Would you park like this?

Second time I’ve had a disagreement at my local station. The spaces are narrow and the carpark is very very popular. Gold dust spaces, but Tbf there is a carpark 4 min walk away that’s bigger. The station one is pokey car park not really suitable for many modern cars.

On a number of occasions I’ve found very large 4x4 cars right up to the white lines. I have an old low car, thin doors. I’m slim. I can park between two of them and get out without touching their car with my doors. It’s a squeeze, but no contact at all.

Im guessing their thick doors and higher doors make this difficult, particularly if they aren’t petite. As it’s not a disabled space I’m restricting (there are wide separate spaces the other side for disabled drivers) I just park if I can park, and don’t concern myself with other cars. If I can fit, I’m in my own space I see it as fair play.

Twice I’ve come back to moody car owners of the huge cars.

My view is if their car is huge/ they struggle to get in then they should use the half empty nearby car park as it has wider spaces and you can park at the back without neighbours. I don’t see why I should walk it, if I have no needs for extra space.

Ive just had a really screamy outraged woman shouting I should consider the space taken if I’m blocking access.

I’m maybe an arsehole, as I laughed it off. But do others agree? Do this?

So she was expecting the space next to her to be left empty in a busy car park? She's the unreasonable one.

Snailsaresweet · 15/07/2023 19:32

You are clearly NBU! If you're on twitter, I suggest you follow Wankpanzer Watch - which is all about the ridiculous (and frequently illegal) places where large SUVs park.

WeeOrcadian · 15/07/2023 19:32

I'm on the other side - my car is the bigger one with a stupidly wide footprint - I'm jealous of smaller cars when u see them sliding into a space and I'm squeezing mine in

YADNBU - I suck it up, I get that my car is big, I don't hate on drivers of smaller cars because of this, that's ridiculous

AllotmentTime · 15/07/2023 19:33

Call me petty but I'd be seeking them out after that. Idiots, of course if you're within the lines it's fine. If they're struggling they should use smaller cars.

DinnaeFashYersel · 15/07/2023 19:35

As long as you are parked between the white lines YANBU

Badbudgeter · 15/07/2023 19:36

I think if you’re between the lines it’s not your problem tbh. I have a big vehicle but it has sliding doors in the back so I’m happy to shimmy across to the front seats. I always think you can get in with just opening the door a little for a tall vehicle.

Caroparo52 · 15/07/2023 19:37

Well done op. Feel you are totally in the right. Tough shit if tank driver can't get. They should have thought of that

SarahAndQuack · 15/07/2023 19:41

If you're inside the lines, you're fine. It might be courteous to try to leave room if you can, but realistically, if someone else has parked a huge car right up against the white line, they have to expect that they may have a squeeze to get back in! Otherwise, where does it end? I had someone the other day who gave me a lecture for parking 'unevenly' in my space because he couldn't open his door to the full extent. I pointed out I was in the lines (and so was he), but he still clearly believed parking on an angle was Deviant Behaviour.

Nanna50 · 15/07/2023 19:43

@TulipCat
Does your key fob start and reverse the car when you’re standing outside and then stop to let you in. Like a remote control?

Clymene · 15/07/2023 19:43

Carry on with your perfect parking! I think some people park in such a way as to no actually take up two spaces but to make it very difficult for anyone to park between them.

Some car parks are very narrow though. I had to pull out the other day to allow the elderly couple I parked next to get into their cad. I was parked in the centre of the space but she literally couldn't get back into the car with another vehicle parked next to her as she needed the door open wide to get in.

Emeraldrings · 15/07/2023 19:44

Even with larger cars they should be within, not on the lines. My dad has a Land Cruiser and has always had large cars due to his height but has never parked on or over white lines in a car park.
He actually recently had a run in with a younger male because he felt my dad was parked too close (but still in his own bay)and he said he'd just smash his door in to my dad's car. My dad said go ahead it'll damage your car more than mine.
Also my dad's car is 20 years old so it's not in mint condition. Other blokes car was much newer. He managed to get in without damaging either car.
Thing is if you have a big car it's a risk you take. I do try to be considerate of others when I park but sometimes you don't get a lot of choice about where you park.

Yes, exactly that. You have to be standing pretty close. I have only used it once I have to say, as I found it all a bit freaky!

wholivesondrurylane · 15/07/2023 19:48

If people park on spaces too narrow for their car, it's their problem.

Would you squeeze against one wall, risking to be blocked on your only accessible side by a bigger car? Of course not. People are idiots. What do they expect? No one to park on either side? They will probably use the parent and child spaces whenever they can.

Amazing I would have to practice it in an empty car park first 🫣

Parking wonky IS deviant behaviour Wink

supersonicginandtonic · 15/07/2023 19:53

We have two large cars so I always park at the back of car parks, away from other people, or parent and child if I have the kids with me. I like to ensure everybody can get in their car not just me. It's me who has the big car so others shouldn't suffer because of that.

TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening · 15/07/2023 19:53

I drive a Mini and am a size 8, I'd park there, it's perfectly legal, their car and size is not my problem.

PonkyPonky · 15/07/2023 20:01

YANBU. They should have found a space their car would fit in, not just assume they can have a free ‘overflow’ space next to them. But really something should be done about these ridiculous tiny spaces in some train station car parks. I went in one once and parked in a marked space in my teeny tiny 1999 ford fiesta and even my tyres were touching the lines on both sides! And that’s about the smallest car there is.

Trenda · 15/07/2023 20:07

I expect this is a tactic some drivers of larger cars use to ensure they can comfortably get back in their car. If 2 of them park leaving a space between them they can sit right up to the white line and expect that their combined size will intimidate the drivers of smaller cars and thus have secured a lovely unpaid for space .
You ,OP,did not play their game, so you needed to be told off. I hope you remember this when you next use that car park - and look for the vacant spaces between the monsters so you can park (wonkily if you like) as close to the while line as you can.

What paranoid twaddle is this? 😄 There's no campaign by drivers of big cars.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 15/07/2023 20:14

I’m lucky enough to be disabled so have a blue badge. Wide spaces r us.

ttcat37 · 15/07/2023 20:22

Seems like the unpopular opinion but I always leave plenty of space on the driver’s side. I don’t want to get my car dinged, and I don’t want someone to struggle getting into their car, whether they’re old and can’t nimbly slither in, pregnant, fat or whatever really. I think it’s inconsiderate to not leave enough space. Blame the people who paint the spaces- I have a Vw golf which is a fairly average sized car I think and even that is almost up to the lines in some places. The best car parks are the ones that have spaces between the spaces for opening doors!

BellaJuno · 15/07/2023 20:24

TulipCat · 15/07/2023 19:09

My not-large but new car has auto reverse for this very scenario. It backs out without you needing to be in the car. Maybe they should change cars if they are going to get annoyed at people parking legitimately next to them.

I want this car, I hate parking up!

I agree. You can't control who comes in after you but I'll park driver door to driver door when I can with enough space for us both.

I guess I kind of hope others will do the same but experience and this thread shows me, nope they don't.
