To think this problem is too common with hairdressers?!

I'm angry at hairdressers today (sorry to group you all together, lighthearted! Grin)

But honestly, I went to the hairdresser yesterday and asked for about 4 inches off and they've took about 8. I'd make clear that I didn't want it too short either (as it was waist length) and it's at my collarbone.

It just frustrates me that it's not the first time it's happened to me and I bet a lot of others have a similar story. I feel like some hairdressers just don't listen at all when it comes to length.

  1. AIBU to be angry about this and be close to swearing off hairdressers? (Lighthearted - ish)
  2. AIBU to be as upset as I am about this? (This isn't lighthearted, I'm genuinely upset at how much has been taken off and can't even look in the mirror and it's just making me feel so down knowing there's nothing to be able to fix it other than wait years for it to grow back)

and
3) anyone else got a bad haircut story to share to lighten my mood today? Blush

Never, but my hairdresser is my mother 😂.

Are you sure they didn’t do this because of the ends? My mum, if I leave it too long before I see her for a haircut, will tell me it looks ‘endy’ meaning it’s broken off and in poor condition on the ends. I can usually feel this when brushing or combing myself anyway…. I always tell her to just take it up to where she needs to unless I am asking for a specific style as I know it will look so much better for it.

My issue is all they can seem to do where ever I go is talk me a decent story and then cut a bob. It seems to be all about colour and either extensions or a bob, aren’t they taught how to cut anything else anymore

MucozadeOnLucozade · 17/07/2023 19:40

We've had so many bad experiences. My child wants his fringe to be cut so it covers his whole forehead. No matter how much I be emphasised this, he always got a fringe half way up his forehead and was the right length when we returned for next cut and whoosh off it went again!

Ha ha a hairdresser I had years just always recommend a bob... Then I realised every single one of her customers walked out with a bob... I was like omg!

The only saving grace OP is hair grows. I have many instances of scissor happiness, to the extent of a unasked for pixie cut. I always found it often happened when I chatted away to much maybe breaking the concentration ☺️

Screamingabdabz · 17/07/2023 21:10

Unless you’re a Disney Princess, I’ve yet to see waist length hair that actually looks any good. Collarbone length is probably far more flattering. They’ve done you a favour, let’s face it!

Smartstuffed · 17/07/2023 21:23

A pp mentioned telling the hairdresser that you won't pay if they don't listen to what you want done. I think that has some merit. It might actually focus their brain on the fact that your head of hair is yours and not there for them to do what they like with. It's your property not their plaything or experimental testing ground.

Any deviation from your request, any ideas or suggestions, and any issues or potential issues they've spotted should be discussed with you before they do anything.

MrsMomoa2 · 17/07/2023 21:24

100% with you! Happened to me recently! Asked for a trim and I could not see until too late but had cut off 4 inches. My hair takes forever to grow so at least 2 years of growth and am gutted!! Could barely talk when I realised…
Came a year after a fringe ‘trim’ (different hair dresser) on my long fringe … saw it cut above my eyebrow .. was hideous had to wear it in a side plait for months…
so yes I seem to find hair dressers who don’t listen!!

purpletrees16 · 17/07/2023 21:45

Time for a new hairdresser. Find one who will do exactly what you want and then patron them for years and years, even if it involves an awkward commute if they move salon!

for me it’s thinning my hair. I have thick hair & a double crown and thinning it means the top crown curls up unless I straighten it. Instantly solved with no thinning.

