Unexpected or unusual advantages of weight loss

crochetmonkey74 · 11/07/2023 19:14

I'm on a weight loss plan and have just got to the point where people are noticing. Today a lovely colleague who has lost 8 stone and kept it off said that she always had a rash under her boobs when she was bigger and psoriasis on her ankle that didn't ever go, and since she has been slimmer, these have gone. It led me to think of little things that bother me and if they will go. Anyone lost a lot of weight and noticed a change they didn't anticipate?

For me, it's mostly about health. I was not hugely overweight, at the top of healthy BMI, but I come from a family of slim Asian diabetics. My dad was super slim but still diabetic because of cursed genes. So trimming my waist is crucial t stave off diabetes in the long run. My BMI is now 23.6.

The bonus is that clothes hang so much more nicely, but the main motivation is definitely health. 16: 8 has really helped.

ModeWeasel · 12/07/2023 15:25

Fitting into clothes again just in time for summer

HRV score has gone up significantly and consistently

Just feel better, more healthy, a bit more energy.

Feel a bit lighter.

Have more to lose, this is after about half a stone loss.

ModeWeasel · 12/07/2023 15:26

Great thread OP. Very motivating.

Screwballs · 12/07/2023 15:39

Oooh I forgot another, running up the stairs to get something without dying.

BunnyBettChetwynd · 12/07/2023 16:00

Such inspiring stories and happy outcomes here. What a brilliant thread of success stories.

I can get up from the floor easier.
My acid reflux and asthma have disappeared.
The bangle my parents gave me for my 21st birthday fits me again.
I can buy clothes I like, not just clothes that cover me up.
The duvet feels bigger.
I feel like I'm 10 years younger not ten years older than my real age.
When I run my boobs don't almost smash my glasses now.

DontYouThreatenMeWithADeadFish · 12/07/2023 16:04

This is going to sounds a bit grim but one thing I really noticed was that when I completely changed my diet and lifestyle it was way easier to, how to put this, have a nice dump. No yards of toilet paper required, just a nice wholesome non shy non sticky poo that required minimum fuss. Bliss.

Love that last one. Unfortunately mine do, but only because they are empty sacks where breasts used to hang out.

BunnyBettChetwynd · 12/07/2023 16:28

@Screwballs Oh I know the feeling. Mine are now like half filled water balloons, but they're much smaller now and I've treated them to a couple of nice new bras that organise them into tidy, boob-resembling things that stay where I put them.

I wasn’t even overweight so didn’t realise my stress incontinence was anything more than being in my forties with kids. But I had to lose weight going from top end of healthy weight to very low because I had osteoarthritis in my knees.

Well blow me down with a feather, I can jump, sneeze, run and laugh like I could in my 20’s and no stress incontinence. I can’t believe it could be cured as I wasn’t even overweight like I said. Really surprised.

That is defo and incentive.

I was just listening to a podcast by Dr Ranjan Chatterjee and apparently the back of your tongue is the first part of your body to gain and lose with weight gain and loss.

So that's why we stop snoring when we lose weight, as the back of the tongue stops blocking our airway.

In my specimen of one (me) my snoring stopped recently when I lost lots of weight!

SilkySuky · 12/07/2023 17:44

I sleep much better and have a lot more ahem vivid dreams. I thought peri was why my libido had tanked, but it appears not.

CallMeDiaz · 12/07/2023 17:51

Oh my god @SilkySuky this could explain a LOT 😆

SilkySuky · 12/07/2023 18:02

@CallMeDiaz I know. Mr suky is thrilled 🤭

DesparatePragmatist · 13/07/2023 09:14

Absolutely loving this thread. I'm at the start so don't have any startling findings to contribute - I was just looking forward to being able to do up my coats again but now I'm looking forward to lots more. On the way up, one of the most annoying things I noticed was when my tummy started getting in the way when I was doing yoga, so I'm hoping for unencumbered forward folds to be an early benefit

Icandothis1970 · 13/07/2023 09:37

I love this thread; please keep them coming! So motivational 🙌

Another benefit is that it forces you to try new things in kitchen.
I am volume eater so I learned to utilise veg in newer ways than before. It also combines with bit of health kick so I made own yogurts, ferment, grow more herbs, make own bone broth, tried making kefir (failed lol), tryingnew spice mixes etc. My weightloss diet was absolutely delicious. Worked out how to make own freezer meals so whenI am lazy I don't eat crap (like which veg to cook how much). It's stuff you keep after, not just when losing weight so it helps keep it off and keep the belly and brain happy at the same time.
I had so much fun being creative in the kitchen and herb garden. I still do!

I used to love cooking and making up my own recipes, going crazy with salads... Then moved to uk which was quite cultural change in eating and it took the diet to bring me back to my original-ish style. I took AL one day to do a cooking day for freezer stock up😂 Made 6 different meals + salad toppings while singing with alexa all day.

So for me benefit was loving food again.

My son got lost in the supermarket yesterday because he didn’t recognise me from behind! He said “I thought you were just one of those skinny mummies”

💪💪💪

Youcunnyfunt · 13/07/2023 12:29

I've never been massively overweight but a few years ago I had put on a few pounds... when I lost it I noticed:

Bending down to put shoes on or grab something from the floor felt so easy all of a sudden! No lumps and bumps getting in the way. Crossing legs on the floor didn't feel restrictive either!

I still suck at running, but it suddenly feels "easy" in a way I never noticed before

Youcunnyfunt · 13/07/2023 12:35

😁I definitely relate to the nicer poos. I also have clearer skin and no constipation these days. My energy level is like back when I was a kid or early teen - I don't get those horrible 3pm headaches or crashes at 8pm. I think my hormones are generally more stable because periods are way lighter and more manageable and I don't get mood swings like I used to.

Those unexpected compliments are great 😂

ManateeFair · 13/07/2023 12:38

My chronic heartburn disappeared.

My posture improved and my back pain eased dramatically.

My skin improved a lot.

My shoes were more comfortable.

It was suddenly miles easier for the nurses to find a vein when I gave blood.

Oh yes! The poos. I'd forgotten about that. Miles better.

crochetmonkey74 · 13/07/2023 13:43

I can get out of the car much easier and out of big squashy chairs.
I can wear my hair up without feeling that it is unflattering (I lose a lot off my face first, and somehow I have never really had a double chin even when I am fat) My shoulders look narrower and I cannot wait to have my collarbones back!

Also noticed my necklace is hanging lower !! so exciting

I really enjoy just...not thinking about food.

I was quite a binger, and would wait until I was alone to seriously overeat.

Now I just don't really think about it much. I take noodles or something to work, and that's it for me until the evening. It just doesn't dominate my brain space now; I've no idea why it ever did.

DisforDarkChocolate · 13/07/2023 15:21

I have had some pants in my drawer for 5 years that I can wear now. I'm going to dig through the pile of clothes for the charity shop and see what I should actually keep.
