Currently on holiday in Germany and did a day trip to Nuremberg. It's so pretty, that it takes your breath away. I have never heard anyone mention this place unless in a historical context of what happened there in WW2.
Just thought I would mention it in case anyone else is in Germany this summer!

it is gorgeous. Where else will you be going?
Bamberg isn't far and is fantastic, as is Regensburg.

we are driving from Frankfurt to Nuremberg in December. Would love ideas for little villages and places to stop if anyone have any! Little medieval type towns.

Würzburg is fantastic. There is a fortress (where people were evacuated to in the war, one of my former colleagues lived in it as a small child) and the Residenz is beautiful (you can only go in the gardens but they are free
The old town is pretty too, and the bridge with all the wine shops (probably not a good option in winter)

Depending which route you take Rothenburg ob der Tauber is also pretty.

I've long wanted to visit an event at the Norisring, it is part of the Nazi rally grounds used for various mass events in the 1930s. I've never otherwise considered visiting Nuremburg it will forever be associated with the negative aspects of German history for me, i.e. the Nazi movement, I just like the way they've recycled Nazi facilities into modern use rather than just destroy them after the war.

No you are not, I was a student near there, and had one of the most romantic nights of my life in Nuernberg.

Beautiful, and the Christmas market in the square is stunning. Thanks for the memories.

😊

Now I want to go at Christmas!

I went there many years ago and it is an abiding memory of our trip

AlltheFs · 14/07/2023 10:32

We did that area (all of the Romantic Road) as part of our 3 week honeymoon roadtrip across Germany, Italy, Austria, Switzerland. Was gorgeous.

ssd · 14/07/2023 10:42

Had never considered there. So many great suggestions here. Thanks op.

It is gorgeous. We did Munich, Nuremberg and Leipzig by train last year. Doing Berlin, Dresden, Erfurt and Weimar in the summer. Love exploring countries in this way.

The train is such a fantastic way to travel around in Germany. So quick, reliable and comfortable.

Thanks for this. DH is looking into taking our eldest away in October and I think this sounds like a perfect city break. We have only ever seen Munich.

Berlin is overrated. Go to Potsdam instead.

And if anyone can get to Magdeburg it has a stunning Hundertwasser building and you can have guided tours of it

HerRoyalNotness · 14/07/2023 20:06

We’re in Germany next week, we’ll have to squeeze it in

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 14/07/2023 20:06

We had the best time there a few years back - excellent museums, architecture, sausages and beer.

We did Rothenburg Ob Der Tauer on the same trip, which is a proper Disney style village.

We only went because we found flights in half term for less than £150 for all four of us, including luggage. So glad we did.

EhrlicheFrau · 14/07/2023 20:07

I'm currently learning German and would love to go one day, so love to hear suggestions and opinions regarding different locations. I'm glad you're enjoying your holiday.

waterlego · 14/07/2023 20:24

Sounds right up my street and I’m putting it on my list. Thanks for the recommendation OP (and others!) We have camped in Southern Germany a couple of times (pre Covid) but further West than Nuremberg, near Freiburg which is a lovely area. Vineyards everywhere, and fields of sunflowers- like I imagine Provence to be (not that I’ve been there) but probably much cheaper!

Agree with PPs that Germany is really underrated as a tourist destination. We loved the landscape, the architecture, the climate, the people, the food, the wine and beer… Both times we camped there we were given travel passes for free public transport throughout the whole Black Forest area for the duration of our stay. Not sure if they still do that, but we couldn’t believe it! We used ours to go to the Europa theme park (in between Strasbourg and Freiburg)- according to my kids it was way better than Disney. (And a fraction of the cost, much smaller queues etc)

I REALLY want to go to Southern Germany now.

GrumpyPanda · 14/07/2023 20:40

Swabian Alb mountain area in the south west for an extended and very much unknown holiday. Fly into Stuttgart or budget airlines to Memmingen or it's a two hour drive from Munich.

Lots of pristine nature much less crowded than the Black forest. Good walking and biking trails complete with maps.

Castles - the Hohenzollern (home of the imperial dynasty) and Burg Lichtenstein (restored in the 19th century in the romantic mode after a popular historical novel was set there.)

Caves - the Bärenhöhle (bear cave) near Erpfingen is very popular with kids, does real guided tours with exhibits. Michelin starred restaurant in town. The Blaubeuren area in the east near Ulm has a series of caves home to some of the oldest Paleolithic art ever found, there's now a museum with some of the sculptures.

Just south of the Alb is one of Germany's oldest universities, Tübingen, with a completely preserved medieval town centre and historically almost no tourism. There's even river punts for hire.

Nearby Metzingen, home of Hugo Boss, for hard-core outlet shopping.

Soporalt · 14/07/2023 20:49

Look up Die Romantische Straße. It roughly follows an old Roman road route in Bavaria from Würzburg in the north to Füßen near the Austrian border in the south. Every town is a gem. We did it in a week a few years ago followed by a week by Lake Como. But you could stretch it out to a couple of weeks easily. Agree Germany is a great place to holiday. We're here again now.

Regensburg is one of my favourite cities and the Orphee Hotel (and the restaurant) are absolutely lovely

Crikeyalmighty · 14/07/2023 21:10

It's brilliant city- my H is in Germany a lot with work and they have a plethora of gorgeous cities - all very liveable. It's ridiculously underrated. You can have an amazing summer holiday with kids in southern Germany and at the moment it's a fair bit cheaper than the UK . The maritim chain are good for family hotels at mid range. Many have indoor pools

I like Nuremberg, , Baden Baden, Ulm, Koblenz, Stuttgart, Düsseldorf, Bamberg, Freiburg, Garmisch, Heidelburg , Munich, Leipzig, Hamburg, Hannover, Bremen, Lubeck . I do like Berlin but have been so many times I'm a bit Berlined out.

I’m doing that trip in 2 weeks - drive back from Milan, via Austria , romantic road, Rhine Valley … can’t wait.

This sounds like just what we want to do. Did you drive or train? We are planning to drive from Frankfurt to Salzburg in Austria.
