weren’t going til next week there’s time for it to ease a bit anyway.

ImSoShiney · 18/07/2023 09:43

I'd have had your holiday 🤣

poppym12 · 18/07/2023 09:46

Have you really cancelled your holiday?
