To think this problem is too common with hairdressers?!

I'm angry at hairdressers today (sorry to group you all together, lighthearted! Grin)

But honestly, I went to the hairdresser yesterday and asked for about 4 inches off and they've took about 8. I'd make clear that I didn't want it too short either (as it was waist length) and it's at my collarbone.

It just frustrates me that it's not the first time it's happened to me and I bet a lot of others have a similar story. I feel like some hairdressers just don't listen at all when it comes to length.

  1. AIBU to be angry about this and be close to swearing off hairdressers? (Lighthearted - ish)
  2. AIBU to be as upset as I am about this? (This isn't lighthearted, I'm genuinely upset at how much has been taken off and can't even look in the mirror and it's just making me feel so down knowing there's nothing to be able to fix it other than wait years for it to grow back)

and
3) anyone else got a bad haircut story to share to lighten my mood today? Blush

I last went to a hairdresser in 2002. I had just had my first baby and wanted my hair in a shorter, more practical style. I explained this and she seemed to understand what I wanted . I was distracted by the endless chatter, and couldn't see too well since the hairdresser asked me to remove my glasses anyway.

I did think it was odd when the hairdresser suddenly told me that she wouldn't have time to dry my hair, but it was only when I put my glasses on afterwards that I saw what she had done. I went from having a shoulder-length bob, to exactly the same cut but medieval-peasant length. My fringe was approximately an inch and a half long. This was the day before my baby's baptism. So there is a permanent record of me looking like that, which is nice.

These days my husband cuts my hair. My requirements are simple ("Just make it shorter") and he never cuts it too short.

Blossomandbee · 16/07/2023 16:34

I've had this numerous times with many different hairdressers. So many times I've wanted a long shoulder length bob and ended up with it up above my jawline. I've never actually found anyone able to do what I want. I always take pictures to show them what I want too. It puts you off going.

johnnydeppsslipper · 16/07/2023 16:35

Can I ask is it a hairdresser you've used before?

How often do you get it cut?

And how much did you pay?

treeru · 16/07/2023 16:36

@Blossomandbee it has well and truly put me off going to anyone again this time Blush honestly think I'd rather cut it myself. It's going to take about a year to get it to grow to where I asked for! I just keep feeling worse and worse about it the more I look at it

I know what you mean but I'm actually wishing the lady I've seen for three, ( yes three) consultations was actually a bit more proactive. I went in to discuss highlights and still can't decide. I just want her to say " Look Liz, do this. It'll be fine". But she's so cautious I'm going to go and book with a different one. But yes, I agree this complaint is a common one and I'm sure there's no smoke without fire.

treeru · 16/07/2023 16:38

@johnnydeppsslipper not a person I've used before, tend to get it cut once a year and £50!

Show us pix OP.

ikno · 16/07/2023 16:41

Have you got photos?

what I’m thinking happened is that your waist length hair might have been thin/damaged/ratty at the ends, so she took it up higher than anticipated to be able to even your cut out and make it look thick and healthy. But waist length to your collarbone is a massive difference. To me collarbone length hair is a bob?

Booksandwine80 · 16/07/2023 16:42

Didn’t happen

FancyFanny · 16/07/2023 16:42

I can't see how you look great with hair to your waist but awful with it at your collar bone! Once hair gets past the shoulder it just becomes a long hair style and a few inches on doesn't make any difference to your face.

pornyshroudofturin · 16/07/2023 16:44

Although it might feel a lot different to you OP, I promise that others will not notice in the same way. Once hair is past the collar bone it's just "long hair" to other people. Whether it's just past collar bone, bra strap or waist length doesn't really change how it looks or the shape around your face.

luckylavender · 16/07/2023 16:44

I don't think saying you don't want it too short is enough detail really. To me what you got isn't too short. But couldn't you see as they were about to cut?

pornyshroudofturin · 16/07/2023 16:44

Which is, I see, exactly what poster above me said, she just said it better!!!

treeru · 16/07/2023 16:48

I'm not posting photos as I don't want to out myself - I wouldn't post photos on here at all with anything identifiable and hair definitely is

@luckylavender no, I've already had people saying it's 'still long' being an inch or two under collarbone so I absolutely get your point. They cut it with my hair behind me so I couldn't see at all until they cut the sides last.

mangochops · 16/07/2023 16:49

I understand. Ive been through several hairdressers that did this and it pissed me off as thats NOT what I asked for. I have now found a hairstylist that does exactly what I ask for and he's amazing, I'm never letting him go.

