Colleague reported me to RSPCA

Not sure what to do with this one…..
I work for a big company and have been taking my dog to work with me
this week as my usual dog
walker is away. We’re in north Scotland so It’s not hot, I leave all the car windows open 1/3 way and come out hourly to check on her, offer water and a wee and walk her in my lunch hour.
oddly (to me) yesterday a colleague from a different department I don’t know at all was standing by
my car when I came for one the checks-
she told me she was reporting me for leaving my dog in the car all day, that I was an idiot and that I should be ashamed. I was so shocked I didn’t say anything, and today Found a note on my windscreen at the end of the day from RSPCA to say they’d had a welfare call about a dog locked in the car, they’d come and found her calm with windows open and had a chat with her thru the open window (?!) and were satisfied she was well cared for and NFA.

do I just leave it at that? Or try and find the name of the women who reported me and complain on basis of her being so rude? It all just seems so odd.

I used to work with someone who brought their dog to work (house to house visiting). He was a German Shepherd and was lovely. He never came in the office, only ever stayed in the car. It was an estate and the back seats were down so he had a larger space. The windows were open and it was never a security risk because who puts their hand in a car with a German Shepherd. The doors were opened at every visit and sometimes he would get out, other times he would stay in. Colleague never did it on hot days but clearly the dog loved it. It was no different to being crated at home apart from a bigger space and more freedom.

Well he did. So I’m just going to go with his report. But thanks!

You're welcome 👍🐶

Just ignore the idiots who think they know better OP.

That's because it only appeared later on when things werent going well.

The addition of the adjective “shouting”? 😂only because it wasn’t relevant, my
issue was her calling me an idiot! I got asked more so I went more into detail. Yawn.

Aggressive popped up too. And it's a pretty crucial part of your story yet isnt mentioned in your OP.

more Taken aback by her erratic behaviour and verbal insult to a colleague, which isn’t tolerated in my workplace. I’m confident in my care of my dog so maybe I do have a thick hide!

I've not read everything but regarding the dog in the car, sometimes there's nothing else you can do. You've taken all the precautions you can. Some people will always be convinced that if a dog is in a car, it must be cruel. I have no idea why. What do people think the dog is doing at home? Jmoreikrly than not, it's just curled up sleeping.
The RSPCA will never tell you who complained. If you identified the woman, what could you realistically do? Nothing. So if they say anything, I'd thank them for reporting the matter because it showed they care, but the inspector has visited and said there is no problem and show them his/her card. Kill them with kindness. Hopefully that will knock the problem on the head.

crazeekat · 13/07/2023 23:19

just cruel. poor thing. find ur self alternative dog sitters, there's more than one in north scotland u know. or take time off. all what responsible dog owners do. poor baby.

I can't believe any animal welfare officer would think this ok. Really. I am quite surprised. Something doesn't add up OP....

I agree. I think OP is making it up. If true and the RSPCA do nothing I expect that woman will report again hopefully. Also hope the company she works for intervenes as I doubt they would agree with OP's behaviour.

It’s just my
take on her behaviour- I found it aggressive. But that didn’t bother me, it was her verbal insult and general behaviour that did hence my
post.

How is it odd? You keep your dog locked up in your car all day!
why Couldn’t you find another walker or a dog daycare centre, a friend, relative?? Even leaving your dog at home alone all day is better then it being cooped up in your car.

Jongleterre · 13/07/2023 23:21

If the dog sits quietly in the car why couldn't you bring it in the office and have it snooze under your desk?

ButImNotOldEnough · 13/07/2023 23:21

You’ve done something the majority of people find morally wrong, and discovered the majority of people would also report you in that situation.

However, you do not think you’re in the wrong and nor do you understand why the majority think you are wrong so I don’t see the point in you continuing the thread. It’ll be 40 pages of “but she was fine, the spca thinks she’s fine” and “you’re cruel and don’t deserve a dog OP!”

YABU btw, HR will roll their eyes at you while also thinking you an idiot. They will be much more professional in how they word it though!

I’m not making this up🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️I imagine If
she reports
again she’ll be told findings of report
today. As mentioned my
work are fine with it, it’s only for a week but many colleagues have their dogs in the car all day and walk them at lunch etc.

To all those saying the RSPCA don't operate in Scotland, come on. You know full well what the OP means and if she'd written SSPCA then there would have been many posts saying, don't you mean the RSPCA, what is the SSPCA etc etc.

i think it's because they cannot believe the post to be real and someeone would be daft enough to do this, re is this a fake post

Just company policy, as I said before I’m guessing due to allergies in the office

You're overegging it now.

No way this happens in number. Did your woman report them all too?

I agree HR will do next to nothing here. They will likely advise you not to bring your dog to work and leave it in the car park and advise your colleague to address any future animal welfare concerns to them. They will repeatedly tell you not to bring the dog to work - assuming it’s a work car park.

if they don’t own the carpark
they will tell you you can’t leave work every hour to look after your dog.

they will privately sympathise with your colleague and think your are irresponsible.

I hope a national newspaper picks this story up and investigates a company that allows many dogs to be imprisoned in cars all day in their car park.

I’d honestly ignore these posts OP. If the animal officer who has seen dog in real life is happy with the dog then you don’t need validation from people on here. Don’t respond to them anymore

Ws2210 · 13/07/2023 23:26

OP just wanted everyone to agree with and validate her and say 'no,nothing cruel a out leaving a dog in a car all day'

Most people clearly disagree so maybe OP you should take that on board and not do this again.

Interesting that one of the few people agreeing with OP also owns a horse 👀
