To think this problem is too common with hairdressers?!

I'm angry at hairdressers today (sorry to group you all together, lighthearted! Grin)

But honestly, I went to the hairdresser yesterday and asked for about 4 inches off and they've took about 8. I'd make clear that I didn't want it too short either (as it was waist length) and it's at my collarbone.

It just frustrates me that it's not the first time it's happened to me and I bet a lot of others have a similar story. I feel like some hairdressers just don't listen at all when it comes to length.

  1. AIBU to be angry about this and be close to swearing off hairdressers? (Lighthearted - ish)
  2. AIBU to be as upset as I am about this? (This isn't lighthearted, I'm genuinely upset at how much has been taken off and can't even look in the mirror and it's just making me feel so down knowing there's nothing to be able to fix it other than wait years for it to grow back)

and
3) anyone else got a bad haircut story to share to lighten my mood today? Blush

I've been going to the same hairdresser for years and have never been given a cut I didn't want.

Same here. I've told my hairdresser that if she ever moves away, I will have to follow her so that she can still do my hair.

I've only ever had 3 hairdressers that I'm really happy with in all my 67 years though, but I think that's more to do with my weird hair than incompetent hairdressers.

Orangebadger · 16/07/2023 20:56

My hairdresser is fab and avoids the common misinterpretation of inches but saying right this is what 1 inch is to me?

But I have been to others where they chop way more than I have asked for off!

ThinWomansBrain · 16/07/2023 21:34

My hairdresser cuts my hair dry, which I think is a vast improvement. My hair is curly, so if it's wet, whatever it looks like is not much indication of the finished length when dry.
This morning they cut it, then went over it a second time - the appointment was only 45 minutes & I'm pretty certain it didn't even take that.

I do miss the head massage you get when your hair is washed though.

Are layers out of fashion now, seems a lot of dislike for them on this thread....
I have long layers put in as have very thin and lifeless hair. It gives it some volume and shape.

Layla30 · 16/07/2023 22:16

Had this happen so many times to me. I like my hair when it’s a just passed shoulder length bob and spend every year growing it because I haven’t found a hairdresser yet that doesn’t take it right up to my jawline when I say a maximum of 1 inch off.
I even explain to them how I hate it sitting at my jawline and how I keep ending up with it that length then have to grow it out and I get all the sympathetic noises and claims that they won’t do it.
Hate getting my hair cut for that reason.

TRexTara · 16/07/2023 23:39

Sorry but once they have taken a good chunk off, you are held hostage until they finish and can merely hope for the best.

FussyPud · 17/07/2023 00:50

My hairdresser used to hate me. I have a blunt bob with a blunt fringe. No shape, no layers, no little bit of rounding on the fringe to frame the face. She would practically plead with me, and I would refuse. I get that they like to piss about and try shit they think would look nice, but they have their own hair for that. I gave her almost free rein with colour though (no blonde, ever), so she usually forgave me.

After lockdown she didn’t return to hairdressing, so now I colour my own and hope for the best with whatever appointment city centre salons have. They’re told in no uncertain terms that they’re not to deviate from my instructions, regardless of their thoughts on the matter. So far, so good.

treeru · 17/07/2023 06:12

@Ridemeginger the post of this was much appreciated. One of my favourite shows!

If you wear glasses , you are expected to take them off for a cut , I'm practically blind without mine and eyesight is certainly not good enough to see myself in the mirror whilst it's being done.

See, I wouldnt go back to someone who didnt listen to me the first time, I dont give a crap if they work at Trevor Sorbie or not, if they dont listen to what you actually want then they arent a good stylist, regardless of where they work. Plus, there are so many fancy salons around now you arent limited to just one brand, there are loads to choose from

This was back in the olden days where it was considered aspirational to go to a nice salon in London no less for a cut. The cut was always good but I just didn’t understand why he cut so much off.

A few years earlier a new salon with a well known name appeared near my work. I went in and was given a Rachel, didn’t suit me and he didn’t really ask if I wanted that but think he thought because it was the in hairstyle then, that’s what I wanted!

Second time in same salon above he roughly dried my hair but wasn’t finished drying it properly. Even when I got back to the office someone asked why it was damp? Think it was a growing out perm but still he could’ve dried it properly! After that I didn’t return.

HRTQueen · 17/07/2023 10:41

Yes many hairdressers know my hair better than I do

I know layers just at the end do nothing but many just won’t listen

I cut my own hair now (it’s thick and wavy so mistakes are easily hidden) and get length trimmed once or twice a year

Carebearflair · 17/07/2023 10:45

I go to the hairdressers very rarely but everytime I have, they've made sure to check what my version of "2/4 inches" is by spreading out their fingers to demonstrate what they think is that length before cutting 😊

whenindoubtgotothelibrary · 17/07/2023 10:49

This happened to me when I was 19. Nearly waist length hair chopped off to just below shoulder length when I'd asked for a trim. Took years to recover, and I still struggle to trust hairdressers more than 3 decades later.

thecatsthecats · 17/07/2023 10:56

I always take photos of good haircuts I get from all angles so that I can show the hairdresser, and half of them still argue.