QuestionableMouse · 16/07/2023 16:50

TheWayoftheLeaf · 16/07/2023 15:55

I've never had that tbh. I either say 'take whatever's dead off' and they usually do a lot or I say a specific amount and they always check with me just before the snip!

It's lucky you haven't ended up with a skinhead. It's all dead once it's out of your scalp!

TeddySunflowers · 16/07/2023 16:54

I stopped going to hair dressers for this exact reason. My hair grows so slowly so it takes years to grow back. Every hair dresser I've been to think they know better than me what will make me happy. I was young and nervous last time I went so just went home in tears but if I went now and they still did it I'd be kicking up a huge fuss but it's not worth the hassle I just cut my hair myself.

Akiddleetivy2woodenchu · 16/07/2023 16:55

I had waist length hair cut to a jaw length bob. Told me sulkily that she hadn’t been able to get it straight because it was curly.

Also, why is no-one able to style curly hair? I always end up with it being straightened, or worse, straightened and then some random waves put in with curling tongs. Just rough dry it with some curl cream and it will look fine!

OhmygodDont · 16/07/2023 16:55

This is why I rarely go and don’t even get me started on colouring. I was fire engine red can you do that? Yes yes £150. Ok. Leaves. Brown with a tinge of red.

Goes online. Spends £15. Gets fire engine red 😂🤦🏻‍♀️

I go once a year for a good ole thinning out and take the split ends off my self the rest of the year.

KajsaKavat · 16/07/2023 16:56

Hairdressers are an absolute pain. I don’t use them anymore and just cut my own hair. I’ve had a million bad experiences m, they are not worth my time money or peace of mind.

GladAllOver · 16/07/2023 16:59

I have very long hair. When I need a couple of inches off due to split ends, DH trims it across my back. Takes him a couple of minutes and he seems to like doing it. I wouldn't dream of paying a hairdresser to do such a simple job.

Laiste · 16/07/2023 17:00

I'm with you OP.

I've been to the hairdressers exactly 3 times in the last 30 years. Different salon each time. Each time there was me thinking i can't be that unlucky again - and each time they didn't do what i asked and it put me off for another 10 years!

The last time i went i played it safe. I didn't want scissors any where near me - just asked for colour. A very specific high light job. She sat for ages asking me what i wanted, looking at pics ect. describing back to me what i wanted ... i wanted a few chunky very light high lights on top, and framing my face, but leaving my darker mid and under layer mostly alone. Guess what? She did a basic bloody 'loads of teeny fine same size highlights all over' job which i guess she does whenever she's asked for highlights.

I couldn't understand how she'd sat and listened and spoken about what i wanted and then given me that! Instead of chunky highlights i just ended up with sand coloured hair because all the tiny hightlights all swirled together as one.

🙄

Cornchip · 16/07/2023 17:01

I had so many awful haircuts over the years.

As a child having a wonky fringe which was 2m shorter at one side than the other (mum had to even that one out which essentially left me with a micro fringe).
That time I went for a balayage on virgin hair and left with 2 single strands of a lighter brown.

I ended up going to a top salon and paying £££ for my haircuts and dyes. Was expensive but they never ruined my hair.

Anyway, there was a happy ending. A really talented (award winning) hairdresser actually opened his own salon in my hometown. Similar prices to the other salon but the same quality and it’s now a 5 minute walk away as opposed to a 40 minute drive with fuck all parking nearby.

Hasn’t ruined my hair once and it’s a dream going to him.

OP I’d just keep looking. Read reviews, look at pics of their work on their social media accounts etc. Look for salons where they compete regularly (L’Oréal Colour Trophy etc). They won’t ruin your hair.

Cornchip · 16/07/2023 17:01

*2cm not 2m

WeetabixTowels · 16/07/2023 17:02

Yes I once went for a long Bob, so shoulder length at the front with it slightly higher up at the back.

I ended up with a choir boy hair cut that was at my jaw the whole way round.

I mean are they not listening or something?! I’m still upset about it it did nothing for me
