To want my husband to have a glass of wine?

Ok I know I am being unreasonable. Alcohol is not good for you, and you shouldn’t need it to have fun or relax.

But I really like wine. Especially red. But will drink white and rosé. I have a glass with dinner, or at the bar.

DH doesn’t drink much at all. He does rarely, but even rarer for it to be wine. As such, I can never really buy or open a bottle of red at home as I won’t finish the bottle before it goes off.

Plus I feel weird drinking wine on my own, and feel a little judged (all in my head). DH says he doesn’t much like the taste of wine but moreover he says he doesn’t need to drink to relax or have a good time. But for me, personally, however right or wrong it is, I feel like I far more enjoy an dinner or time at a bar if I have a glass of wine. It makes me more chatty and relaxed. I’m not talking anything more than a medium or sometimes large glass of wine.

Buy a vacuvin, even work on prosecco! DH often has a beer & I'll have just a glass in evenings.

TennisWithDeborah · 14/07/2023 22:53

I know what you mean OP but it’s very annoying when you don’t want a drink and someone is trying to push you into it. The “I don’t need it” retort is condescending, but it might be a last resort when a polite “no thanks” doesn’t work.

Henbags · 14/07/2023 22:55

Red wine will last a week once opened, so leaves you plenty of time to finish it. White will last about 3-4 days.

WhatTheHeckIsIt · 14/07/2023 22:56

It’s not his responsibility to make you feel a particular way about the alcohol you drink. In the kindest of ways, grow up. Swap drinking wine in your post for smoking a ciggie or having a toot of smack - doesn’t read as well does it!

Ugzbugz · 14/07/2023 22:56

Just have a glass or 2 and enjoy it. Wine lasts a good few days open and I know wine and pink can be frozen!

Mojoj · 14/07/2023 22:56

LTB

Karrpt · 14/07/2023 22:59

Fuck me. How is it overpriced?! Just buy the wine and drink what you want from the bottle 🤷🏽‍♀️

MotherOfClogs · 14/07/2023 23:00

People drink as a social activity

He doesn't have to drink, but no of course it's not the same for you whether he does or not- I think the only people who think this are not social drinkers themselves.

sikinos · 14/07/2023 23:02

Sheeesh this was meant to be light-hearted! I know not to try and convince someone to drink if they don’t want to.

To me it would be wasteful to spend £15 on a bottle of wine and pour £7.50 worth down the drain! Will look up a vaccuvin!

Thank you for the tip of wine society. Just saw 6 half bottles for £100. Maybe a christmas present to me from me.

Pressthespacebar · 14/07/2023 23:06

Op you just need to drink the whole bottle then it won’t go to waste. Hope that helps 👍

KimberleyClark · 14/07/2023 23:08

Just get some small bottles.

QuillBill · 14/07/2023 23:09

You aren't saving money if he drinks it versus pouring it down the sink. What happens to the half of the bottle you don't drink doesn't matter as long as you are having what you want to have.

Groutyonehereagain · 14/07/2023 23:10

I think you’re being completely unreasonable @sikinos . You can’t expect someone to drink something they don’t want or enjoy, just to keep you happy, FFS.

Karrpt · 14/07/2023 23:11

So get a cheaper bottle. There's no need to spend £15 every time with the amount of choice these days

ItsNotTheGirlsWhoRiotAndStartWars · 14/07/2023 23:15

Can I have his glass? I live in Yorkshire but could commute!!. 😘

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 14/07/2023 23:21

I don't drink and I don't ask my DH not to so he shouldn't ask me to. When I did he didn't drink wine anyway lol

Shortkiwi · 14/07/2023 23:22

There are some mini bottles in supermarkets that are half decent and only cost £2-3.

Wife2b · 14/07/2023 23:22

The solution is obvious, finish the bottle 😁

Fifiesta · 14/07/2023 23:24

Waitrose *used to sell V small bottles of red wine - which would definitely be cheaper than £15 a bottle (gulp!)

  • Probably still do, I can’t confirm, I still haven’t ever spend £15 on a non-celebration bottle in any case (pun intended)🙃
AdoraBell · 14/07/2023 23:24

You can freeze wine and use it for cooking, or buy small bottles.

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 14/07/2023 23:25

What is it with the constancy posts atm from people wanting their partners to drink?

Utterly bizarre.

Strawberrypicnic · 14/07/2023 23:26

I quite often spread out a bottle of wine over three weekends if my partner doesn't want to share it. Not sure if you should but I've never suffered any ill effects! You can tell instantly if it's gone off.

RWB9 · 14/07/2023 23:27

Tesco have a deal on mini bottles 4 for the price of 3, so if you get 4 mini bottles, that’s equivalent to a full bottle and it’ll likely cost less.

I know what you mean, I feel the same when I eat chocolate and my husband doesn’t! I know I’m being a greedy bugger and I’d love to share the guilt!

saltinesandcoffeecups · 14/07/2023 23:30

Either get over the drinking solo thing, factor in the wastage to your experience, get a good sealer for your bottles. Reds last longer than whites do in my experience and life is too short to forgo the enjoyment of an expensive (due to wastage) glass or two of wine.
