AIBU to tell you how breathtakingly lovely Nuremberg is?

Currently on holiday in Germany and did a day trip to Nuremberg. It's so pretty, that it takes your breath away. I have never heard anyone mention this place unless in a historical context of what happened there in WW2.
Just thought I would mention it in case anyone else is in Germany this summer!

We're "up north" so got the ferry from Hull then drove to Würzburg, which isn't a huge distance from Rotterdam. After that the distances were pretty modest.

Neodymium · 14/07/2023 22:54

Would love some feedback on this proposed route. We are planning to drive. Possibly though will just drive to Nuremberg or regensberg and then get the train to Salzburg, as it seems expensive to take cars over the border. We arrive in Frankfurt on Saturday and are booked into Salzburg the following Saturday. So 7 nights. And it’s going to be December 😬. Particularly want to spend some time in Nuremberg at the christmas markets.

I spent a few days in Nuremberg a while ago and, although it is beautiful, I found something slightly otherworldly about it, which made sense once I realised a lot of the older buildings had been rebuilt since the war! I remember seeing the Coventry cross of nails in a reconstructed church there and thinking what an interesting contrast it was with Coventry cathedral and how Cov was rebuilt post WW2.

Heidelberg is a lovely city, well worth a visit.

My DH has family from Nuremberg 🙂. We've spent quite a few summer holidays over there, also visiting Munich and the southern Bayern region.

We had a week in Tegernsee when DD was little and travelled round the lake by bike with her in a trailer. Lovely area, with lake, mountains and forests to explore all with quite breathtaking scenery.

Such good apple strudel and beautiful Christmas markets. Incredible rebuilding - love it and the playmobile museum is so good. Cheap transport, accommodation and good grub. I love the place.

Thank you OP! Will be in Germany in sept!

we are driving from Frankfurt to Nuremberg in December. Would love ideas for little villages and places to stop if anyone have any! Little medieval type towns.

The obvious choice is Würzburg. Not a village but still a lovely medieval town

Würzburg is fantastic. There is a fortress (where people were evacuated to in the war, one of my former colleagues lived in it as a small child) and the Residenz is beautiful (you can only go in the gardens but they are free
The old town is pretty too, and the bridge with all the wine shops (probably not a good option in winter)

Depending which route you take Rothenburg ob der Tauber is also pretty.

I have been to the Mozartfest at the Resident twice in my lifetime. It was utterly magical both times.

SeatonCarew · 15/07/2023 06:22

*Residenz!

The towns along the Romantic Road are gorgeous. They should feel twee but don’t. Just really, really pretty.

Regarding PP proposed travel in winter. We were planning to go across to Salzburg and the very southern bit of Germany (Hitler’s place, a gorgeous castle etc) but the weather was awful and we changed plans. This was last Summer. Instead we went north, (chasing the sun!), retracing part of the Romantic Road and also went to Nuremberg. I think it was raining when we got there and there was some festival or other, so a bit busy and we didn’t stay long. Just something to bear in mind about the weather, though I’m not a very confident driver in rented cars.

We are looking for snowy cold weather! We are from Australia and want to have a proper cold winter Xmas.

@Neodymium I’m sure you’ll find that! Just plan the route with care for the more bendy stretches :)

Thanks for the tips. Good to know for future holidays.

The plan currently is to drive from Frankfurt to regensburg and then get a train from regensburg to Salzburg. But if the weather is dicey we will just train the whole way.

Maddy70 · 15/07/2023 08:04

It's a stunning surprise. It's wonderful and so full of history

LadyWithLapdog · 15/07/2023 08:08

@Neodymium we hired a powerful, top of the range, new, automatic German car. Driving it was one of the pleasures of the holiday. I’m not interested in cars otherwise, but can recommend the Mercedes museum in Stuttgart.

TheDogsMother · 15/07/2023 08:11

Rottweil is the prettiest little place.

dorisdoor · 15/07/2023 08:42

Sorry to jump on. How can we get to Nuremberg for the Christmas markets? There are no direct flights there. We want to fly from Manchester. Which major city would we be aiming for?

Germany has some amazing places to visit. I'd say in general it is underrated as a holiday destination (aside form Berlin which I think is overrated..)

Agree! We had friends who lived in Ravensburg which is right in the south near the Lake of Constance and the area is so lovely.

I'd be using public transport only so is it doable to do all this via public transport?

Crikeyalmighty · 15/07/2023 09:20

@dorisdoor you would do Munich or Frankfurt and then train for 1?hr 15- it's between the 2.

Brefugee · 15/07/2023 09:22

can i also put in a bid for northern germany (I grew up on the Lüneburger Heide) lots of lovely little towns like Celle, Lüneburg and further north Lübeck and so on. And it's flat so cycle tours are brilliant. And when the Heide (heather) is blooming it is utter gorgeous. There's the Heide Park (not as fab as the Europapark, but pretty good fun), lots of lakes for swimming in, and the excellent bird park at Walsrode.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber and Feuchtwangen are worth a look.

or you could take a different route and go via Lohr a. Main which has started to market itself (rather cleverly) as the home of Snow White. It is tiny (we only stopped because it was close to lunchtime, we were on our way to Frankfurt from Würzburg, and we saw one of those brown tourist signs on the Autobahn.

It's one of those chocolate box tiny towns with gabled half-tmbered houses, cobbled (pedestrianised) streets and not really much else - but for a lunch or coffee & cake stop for an hour it was great (free parking just outside the centre)

Brefugee · 15/07/2023 09:28

forgot to say "Feuchtwangen" makes me laugh. (reminds me of Waldfeucht, where i used to live)
