I know I'm BU (ankle injury)

I stepped in a hole and went over on my ankle on 26th June. Did RICE, was shown how to tape it for support by a physio friend.

It's still so sore - i can't go up or down stairs without it really hurting, it's woken me up a couple of times when I've rolled over in bed. It's still also very swollen!

I know I should go to minor injuries but I went a couple of years ago for a shoulder injury after I'd slipped on ice and they made me feel like a total time was term.

Someone kick my arse and tell me to go!

Go and get it checked. Likely to be different people.

Serenity45 · 12/07/2023 13:43

Definitely go and get it checked. I hobbled round on what turned out to be a broken ankle for a few days thinking it was a torn ligament as was just a slip.

I've injured the other ankle since and was probably overcautious in going to minor injuries (just wanted to confirm it wasn't broken). They were absolutely lovely and said it was the sensible thing to do. Good luck!

HaddawayAndShite · 12/07/2023 13:43

It’s been over 2 weeks, come on, of course you should go. You were stupid af not to go to a&e when it happened, it could be broken ffs. And your “physio” friend sounds like a moron giving you advice on strapping when they didn’t even know what was wrong with it, it could have done more damage.

Hibiscrubbed · 12/07/2023 13:44

Go and get an X-ray. If it’s broken and you don’t support it accordingly, you’re in for a life of issues.

SeaToSki · 12/07/2023 13:47

Oh god. You HAVE to go. Ankles are so tricky and if you have broken a bone in it and dont know and therefore dont support it properly, it can heal out of place and then you are in for a lifetime of pain and significantly increased arthritis risk. I know because I was you (and I did get it x-rayed, and they missed it, and I carried on, and it has healed badly)

QuestionableMouse · 12/07/2023 14:34

I'm at urgent care!

Thank you for talking sense into me. I have a stupid amount of anxiety about medical care so tend to avoid it where possible!

Been xrayed, just waiting for the results.

Wow, that was surprisingly quick!

Right decision, op.

Lougle · 12/07/2023 15:50

Glad they've seen you.

megletthesecond · 12/07/2023 15:57

Go to A&E now.
I fractured my ankle 5 weeks ago and and just about walking again.

Bromptotoo · 12/07/2023 15:58

Hospital staff I guess get cynical and or hardened. It can show in how they interact.

Eleven years ago I had an accident on my folding bike on my home station's car park. You could say I fell off but the bike did something like an aerobatic quarter flick roll and I hit the deck hard on left hip and shoulder. Walked to the car using the bike as a crutch but couldn't get in due to pain.

Wife and daughter were summoned and took me to A&E - got into her car with a struggle and D's help lifting my feet.

A&E receptionist clearly thought a man in his fifties who had 'only' fallen off a bike was milking it and sent me to Minor Injuries along with a kid who'd broken her finger nail dancing.

After wife, D and I all got assertive I was grudgingly allowed an X ray. Neck of femur and collar bone both broken. Former required surgery, a week in Osteo ward (full of men with dementia) and 6 weeks on crutches...

QuestionableMouse · 12/07/2023 16:12

Hairline fracture. Fuck 🙁🙁

Well done for getting seen! Now you know what it is, it’ll have a chance to heal better.

megletthesecond · 12/07/2023 16:15

Bless you. Are they giving you a boot and crutches? They might want to you to keep it raised to get the swelling down.
I bum shuffled the stairs for about 3 weeks and had an office chair in the kitchen so I could shunt around and make my food.

RuthW · 12/07/2023 16:20

When I sprained my ankle it was 6 weeks before I stopped hobbling, a year til it stopped hurting

RuthW · 12/07/2023 16:21

Go to the gp. You can't go to a and e with a two week old injury.

You can. I did after 8 days and was in a cast for 3 months. Broken ankle and foot

My GP doesn't deal with injuries!

Waiting for the fracture clinic now!

Also I didn't go to A&E, i went to a separate minor injuries/urgent care unit.

If you don’t know or understand anything, probably best to not say anything.

Hairline fracture. Fuck 🙁🙁

You’ll probably get away with a boot, crutches and a list of physio exercises. A follow up at fracture clinic if you get lucky. Good work on going, that could have caused issues if not dealt with.

Idrankyourbananamilk · 12/07/2023 17:54

Practical tips: make tea in something with a screw done lid (thermos) and sandwiches or dinner in Tupperware with a lid. Plop it in a shoulder bag and then you can crutch your way back to the sofa. Hard to carry anything with crutches.

megletthesecond · 12/07/2023 18:28

You need a bumbag. I've been wearing one round the house all month.

Ooh good idea! Will amazon one! 😁

I'm in a moon boot thing which is better than a cast. Getting up the stairs to the flat is interesting though! 😬😂
