To want my husband to have a glass of wine?

sikinos · 14/07/2023 22:31

Ok I know I am being unreasonable. Alcohol is not good for you, and you shouldn’t need it to have fun or relax.

But I really like wine. Especially red. But will drink white and rosé. I have a glass with dinner, or at the bar.

DH doesn’t drink much at all. He does rarely, but even rarer for it to be wine. As such, I can never really buy or open a bottle of red at home as I won’t finish the bottle before it goes off.

Plus I feel weird drinking wine on my own, and feel a little judged (all in my head). DH says he doesn’t much like the taste of wine but moreover he says he doesn’t need to drink to relax or have a good time. But for me, personally, however right or wrong it is, I feel like I far more enjoy an dinner or time at a bar if I have a glass of wine. It makes me more chatty and relaxed. I’m not talking anything more than a medium or sometimes large glass of wine.

For some reason the price doesn't show on that screenshot. Around £11

PomTiddlyPomPom · 15/07/2023 07:58

Years ago I made the mistake of introducing my husband to wine, he was previously a 'lads lad' lager/beer drinker.
In my short sightedness, I didn't realise this would mean less wine for me or double the cost of the wine.
I can only see positives in OPs situation!!
I would either buy small bottles (some of them are okay, wouldn't win any prizes but do the job) or start drinking slightly larger glasses from a big bottle 😉

XiCi · 15/07/2023 08:08

Red wine does not go off in 2 days. If you're drinking a bottle every 4 days just buy the bottle. There really is no problem here. If you want to drink less those mini bottles are cheap as chips with a Tesco clubcard.

Leave your DH alone. Its pathetic you're not able to have a drink without someone doing it with you.

Sheeesh this was meant to be light-hearted! I know not to try and convince someone to drink if they don’t want to.

To me it would be wasteful to spend £15 on a bottle of wine and pour £7.50 worth down the drain! Will look up a vaccuvin!

Thank you for the tip of wine society. Just saw 6 half bottles for £100. Maybe a christmas present to me from me.

Just realised I should say there are two wine society websites I think. This is the website I meant - it's a cooperative that's not aiming to make a profit.

You do have to be a member, unhelpfully, but there might be a way past that. I have always enjoyed everything I have had from there and they have an "enjoy it or we'll replace it" guarantee. If you haven't come across them they're fab for normal sized bottles too and I reckon you get a better price than from the supermarket.

Obviously YABU - but aside from what others have said I think people that like drinking and think it will make others more relaxed and chatty don't realise it doesn't work like that for everyone.

Personally, when I drink wine these days, it'll make me a bit chattier for a while, and then abruptly make me feel very tired and want to go to bed NOW. So all in all, my companion will have a more fun night if I don't drink, because I will just be too tired to be fun otherwise.

Ineedsleepandcoffee · 15/07/2023 08:13

You really don't need to spend £15 on a bottle of wine

DustyLee123 · 15/07/2023 08:15

I no longer drink, in part because it affects my sleep and I now seem to have developed an allergy, but also because watching my DH drink a bottle every night makes me feel uncomfortable. And yes, I do judge him.

CoinsinaJar · 15/07/2023 08:19

My DH has stopped drinking for health reasons. Fair enough.

I buy the quarter sized bottles and refill them from a large (full size) bottle when I've collected 4 empty small ones. It means I can have a nice glass of wine if I fancy one, without wasting it as it goes off once opened.

Peony654 · 15/07/2023 08:33

I have a similar situation but I don’t mind DH not drinking (he’s an adult, he can make his own choices), and I don feel guilty about drinking wine myself. There’s plenty of solutions - get a wine preservation system, buy half bottles or boxes (wine society do good ones), and if you’re having a large glass with dinner surely a bottle is finished in 3-4 days? I regularly drink a bottle over a week

YukoandHiro · 15/07/2023 08:34

Half bottles. It's fine to have a glass on your own.

cariadlet · 15/07/2023 08:38

I must have really bad taste buds.