I look awful with hair at shoulder length - an inch or two in either direction looks fine, but at the shoulder looks crap.

I showed this woman a pic of me with a graded jaw length bob that was honestly the best haircut I'd ever had.

She cut it to shoulder length, I said that it needed to be shorter. She said "she'd just put the layers in and see how I felt" - err, no, I can already see that it's a good few inches too long. I had to cut it myself a few days later because she did a fucking awful job. To top it off, she called my scalp ezcema "conditioner build up".

I prefer going to BAME hairdressers, because they're the only ones who consistently know how to deal with my thick and curly hair.

To the PP that asked what I said when she was done which I read further down, I said 'thanks!' and went to pay. I knew it was far too short at this point but I am faaar too awkward to actually say anything and it definitely looks worse since being home and washed. The awkwardness is another reason why I hate going to the hairdresser really - I'm too awkward to say when it's too short (not that there'd be much point!) and I feel kind of awkward the entire time anyway.

Anyway, update, I've curled it a bit now and it looks better (in terms of the layers that don't suit me). The length still has me grieving but it definitely looks a bit better with curls in. HOWEVER, I'm wanting it to grow as fast as possible and now worried that if I do regularly curl it that the regular heat use will stop it growing as quick? (Is this a myth?!?!? Confused)

Is it long enough for one of the heatless hair curling bands? Mine is just past my shoulders and I use one its great.

That's a myth,

But you need to learn to speak up

QuestionableMouse · 17/07/2023 11:39

Nothing you do you your hair once it's out of your head can affect the growth. A good varied diet with enough protein may make it grow better though!

treeru · 16/07/2023 19:38

@Thatbloodyhedge @Prettypaisleyslippers for the third time, I faced the mirror and they cut it with my hair BEHIND me. Unless I had eyes in the back of my head, I could not see until they were cutting the last of it! (At which point I was far too uncomfortable to say anything as there'd be no point!)

Yes, I often find they hold it up and show me 2 inches I agree and they start cutting majoritively BEHIND my head. Then when they pull it forward to even it up its out somehow 6-8 inches and not remotely what I asked for shorter and then they just keep trimming to finish it.

I once went in took looks of pictures of what I wanted (like Elliott from scrubs when she had it choppy) the guy was like 'no problem, I can do it now just get in the chair' and he cut my hair. I left with a sort of cross between a pixie cut and a 'karen' cut... it was so short on the back you couldn't even tie it.

I expected it to be shorter that time as it is a shoulder length style and I was having a bit of a personal break down so decided to go shorter but it was NOT the style in the picture. I even straight up said 'this is NOTHING like the picture' and he just looked at me with zero fucks given and said 'Yeah, I don't know how to do that'... so why did he even touch my hair then.

We had a bit of back and forth and he said I should have done it myself if I was going to insist on a style... just batshit.

I cut my own hair now, at least if I fuck it up I only have myself to blame (and its not a blunt bob).

No the shag, wolfe cut, mullet, unicorn etc... are massively popular with young people at the moment if youtube, tiktok, instagram etc... is anything to go off.

Im quite glad because if this becomes the 'style' then maybe hairdressers will bloody learn it lol.

JenniferBooth · 17/07/2023 17:32

Got hair appointment tomorrow Dreading sitting in a hot salon if shes running behind.

joycies · 17/07/2023 18:12

Happened to me too. From waist length to bob even though I have 8 cowlicks. I looked like the dark dolly who can't be mentioned ! I wouldn't be re-living it reading these comments. Seems better to delve into what you can to to make it suit better, BabyLiss maybe?

Badhairdayagain · 17/07/2023 18:53

I have curly hair. It was just under my shoulders and I asked for it to be cut so that it would sit at my collar bone. Hairdresser cut my hair to collar length. When it was dry it was halfway up my ear. I looked like a mushroom for 6 months 😂

moortownplumber · 17/07/2023 19:00

Ask for two inches off next time

ReformedWaywardTeen · 17/07/2023 19:02

I get DH to trim mine now exactly because I got sick of paying over £100 to someone who entirely ignored my wishes.
I would have to say repeatedly that no, I don't want choppy layers, no I don't want a side parting or a fringe or anything, just a bloody trim. They wild take far more off than I'd ask too

So DH has trimmed it since lockdown, and I i dye it at home.