Missingpop · 17/07/2023 23:41

I truly believe most hairdressers speak their own language.
I’d moved & went to a new salon I insisted no more than an inch off but was ignored & 2inches was cut off; I refused to pay the bill; stating I didn’t get what I’d asked for, turned out it was the salon owner who’d cut my hair she got really nasty but in the end accepted she didn’t deliver what I’d asked for but was bad mouthing me as I left; so I called back to her to get herself to the opticians; cause her poor old man was walking around believing his cock was double its real size & wiggled my little finger at her 😂 her face was a picture & so red, the salon was busy & everyone heard they all laughed hopefully she learnt to listen to her customers 😂

Mumof2teens79 · 17/07/2023 23:43

Never had this problem. They usually don't cut enough off.
May depend if they have a good idea of what an inch is

felixthemoggy · 18/07/2023 05:10

Slightly putting me off going for a trim today, it's been 12 months since I had my hair done, and I'm dreading them taking too much off.
Must remember to be firm and show them how much they are allowed to cut ✂️

I think you were very rude. I wouldn’t have refused to pay over an inch, let alone make lewd comments to her about her man’s cock.

Aprilx · 18/07/2023 05:32

No never had that happen. I think maybe you didn’t communicate very well though.

Absolutely disgraceful behaviour on your part. And honestly, nobody watching that would have been on your side.

Thepossibility · 18/07/2023 05:42

I've rarely had a cut that I've been happy with. I got some haircutting scissors online. Now I cut my fringe and DH does the back. Much better.

Try metric system next time Grin

Had this happen so many times to me. I like my hair when it’s a just passed shoulder length bob and spend every year growing it because I haven’t found a hairdresser yet that doesn’t take it right up to my jawline when I say a maximum of 1 inch off.
I even explain to them how I hate it sitting at my jawline and how I keep ending up with it that length then have to grow it out and I get all the sympathetic noises and claims that they won’t do it.
Hate getting my hair cut for that reason.

Below your shoulder isn't a Bob, that may be where you are going wrong.
I would have said a Bob has to have a gap between shoulder and hair, should be short, blunt cut at jawline roughly.
a lob can skim shoulder.

Manxgal · 18/07/2023 10:16

I have a photo taken when my hair was just right which I show to the hairdresser, she knows exactly what I want.

Troymaiden · 18/07/2023 11:00

Had this problem for years with various “scissor happy” hairdressers - however my current hairdresser & I now have a joke about wether I want a “sewing inch or hairdresser inch” cut ( I’m a tailoress) and I get what I’ve asked for 😃

ifIwerenotanandroid · 18/07/2023 12:47

In case there are any hairdressers on here, what are you supposed to do if (like a PP) a customer/client comes in & asks for a style you can't do? What's the protocol?

RyvitaVonCheese · 18/07/2023 13:18

I usually have the opposite problem. I have a short pixie cut and the first question I’m asked is whether I’m going to grow my hair and, when I say no, obvious disappointment from the stylist. I usually have to insist they cut it shorter, sometimes repeatedly, regardless of what I ask for and the images I show them.

I did have a bit of a hair disaster a few years ago when the stylist clearly couldn’t get my hair even and had to keep cutting it shorter and shorter until I had almost nothing left and it was nothing like I’d asked for. She was amazing with colour but I couldn’t risk another cut like that again.

Weedoormatnomore · 18/07/2023 13:40

When I want a lot cut off hair dressers always triple check with me I could sit on my hair now boob length but I showed her using my hair how much I wanted off.

CrazyLadie · 18/07/2023 16:54

treeru · 16/07/2023 15:05

It's just got me very upset and very dramatic Grin DP thinks I'm being ridiculous. The length just doesn't suit me at all though. I felt I was already being brave bringing it from my waist to just under my boob line!!! So to take several more inches after that has just made me distraught. Maybe I'll get used to it and get over it

I have a friend who also doesn't like getting to much off, the one day so had no option and wow did she look like a billion times better, give it a chance

nofluffsgiven · 18/07/2023 17:48

Only ever had one hair cut that I hated and it was a man that did it. I told him what I wanted and he just did what he wanted and it looked awful. He styled it into a weird flick at the bottom and It looked ridiculous. I didn’t have the confidence to tell him I didn’t like it, so I just paid and never went back 🤣🫣