My partner doesn't like wine but I occasionally fancy a glass. I don't drink often so a bottle lasts me for weeks.
I've never noticed it tasting off. 😳

bellac11 · 15/07/2023 08:38

sikinos · 14/07/2023 22:38

If I have a glass of wine it’s usually a medium glass, and then I won’t drink for another 2 days or so.

Not seen any good wine in a box, and the little bottles at the supermarket tend to be overpriced for the amount. Maybe I can get some nicer ones online.

But in the same way you're wanting/asking him to drink wine that he doesnt want, why dont you just finish the wine up when you dont want it - see how ridiculous that is?

The whole OP is ridiculous to be honest but you did recognise that you are unreasonable

Shoxfordian · 15/07/2023 08:41

I understand how you would feel like that op, I love sharing a bottle of wine with my husband and I wouldn’t be that happy if he stopped drinking

Oblomov23 · 15/07/2023 08:44

YABU and this is easily resolved. Buy small bottles, or half bottles, or a box of red which lasts ages. You have a wierd view of it - "wierd" and "judged", means you have issues that need resolving.

Mariposista · 15/07/2023 09:10

MIL has this issue - she loves prosecco, her husband hates it. He got her one if those special corks last Christmas 🤣
When she discovered she could get the tiny bottles she was so happy 🤣🤣🤣 🥂

liveforsummer · 15/07/2023 09:38

You can get minis and 50cl bottles however it costs more in the long run. You could always just buy the bigger one and cook or buy on a Friday then spread over the weekend. A bottle of white wine is fine in the fridge for a few days. If you buy wine by the glass in a restaurant or bar it could well have been open for days and you'd have no idea. You can also get kids that keep wine grease for longer by expelling air.

ChrisPPancake · 15/07/2023 09:39

How are you storing your open bottles? Bottle of red lasts a week in the (cool, dark) cupboard under our stairs, but max 2 days on the side and not just because I drink it if I see it

Also the small bottles may cost more per litre, but if you factor in how much you say you chuck away then theyr probably cheaper 🤷

TheYearOfSmallThings · 15/07/2023 09:47

My friend likes a glass of red wine with a meal. Her now-husband prefers a beer if anything. When they first moved in together he bought her a case of half bottles of her preferred wine, and she knew they were destined to be together Grin

GrumpyPanda · 14/07/2023 22:49

Another vote for the vacuvin. And your husband is not BU to not want to drink but dearie me, he sounds really patronizing to "not need a drink to have a good time" when "I don't enjoy it" is all that is needed.

The husband is the one being pressured to drink, yet he’s the bad guy?
Only on MN! 😅

That's almost £17 for a half bottle OP! Much cheaper to buy a full size bottle and throw the rest away or use it in cooking

Dumbphone · 15/07/2023 10:01

I don’t love wine, when I have some left over from a dinner party I freeze it, white goes in gravies for chicken or pork, red in sauces with tomato. Yum.

Blossomtoes · 15/07/2023 10:05

My bloke’s a recovering alcoholic so obviously doesn’t drink at all (Thank God). He doesn’t mind my having the odd glass of wine at home. I’ve actually forgotten all about an open bottle for a couple of weeks and it’s been fine. Screw top bottles are your friend.

Mrsjayy · 15/07/2023 10:10

YoSof · 14/07/2023 22:41

I read that as “caravan” and was genuinely baffled for a good 30 seconds!

Me too then I had to Google what a Coravin was 😳

Op just drink your wine over a couple of days it won't go off at all, your poor husband how dare he not like wine 😀

Catspyjamas17 · 15/07/2023 10:14

Yes it doesn't go off that quickly. My problem is more that once I've opened a full sized bottle, it encourages me to drink it a bit faster than I ought to, because it's there.

5128gap · 15/07/2023 10:18

OP, with a practically teetotal partner, you have won the relationship lottery.
Never will you need to worry about who's going to drive. Never will you have a day where you have to do everything because he's overdone it the night before. Never will you have to worry about whether his drinking has crept up with that work stress he's under. You'll never be posting on here asking 'is this normal...?'
Yes, I'm sure it would be nice for you if his drinking patterns aligned with your own, but honestly that's tiny compared to the advantages.
