Currently on holiday in Germany and did a day trip to Nuremberg. It's so pretty, that it takes your breath away. I have never heard anyone mention this place unless in a historical context of what happened there in WW2.
Just thought I would mention it in case anyone else is in Germany this summer!

Ok well now I really want to go!!
No money u fortunately, but I'll file it away for the future.

How lovely to hear all this enthusiasm for Germany and Germany as a holiday destination! 👍👍👍👍
(German teacher who would be a millionaire if she had a pound for every time a pupil has chosen Spanish and dropped German, because 'that's where we go on holiday')

forgot to say "Feuchtwangen" makes me laugh. (reminds me of Waldfeucht, where i used to live)

My husband did a few stints there as one of the players in the summer shows so it’s close to our hearts and is just a lovely little town.

Pollywoddles · 15/07/2023 10:33

But yes, the name always makes me laugh too!

Germany is a wonderful country and I agree it’s massively underrated as a tourist destination 🥰

Shhhhhh

one of the very many reasons bloody love Germany as a holiday destination is a dearth of irritating English tourists 🤣

My 12 yo son is teaching himself German! His high school offers Spanish or Japanese. He wants to learn some German for our holiday. He is really enjoying learning it.

MorrisZapp · 15/07/2023 10:49

How big is it? Any decent shopping?

PerspiringElizabeth · 15/07/2023 11:16

Ooh might I have found the destination for my first solo trip??

MorrisZapp · 15/07/2023 11:21

I did German at school. If you're Scottish you're halfway there, no pronunciation needed.

Porageeater · 15/07/2023 11:26

Regensburg is a nice town too. I am going to put this Romantic road drive on my bucket list

creamegglover · 15/07/2023 11:33

If you loved Nuremberg, i thoroughly recommend Bamberg - only 45 mins away, and World Cultural Heritage. And Franconian Switzerland, stunning scenery and pittoresque little villages!

Playmobil world?! Shock

That was my reaction! Grin

Crikeyalmighty · 15/07/2023 11:45

@MorrisZapp it's pretty big, maybe size of Norwich, York or Oxford- and lovely shopping -

Crikeyalmighty · 15/07/2023 11:49

If I can also mention at the Ramada in nurnberg I got a huge and fantastic main course for 13 euros and a very nice glass of Riesling for 6 euros - at the moment Germany looks cheap compared to UK and fully stocked shops, I also saw very few empty shops - it has a lovely market in the centre too - if Germany is in recession it will blow your mind that the UK is saying it isn't

FruitTartlet · 15/07/2023 15:12

This is great, I love a good travel thread! Gathering tips for the future.

Cornettoninja · 15/07/2023 15:24

I have family in and around Ingolstadt (between Munich and Nuremberg) and am planning to take dd there soon. I haven’t been for ages but it’s such a beautiful part of the world.

Its a great summer destination, the weather tends to be great and there seems to be lots of lakes to descend on in place of beaches.

I've done it solo, loved it

LlynTegid · 15/07/2023 16:14

Thank you OP, I have thought of going there when in Germany and have not done so thus far.

Regensberg is lovely too as someone has said.

Whenwillglorioussummercome · 15/07/2023 21:42

The Tegernsee is a lovely place for a summer holiday and you’re very close to the Austrian border there and can get a bus into the Tyrol.

Brefugee · 16/07/2023 09:35

if you go to the Tegernsee at the right time of year you can see a whole lot of football teams doing summer training camp. And test matches with interesting opponents.

doradoo · 16/07/2023 10:14

Also, if you're going to be traveling by train and don't mind the slower trains (no ICE) there's a Germany wide month long ticket available for 49€

LadyEloise1 · 16/07/2023 10:38

The people running the Nuremburg Visitor Centre / Tourism Advisory Centre will be totally flummoxed by the increase in numbers, particularly British, visiting the city in the near future.
The power of Mumsnet 😂

can you just buy a Deutschland Ticket like that? you have to be careful because afaik it's only available as a subscription (as in you sign up for it and can cancel at some point)
but. You can only cancel until 10th of the current month, to the end of that month. Otherwise it extends for a month.

So if you buy one on any date up to 10th, you immediately cancel it when you buy it. If you buy it between 11th and 28th/30th/31st of the month, you have to pay 2 months. But I'm not aware if they are offering it as a month ticket for tourists (it is heavily tax-payer subsidised so i can't really imagine that the ticket is easily available for very short term use)

Great if it is, but be sure to check first. (also if you download the DB App - Deutsche Bahn - you can buy the ticket in the app so you don't have to have a separate ticket/travel card)

LadyWithLapdog · 18/07/2023 08:02

Talking of trains, the small regional ones can be a real pain, with cancellations without notice, or faults. Obviously, nowhere on the scale of UK ones.

doradoo · 18/07/2023 08:29

Yes it's subscription only but cancelable after a month.

Here's the info on English
