Unexpected or unusual advantages of weight loss

crochetmonkey74 · 11/07/2023 19:14

I'm on a weight loss plan and have just got to the point where people are noticing. Today a lovely colleague who has lost 8 stone and kept it off said that she always had a rash under her boobs when she was bigger and psoriasis on her ankle that didn't ever go, and since she has been slimmer, these have gone. It led me to think of little things that bother me and if they will go. Anyone lost a lot of weight and noticed a change they didn't anticipate?

I have had some pants in my drawer for 5 years that I can wear now. I'm going to dig through the pile of clothes for the charity shop and see what I should actually keep.

I got rid of seven bags of larger size clothes, two suits and ten jackets via Freecycle. I have space in my wardrobe and cupboards (for the time being).

crochetmonkey74 · 13/07/2023 15:55

you know what I am excited for? each item of clothing getting too big - and me putting them on Vinted or donating to charity shop- I need a way of cataloguing it!

I really enjoy just...not thinking about food.

I was quite a binger, and would wait until I was alone to seriously overeat.

Now I just don't really think about it much. I take noodles or something to work, and that's it for me until the evening. It just doesn't dominate my brain space now; I've no idea why it ever did.

Yes, I've found similar. Not all the time, but significantly.

I actually enjoy a slight hunger pang, and look forward to a meal later.

That said, I also eat before I get hungry so I don't switch to ravenous monster at an inconvenient time.

Icandothis1970 · 13/07/2023 16:41

@CallMeDiaz interesting how the focus on food has significantly reduced for you. Do you know what made/created this shift? Do you think its because you felt the benefits of weightloss and these outweigh the food itself? I find I have food in my head from the minute I wake to the minute i sleep.

CallMeDiaz · 13/07/2023 16:47

I had a tummy tuck! And in the weeks after I had no appetite, just kept making big pots of soup to exist on, and have just kept going with that ever since.

Once I had spent £6k it seemed better to make the most of it. I lost 4 pounds in surgery but have lost 50 overall.

Can do up own laces.
Can get off floor without huffing and puffing.
Can get into entire wardrobe of clothes I've ever bought.
I respect myself more.
My pre diabetes warnings have gone in "trigger thumb" and eyes.
My friends have all started their own weight loss plans after being incentivised by my 3 stone loss.
I feel mysrlf again.
I can lift heavy weights.
My bingo wings have gone.
The list is endless...
Well done op ...keep going

BarbieBunches · 13/07/2023 17:47

This is all very inspiring. I’ve literally just started but have such a long way to go so thank you for sharing 🥰

Ridingaroundonbuses · 13/07/2023 18:12

I can use a bath towel as opposed to a bath sheet.

Ridingaroundonbuses · 13/07/2023 18:14

@BarbieBunches Weight Watchers. I didn’t attend any meetings and just did it online.

Ridingaroundonbuses · 13/07/2023 19:09

I’ve got the first time in my life understood exactly what it means to turn heads.

I’ve had people doing double takes and coming back to check if it’s me.

Being told I look fabulous and being told I’m tiny by people I know and strangers too!

AnneLarsen · 13/07/2023 19:23

My back pain has gone. I really thought I had something seriously wrong with the base of my spine, but no.

Knee pain has gone when I climb stairs.

My stomach doesn’t rumble in meetings!

I’m on Saxenda which I buy privately. I need the full dose so it’s costing me a fortune but it’s worth it.

kitkat9999 · 13/07/2023 19:54

I stopped spotting all over the month.

CallMeDiaz · 13/07/2023 19:58

Actually my periods became regular as clockwork after years of irregularity. To be honest I could do without them every fucking 26 days but I guess it's a sign of a healthy system...

civetcat · 13/07/2023 20:15

Feeling physically more comfortable and mobile in general. Able to be active and stay active for longer and with less pain.
Feeling better about myself.
No longer needing help to get in and out of high vehicles on holiday (and being embarrassed that I required this). I had no idea this was caused by carrying too much weight.
Fitting into clothes again and not having to restrict myself to rent-a-tent clothes.
Definitely look better - one friend asked if I'd had a face lift.
I've lost three stone since last March (on 5:2 except for about 6 weeks on holiday). Still quite amazed that I've done it

Zerotorunninghero · 13/07/2023 20:21

What a brilliant thread. I'm the heaviest I've ever been at the mo and feel so uncomfortable, it's awful. This is motivating me to do something about it so I can feel happy in my skin again.

As a follow on from this thread...does anyone want to share their favourite recipes / meals that helped them with their weight loss?

Ridingaroundonbuses · 14/07/2023 06:56

I look forward to choosing an outfit rather than just wearing clothes because they fit and fit the occasion. It’s so nice to be able to get up and have a selection of clothes that I have chosen for other reasons beyond these two factors.

Sad but true in that I don’t feel anxious about people making comments about me and my size as they’d done previously in terms of calling me big, fat and other things besides.

I don’t feel I have to be invisible now.

AbsoIutelyLovely · 14/07/2023 07:02

I started horse riding again ❤️❤️❤️

Grumpigal · 14/07/2023 07:06

More comfortable to drive, my stomach and boobs weren’t all squished together and rolling over being sat in the car seat. Just felt more comfy.

Bearpawk · 14/07/2023 07:13

We'll really, ideally any health issues and inflammation SHOULD be the main reason for wanting to lose weight over superficial looks and pleasing the patriarchy.

My aim for losing body fat would be:
Lessening diabetes risk
Lessening heart disease risk
Both of which run in my paternal family

Plus being more easily active into older age and keeping mobility

BansheeofInisherin · 14/07/2023 07:28

Well, as I said upthread, I lost weight to reduce my risk of diabetes, but I also like looking good, and I don't think it is pleasing the patriarchy to want to look good. Maybe superficial compared with health motivations, but still valid.
It's great to buy a dress and not have to do 3 returns. Also can buy cheaper clothes.

Elephantinasandstorm · 14/07/2023 07:36

Can patriarchy not make it into everything?
When I was fat the biggest judgments were from women. Women with own will. When I lost weight, the most negative attitude was feom women. With free will.
It's like with clothes for example. "i need another dress. Can't wear same one to these 2 events". That's not for patriarchy. Men don't give a fuck if woman wears same dress. Women do. 😉

People lose weight for different reasons and no reason is lesser than other. It's personal and all reasons are valid equally.

I just remembered. Anyone with lots of extra weight gain, support your ankles. Mine gave way a bit and are now inwards! Also do if you are exercising as part of weightloss.

LadyBird1973 · 14/07/2023 07:58

I think when you are young and overweight (but still healthy), losing weight is more about appearance (assuming no illness within the family that you are trying to avoid). As you get older and your knees hurt and your bladder plays up and the dr says your blood pressure is too high, it becomes more about health - the illnesses of old age aren't as far in the future as they used to be and that is frightening (and highly motivating). I'm neatly 50 and starting to feel my mortality in a way I never used to, particularly with my parents getting older.

And we live in a society where people do judge others on appearance - it's nice to escape that by losing weight and fitting in.

crochetmonkey74 · 14/07/2023 08:41

I think that I am definitely going to have loose skin. Anyone managed to combat that?
MIne will be inner thigh and bingo wings area
