Would you park like this?

Second time I’ve had a disagreement at my local station. The spaces are narrow and the carpark is very very popular. Gold dust spaces, but Tbf there is a carpark 4 min walk away that’s bigger. The station one is pokey car park not really suitable for many modern cars.

On a number of occasions I’ve found very large 4x4 cars right up to the white lines. I have an old low car, thin doors. I’m slim. I can park between two of them and get out without touching their car with my doors. It’s a squeeze, but no contact at all.

Im guessing their thick doors and higher doors make this difficult, particularly if they aren’t petite. As it’s not a disabled space I’m restricting (there are wide separate spaces the other side for disabled drivers) I just park if I can park, and don’t concern myself with other cars. If I can fit, I’m in my own space I see it as fair play.

Twice I’ve come back to moody car owners of the huge cars.

My view is if their car is huge/ they struggle to get in then they should use the half empty nearby car park as it has wider spaces and you can park at the back without neighbours. I don’t see why I should walk it, if I have no needs for extra space.

Ive just had a really screamy outraged woman shouting I should consider the space taken if I’m blocking access.

I’m maybe an arsehole, as I laughed it off. But do others agree? Do this?

Todays woman btw was a similar build, it was just because the size of her doors she couldn’t access btw. A car issue, not a person issue. Was young and clearly mobile

YANBU!

PinkSkiesAtNight · 15/07/2023 18:49

Totally fine in my book! I have sliding doors at the back, so I'm used to smaller spaces. As you say, if you're inside your lines, all good!

Juanmartinez · 15/07/2023 18:51

If you've parked between the lines , then you're fine, I don't see how anyone can moan at you.

Saschka · 15/07/2023 18:54

Whenever I have been blocked in, I get in through the passenger side door (or back door, or boot) and climb over. Why couldn’t she do that, were both sides blocked in?

DiscoDeborah · 15/07/2023 18:58

I try not to block other people's access. Partly because I'm not selfish but also because I don't want to risk anyone potentially damaging my car trying to get in theirs.

I'd go to the car park down the road.

My car is over 20, not fussed about damage. Marks are plenty

Tbh I didn’t look

I agree. If people want to drive these huge cars on our small roads they're going to have to accept that this is going to happen to them. No one's forcing them to buy a huge beast of a machine.

It was a tight reverse, within the white lines. Both large cars had wheels on the white line. Possibly on both sides I’d guess, but I didn’t look- just did my own thing

YANBU…but I would park down the road because I wouldn’t want to risk someone bashing my car with their door.

Hoppinggreen · 15/07/2023 19:03

If you are within the lines it’s fine

Yes, surely a choice. Drive a tank, accept you need tank appropriate parking. I’m not going to seek out large cars, but equally I’m not going to park elsewhere for their benefit as I didn’t buy a large car

Crack on as you are then. If they park so that their wheels are on the white lines they have to consider that someone else will park within the adjacent space and block their access.

Doggydarling · 15/07/2023 19:09

Depending on what I'm driving, if it's my car I won't take the chance, I drive an estate so it's long but not extra wide but it's pretty new and I've already had to pay for bodywork because despite it having more alarms and cameras than the pentagon dh still managed to reverse it into a window sill!! If I'm driving our ancient battered beat up old van that I use for going hiking and camping I park it in whatever space is available, any marks could only enhance it at this stage. TBH carpark spaces haven't gotten bigger in decades but even small cars are a lot bigger than they were when measurements were decided on for carparks. Keep parking and keep laughing, the other driver was an idiot.

TulipCat · 15/07/2023 19:09

My not-large but new car has auto reverse for this very scenario. It backs out without you needing to be in the car. Maybe they should change cars if they are going to get annoyed at people parking legitimately next to them.

Catusrusty · 15/07/2023 19:18

You're within the lines, so you're fine.

I do think the size of some of the cars on the road are ridiculous though, they don't fit within their environment at all.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 15/07/2023 19:18

@TulipCat

What trickery is this?

eldorado02 · 15/07/2023 19:19

In the US, some car parks have spaces that are labelled for “compact” cars only, i.e. not for giant SUVs or minivans. With the ubiquity of massive cars becoming ever greater here, perhaps we should do the same, or (given how little land we have) put signs up warning tank drivers that they won’t easily fit in the lines.

toochesterdraws · 15/07/2023 19:21

This thread has made my day @Wertie and I would absolutely love to have seen their reaction to your perfect parking. Good for you and bloody well done.

watermeloncougar · 15/07/2023 19:23

Yanbu. You're parked in a space, between ( not on) the lines. Too many people drive effing great Range Rovers or similar around (and ime it's usually the poor drivers who own them; maybe they feel safer driving through the city in a ridiculous size tank!) Tough shit if they can't park within the spaces in a car park

Jifmicroliquid · 15/07/2023 19:24

I read somewhere that if everyone actually parked with their tyres on the left line, everyone would have the same amount of space. Wonder if we should adopt this.

It's called remote smart parking assist, or some such thing. It's an electric car, and is pretty clever, but also rather bossy and judgemental 😂

Muhwanda · 15/07/2023 19:26

I have a similar car to you op, and generally think if I can get in the lines and exit car without touching the other car then all is fine.

Usplusone · 15/07/2023 19:27

YANBU I do this too, though I do sometimes worry I'll come back to an angry car owner
