65k.

And if it’s not, what figure starts to be classed as a high earner?

Not in the slightest - at least 6 figures.

Qbish · 17/07/2023 22:35

No. That is not a high earner.

I would say - £300,000 plus? In the South.

🤣

vodkaredbullgirl · 17/07/2023 22:37

Well it's higher than mine, does that help.

blueshoes · 17/07/2023 22:37

It is a higher rate tax payer.

Not a high earner in London but I would say high earner everywhere else in the country.

Qbish · 17/07/2023 22:37

Notyourdime · 17/07/2023 22:36

🤣

Why the laugh face? £100,000 in London doesn't get you far, is certainly not a high earner. Same in the home counties.

yesigotyourletter · 17/07/2023 22:37

Christ people on here live in a different world. Yes it’s a high earner. Not the highest, but high.

wingingit1987 · 17/07/2023 22:37

I wouldn’t say so. To me, £100-150,000 would be a high earner but this will depend on location etc. those in London, for example, would probably consider triple that to be a high earner.

YukoandHiro · 17/07/2023 22:37

It's top 10 per cent of earners in the UK, so I would say "higher" . But when people say "high" I do think they mean six figs

Earnerlesr · 17/07/2023 22:38

I suppose I’m trying to work out what the phrase means as it’s used a lot on here, on the news, in conversation etc

OP posts:
catsandkid · 17/07/2023 22:38

I mean... it's higher than the average salary and in the higher rate tax band.

But I when people tend to refer to someone as a "high earner" in conversation they're usually earning at least £100k in my experience.

It's all subjective tbf. Depends on where you live, general wage expectations where you live etc.

NalafromtheLionKing · 17/07/2023 22:38

Not where I live. I would say £100k plus (perhaps £160k if a dual income household) is where you might start to be considered well off.

Hellocatshome · 17/07/2023 22:39

For tax paying reasons yes that it a high earner who is taxed at the higher rate. Mumsnet as a whole is very much not living in the real world when it comes to these things though so you will get some interesting answers.

Most people on here are full of shit 😂

30rockpage · 17/07/2023 22:40

Yes. But this is mn so await a thousand comments of I earn 500k and I don't feel a high earner at all type thing.

GodSaveTheClean · 17/07/2023 22:40

Average here. High is six figures minimum.
joint income of £120k here is pretty low end.

midgetastic · 17/07/2023 22:40

I think you are in the top 10%

So 9 in 10 people earn less than you

Which would be my definition of high earner

edenhills · 17/07/2023 22:41

I live in the south east and I would class that as a high earner.

Earnerlesr · 17/07/2023 22:41

I earn 42k! I used 65k as that’s what I begin to class as high earning

fuchiaknickers · 17/07/2023 22:42

Goodness me, yes I would say so!

How many jobs even pay £100,000+ outside of London?! I bet there are no more than about 50 people in my whole county earning that much.

Some people live in a bubble.

StopFeckingFaffing · 17/07/2023 22:42

It's a decent salary but when I hear someone described as a high earner I would tend to assume £100K+

It does depend on age too though so for someone quite early in their career (20s, early 30s) then I would consider £65K a high salary

Qbish · 17/07/2023 22:43

Yes, literally nobody in England earns more than £60,000 a year.

Loads of jobs do! I can't think there is a county that has fewer than 50 earning that ...

Mademetoxic · 17/07/2023 22:45

Mumsnet snobbery comes to mind with this thread...

oreo2020 · 17/07/2023 22:46

The government takes away child benefit once you start earning over 50k so for the government purposes, 50k is a high earner. You can tell I am unhappy - 50k is not that much especially in London and I have to repay my child benefit because this is what they define high earner. Not fair!!!
