Baby already has the odd Wotsit and Quavers but what’s your opinion on NikNaks? This is the orange pack - Nice ‘N’ Spicy flavour btw.

YABU - it’s fine, I’d give it to a 14 month old
YANBU - I wouldn’t give it

Huh? I wouldn’t give a toddler any of that. In fact I wouldn’t even eat them myself any more even though I’m a big Quaver fan! Ultra processed crap, esp not for a baby or toddler.
At that age - if it was a party - they’d get some cake and maybe regular salted crisps. But I bought the baby food type crisps/puffs for them (they may be rubbish too but it was 18+ years ago now so can’t remember).

Karrpt · 14/07/2023 18:13

Yeah, I just tip a multipack into a bowl for mine and leave them to it Wink

Karrpt · 14/07/2023 18:15

Fuck me @Housekeeperbatcocoa you weighed them? 🤣🤣🤣🤣

jacckandsalllly · 14/07/2023 18:18

Fuck me stop the planet I want to get off.

You're all acting like a few crisps is akin to snorting cocaine.

ibblebibbledibble · 14/07/2023 17:50

This thread is hilarious 😆 oh the horror of a child eating a few crisps! Yes it’s fine, of course it is. Plus, if they don’t like how spicy they are, it’ll get spat out.

😂😂

Stormydanielss · 14/07/2023 18:21

They'd soon spit them out if they weren't keen (I love them so no spitting out for me 😅) mine had Pom bears etc and they still love them years later - I want nik naks now

DonnaBanana · 14/07/2023 18:25

I wouldn’t because I’d find it a bit weird giving someone else’s toddler food

I hatr being told I'm wrong! (I'm also feeling very arsey because it's shark week 😬)

Wait, why can't a 14 month old have strong flavours?

I get salt and things likely to trigger an allergy in very small children but... flavours, will they implode? Explode? Heads fall off?

Surely they will either like it... or not like it?

As an aside, research is now showing that delaying introducing allergies is not the way to go

WiddlinDiddlin · 14/07/2023 18:52

Oh I know (not a concern for me, I don't have a small baby and the smalls I am involved with, I do not feed, I leave 'em to starve... I mean their parent does that!)... but I understand why someone might still have concerns about allergens.

I just don't get the flavour issue. Sure, keep them away from stuff that might HURT, don't let them bite into a big ghost chilli... but, strong flavours, whats the issue?

Only on MN would someone weigh some Nik Naks to prove a point 💀

😂 Facebook could never provide such entertainment!

I never said a 14 month old can’t have strong flavours? I thought NikNaks would be a bit too spicy for a 14 month old and that’s it really. We don’t eat spicy food in our house so I thought it may be too much for a child that wasn’t used too it.

As someone said upthread, if the baby doesn’t like it then I guess they’ll spit it out. I personally thought it was too much when his dad gave him a few but guess DS liked it!

Why would you feed a baby unnecessary rubbish? They need good healthy meals.

Because we’re really giving a 14 month old two or three NikNaks for a meal right? Be serious

@ColourfulHairbands on MN four crisps, half an egg and a little grated carrot is enough to sustain an adult until
dinnertime, no?

What I meant was babies need meals, they don't need any type of snack, let alone this rubbish.

And what is it replacing? Two or three strawberries, sugar snap peas, teaspoons of Greek yogurt? There's no nutrition there. Fair enough for an older child at a party, but completely unnecessary for a young toddler who would know no different if they were just not offered them.

ManchesterLu · 14/07/2023 21:24

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 13/07/2023 21:39

I wouldn't waste them on a 14 month old. Way too tasty. Give them the rib n saucy ones instead, they are gross.

This.

mummyh2016 · 15/07/2023 08:18

@IridescentRainbird actually once a baby is over 1 they do need snacks. They can't consume enough energy and nutrients from just 3 meals a day.

Well in that case they need nutritious snacks, not Nik Naks or Quavers.

Loulaa1977 · 15/07/2023 11:23

I would punish anyone of any age with NikNaks 🤢🤢

Iloveanicegarden · 15/07/2023 11:31

I really cannot believe the level of (no other word for it) ignorance on here. To be honest anyone who is feeding UHP snacks to a baby just over 1 is ignorant. For all kinds of reasons. Babies need nutritious food not snacks. Look at the list of ingredients. It doesn't matter if you are giving 1 Nik/Nak/quaver whatever. You are setting a train in motion. You are, ever so gently, introducing flavours, chemicals which are thought to be addictive. You are introducing salt in greater amounts than a baby needs and altering the balance of electrolytes in his/her body. You are substituting good food for less good with all the ramifications of that for the future and the (learned)eating habits of the child. Snacks spoil the appetite. Now I know I will be shot down for this and I really don't care. Giving birth to a new life is such an honour and is a responsibility that should be taken seriously. Arguing on a forum such as this about the rights and wrongs of an issue, with many defending their position by saying 'it's only one' and it is 'only occasionally' are missing the point. The OP asked 'is it OK to give a baby Nik Naks'. The answer clearly is 'NO', and by the way I'm not being goady.

Hugasauras · 15/07/2023 11:33

The answer can't be clearly no or we wouldn't have had 9 pages of arguing about it.

Hugasauras · 15/07/2023 11:37

Speaking on spicy stuff, I believe that babies have less developed tastebuds and perhaps don't notice the spice as much as older children. Certainly DD1 when she was very small tucked into all sorts of spicy food, even helping herself to those extra hot crisps that DH loves without blinking. Now she's 4 she does seem to be more discerning about spice levels, although is still quite hardy!
