Would you give NikNaks to a 14 month old baby?

Baby already has the odd Wotsit and Quavers but what’s your opinion on NikNaks? This is the orange pack - Nice ‘N’ Spicy flavour btw.

YABU - it’s fine, I’d give it to a 14 month old
YANBU - I wouldn’t give it

"Everything in moderation" as the grandparents used to mutter!

DC1 - weaned almost exclusively on organic, additive free, unprocessed foods and virtually no snacking on sweets, crisps etc. New Mum following the advice to the letter!

DC2 - a little less regimented, but basically the same as DC1

DC3 - much younger than her siblings, and as a toddler, consumed a fair few 'naughty' foods dangled at her by her older brother and sister. Not so new Mum trying to juggle 3 kids, 1 DH and full time work - no time to even read the advice let alone implement it!

Over 20 years later:

DC1 - obsessive with sweets and junk food...if it's there he has virtually no self control. A bag of jelly babies...gone in under 5 minutes

DC2 - can display the same 'greed' with the naughty stuff, but will happily eat 'approved' foods by choice

DC3 - can genuinely take or leave sweets and snacks and eats healthy food by choice and selection

I honestly believe that bringing up children to perceive unhealthy foods as a treat only fuels a later obsession with these foods. None of my kids are particularly picky, but out of the 3, I would definitely say the one who experienced a variety of foods as a toddler, both good and bad, for sure has the healthiest relationship with food.

Thesearmsofmine · 14/07/2023 12:37

Yeah I’d let them have one of two. My youngest anyway, I was much stricter with baby 1 and 2!

You've calculated the salt per gram, not the salt per niknak. Unless the average niknak is a gram.

I am aware of that. Unfortunately in the middle of the night I didn't have any around to weigh. But how much do you honestly think a single nik nak weighs?

PerspiringElizabeth · 14/07/2023 13:24

This third baby - yes, don’t buy nik naks but she’s had equivalent

First and second baby - absolutely not!

🤷🏻‍♀️

This thread is why I’ll never be out of a job.

Why? Are you a "Baby" crisps maker?

SophieHope7 · 14/07/2023 13:31

I don't think this post is real.....

FunnysInLaJardin · 14/07/2023 13:33

@ColourfulHairbands its fine! Ignore the nuts folk on here

DS2 once ate a whole tube of extra strong mints when he was about that age!

One or two as a taste/texture thing along side other stuff, sure. A full bag, no way.

This. We have a policy that anything we have that the toddler wanted to try (except regular coffee or wine) he could. DS is nearly 3 now and has had (and liked) unsweetened decaf coffee, sushi, raw onion, fried onion, sour cream crisps, 80% chocolate, pickled veg, etc.

He does eat healthily but I like to think we are expanding his palette.

Also, how sad is it that you never see Scampi ‘N’ Lemon Nik Naks any more?? They seem to have taken them out of the multipack.

This is what I came to say.

I miss Scampi 'n' Lemon Nik Naks Sad

AlltheFs · 14/07/2023 14:43

DD has always liked the spicy crisps. The odd one is fine if they like them.

I think it's good to let a toddler try any real foods. DS ate all sorts of curries including very hot ones, he tried all kinds of food. He didn't have a lot of UPFs as I mostly cooked from scratch for financial reasons and couldn't afford non essentials, but if I had another child I would delay UPFs as long as possible. They can be exposed to a huge range of tastes with just real food.

I just can't see the point, why not give them real food instead?

It's a bag of crisps so long as it's not the main thing they eat it won't do any harm.
My ds has a varied diet, eats veg, meat, carbs etc but I still let him have some rubbish every now and again, also if we are out or on a trip they are easy snacks.
Everything in moderation.

This many to weigh 2 grams apparently. Unfortunately I only have baking scales and not scientific ones so it may not be 100% accurate.

So yes, i stand by my assertion that one or two will have a negligible amount of salt.

Ballinluig · 14/07/2023 15:55

Omg these comments! I wouldn't worry if my 14 month old snaffled one - at 22 months they've defo had more than the odd quaver!! A bit like yours, mine was in critical care for the best part of a year, and something about seeing your child nearly die several times really does stop you sweating the small stuff!

Only on MN would someone weigh some Nik Naks to prove a point 💀

Excellent. Looks like the op's baby will have less than half the salt first calculated in a single niknak. Good news for babies everywhere!

Santa24689claus · 14/07/2023 17:07

I have given all of those to my 18 month old. Only a couple though. I was eating them myself and thought why not? I guess it depends on what the rest of their diet is like.
Mine always has lots of fresh fruit and veg and home made meals, so a couple of crisps won't hurt. (As long as it is only a couple, not a whole packet)

friedgoldeggs · 14/07/2023 17:37

My 18 month old snaffled some of his dads nice 'n' spicy NikNaks the other week and he loved them, much to DPs dismay. Grin A few crisps won't kill, my God. My DS mostly lives off raspberries and air at the moment!

Gowlett · 14/07/2023 17:43

Baby could eat a few of my crisps.
No problem with a few pretzels etc…

Those baby snacks are designed to encourage snacking. Fine if trying to fill up a baby who isn’t eating. But eating straight from the bag is exactly what the food companies want. Future customers!

ibblebibbledibble · 14/07/2023 17:50

This thread is hilarious 😆 oh the horror of a child eating a few crisps! Yes it’s fine, of course it is. Plus, if they don’t like how spicy they are, it’ll get spat out.

stargirl1701 · 14/07/2023 17:55

No. No crisps at all. Why would you?

SouthLondonMum22 · 14/07/2023 17:58

I bought some niknaks today thanks to this thread.

P.S I didn't share them with my 7 month old. All mine.
