65k.

And if it’s not, what figure starts to be classed as a high earner?

300 plus before you're considered a high earner 🤦‍♀️😂 How very Mumsnet.

OP, 65k would put you in the top 5% of earners in this country. Wealth is obviously a very different question to earnings.

It's top 10%. Generally, of course it's classed as being a high earner, by anyone with an ounce of common sense. By comparison with other adults in the UK you're doing very well indeed.

Parkandpicnic · 17/07/2023 22:48

Yes and no, a single person with no kids probably lives very comfortably on that, a household’s sole earner with 4 children might not be that much better off than a family of 4 on UC after tax, student loans, childcare, rent and mortgage costs

cocksstrideintheevening · 17/07/2023 22:48

No but it's all relative. I earn more but for some reason people here don't want to believe salaries are as they are. My EA is on 65.

Fiddlersgreen · 17/07/2023 22:49

300k?? Do people really earn that much??!!!

Scottishgirl85 · 17/07/2023 22:50

We're home counties and both me and my husband each earn over £100k. I'd consider us as high earners due to tax bracket.

RegainingTheWill2023 · 17/07/2023 22:50

Dear god people really live in their own bubbles don't they?
The national average salary is around £31k!
Lots of people earn 6 figure sums but shed loads more earn less than the national average!!

80sMum · 17/07/2023 22:51

I wouldn't say a £65k salary puts someone in the "high earner" category, no. But it's a very decent salary nonetheless (and, incidentally, 3 times the highest full-time salary that I ever earned).

I think of a "high earner" as being someone whose salary is above £150k.

BringOnSummerHolidays · 17/07/2023 22:52

When people say high earner, I think £100k or more. £65k is good but not high.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 17/07/2023 22:52

Objectively speaking, that salary does make you a high earner. It would put you securely in the top decile of earners in the UK, so anyone suggesting that it isn't a high income is talking nonsense.

Of course, MN has a wealthy demographic and lots of people claim to be "average" or even "struggling" on 6 figure salaries. I can only assume that some people move within very restricted circles and genuinely don't realise how others outside their bubble actually live.

Whether people will agree with you that £65k makes you a high earner will probably depend on their own situation. As you will see, some people are wildly out of touch with reality!

SophiaElise · 17/07/2023 22:52

It really is all relative.

A single person earning £150,000 with a small mortgage and no kids will have a lot more spare cash than a couple on a combined income of £300,000 with a large mortgage and 3 children in private school...

TedMullins · 17/07/2023 22:53

Classic mumsnet where the entirety of London earns at least 300k (I live there, own a flat, don’t know a single person earning above 60k). I would class it as a very good salary and 80k+ as high

Apprenticenomore · 17/07/2023 22:53

@Fiddlersgreen yes of course they do…the ceo of the company I work for earns nearly a million a month!! No joke! Our site head takes home 300-400k. My manager is on 80-90k.

FlutterShite · 17/07/2023 22:54

GodSaveTheClean · 17/07/2023 22:40

Average here. High is six figures minimum.
joint income of £120k here is pretty low end.

"Low end"! Fucking hell, educate yourself.

Littledogball · 17/07/2023 22:57

GodSaveTheClean · 17/07/2023 22:40

Don't be ridiculous. Most people earn between £25k and £30k. Open your eyes to the rest of the Uk not in your rich bubble.

JupiterFortified · 17/07/2023 22:57

Qbish · 17/07/2023 22:35

No. That is not a high earner.

I would say - £300,000 plus? In the South.

Only on mumsnet lol

shelbabab · 17/07/2023 22:58

Absolutely it is in my view.

I mean min wage is what about £18k full time.

JupiterFortified · 17/07/2023 22:58

Wildlyboring · 17/07/2023 22:39

Most people on here are full of shit 😂

100%, pure shit 🤣

CookieDoughKid · 17/07/2023 22:59

High tax payer but not high earner. I appreciate I am in a bubble where in my circle of friends and business acquaintances….the typical joint household income starts from £150 (at the low end)…..if single, starts from £120k and no none of us in London…

Libraryloiterer · 17/07/2023 22:59

Qbish · 17/07/2023 22:37

Why the laugh face? £100,000 in London doesn't get you far, is certainly not a high earner. Same in the home counties.

Yes it bloody does, I have a flat in one of the most desirable parts of North London, take multiple overseas holidays per year, never have to worry about bills and can buy what I want when I want.

But maybe my gratitude and sense of wealth is influenced by the fact I'm originally from one of the poorest parts of the country, and so I have a better grip of y'know.. reality.

Exchange230316 · 17/07/2023 22:59

Loads if time to post on MN at 22:59 earning 1000000000000000 a month

Guessthevoice · 17/07/2023 23:00

Of course £65k is a high earner.

Exchange230316 · 17/07/2023 23:00

I have loads of time and I still don't think I am high earner.

fuchiaknickers · 17/07/2023 23:00

SweetSakura · 17/07/2023 22:44

Loads of jobs do! I can't think there is a county that has fewer than 50 earning that ...

Well, I live in a rural county, and I’m thinking:

Council chief exec (on about £110k I believe)

We have a small general hospital - maybe 10 - 20 senior people there on that wage?

Head of the college and the largest secondary school could be on that much.

Probably a couple of judges.

I daresay there are business owners and landowners who are very wealthy, but I have no idea how many people like that there would be, and how much would just be ‘wealth’ rather than salary.

ohfook · 17/07/2023 23:00

Its much higher than I earn. But when someone says high earner, I generally think of £109k plus.
