This is a weird way to eat…

Each element on your plate separately…

i.e salad 1st, potatoes 2nd and meat last. (or whatever order your food preference is) DH has always done this and I think it’s so normal to me now that I don’t think much about it, however I took my DD’s out for lunch today and noticed middle DC does the same thing too.

AIBU that when a meal has been designed/ made its with the intention of flavour, textures and parts to go together.

Isn't it up to person themselves how they eat?

JeandeServiette · 09/07/2023 00:28

Very normal behaviour for aspies. 🤷

UnNiddeRides · 09/07/2023 00:32

I usually save the part that I like most till last, or at least make sure that my last mouthful of a meal is of my favourite part. Seems normal to eat in whichever order you choose.

Northernsouloldies · 09/07/2023 00:33

That's me, for example, peas 1st,chips 2nd pie last. Never bit o this n that. My Dw thinks I'm weird. 😁.

A colleague complained his children did this, and I pointed out we went to lunch at the canteen together nearly every day, and I also do this... I just get on with it with no fuss, though, so he'd never realised.

I used to date someone who was the opposite.

He used to eat the 'good stuff' first on the basis that the rest was just a stomach filler.

I can see the logic actually, but I'm the sort of person who puts a bit of everything on my fork - like a mini complete dinner in every bite 😊

kayserah · 09/07/2023 00:35

No it’s perfectly fine and up to the person eating. The meal is designed to be eaten.

Rossannah · 09/07/2023 00:36

I eat the best thing first, down to the shittest . I'm dead fat though so usually it all goes

EasterBreak · 09/07/2023 00:36

My son has always done this but he's autistic. My partner does it too and he's also autistic.

Hmmmbetterchangethis · 09/07/2023 00:36

My DH mixes everything together - will literally stir his plate of food. Then covers it in balsamic vinegar, regardless of the meal, then pickled onions on top.
Whatever is ”put in front of him!

Fifthtimelucky · 09/07/2023 00:38

I agree with you.

However, someone recommended me a book recently that recommended this. It's called ´"Glucose Revolution". You start with the veg or salad, then eat the protein/fat, and finally the carbs.

Apparently it's much better for levelling out blood sugar spikes and stopping cravings.

JorisBonson · 09/07/2023 00:38

My dad always eats the expensive thing last, ie if he has a burger and chips he'll eat the burger last. We've always put it down to him having a really poor upbringings and wanting to savour the good stuff.

IAmAnIdiot123 · 09/07/2023 00:39

I do this, I usually eat in order of worst - best.

Zarah123 · 09/07/2023 00:39

I’m like Barbara Streisand in The Mirror Has Two Faces - I love to create the perfect bite with a bit of everything on my fork.

This is a weird way to eat…
Yarnorama · 09/07/2023 00:40

I also do this.

Veg or salad first, then protein then carbs, in order of least to most favourite. Even in a stew I'll pick out a component at a time.

WonderfulUsername · 09/07/2023 00:43

For those of you who leave your favourite till last, aren't you worried you'll be too full to eat it all or really enjoy it because you're getting full?

I'd be gutted if for example I filled up on chips and mushrooms and couldn't manage all my steak Grin

MaydinEssex · 09/07/2023 00:47

Husband does this too, if I serve up burger and chips, he will eat the chips first, then the burger. He also does the same with a roast dinner, veg first, then spuds and then the meat.

Mumtothreegirlies · 09/07/2023 00:48

Yanbu my husband does this and it annoys me especially when he says he didn’t enjoy a meal, and I know it’s because he didn’t eat it correctly. My Bil does it too and I think it’s common with people who grew up with bland food like nuggets and chips because you can’t mix nuggets and chips in the same way as say pulled pork and jacket potatoes.

JeandeServiette · 09/07/2023 00:50

In the nicest possible way @Mumtothreegirlies you sound like a food fascist. Grin

There isn't a "right way" to eat food, and if they are certain things as children maybe it's because they've always been particular?

Rossannah · 09/07/2023 00:54

Those who eat worst to best, do you also keep treasured things to yourself? Family heirlooms? Best perfume, jewels etc? I wear them all, I use the best crockery, sold my shite 'work car' to drive a porsche ( bought with inheritance of somebody who saved everything for best and we had to chuck the lot) I use the best stuff ask if the time. I'll not pay for prawns to eat the salad first now

SoSadForCav · 09/07/2023 00:57

I do it too. Used to drive my Dad mad! I do mix somethings like hot chips & fresh tomato slices. But mainly one component then another one.

I like my food hot, so I'll generally eat the chips first then the burger because I don't like cold chips!

i 'dissect' food too like if I have a pie, I'll peel the top off, eat that like a cracker, eat the content of the pie, then the pie bit.

I can & do 'eat properly' in company, to the degree required. I might eat all my salad first for example but I wouldn't dissect the pie.

unless I'm eating in a 'decent' restaurant, it's highly unlikely too much thought has been given to the components being balanced.

fridaynight1 · 09/07/2023 01:00

I do this but eat the best stuff first. I'm usually full up before I get to the end of the plate so to leave all the nice stuff on the plate would be a total waste.

I don't get mixing up food. Why would you want to eat chicken that tastes of carrots? Two totally different tastes.

DH is the total opposite - he mixes everything up on his plate (if potatoes are involved he mashes them) before eating. A total ew in my book.

mrsfollowill · 09/07/2023 01:11

DS (who is autistic) does this- always has- eats his least to best favorite so eats veg 1st then potatoes/carb and 'saves the best for last' which is normally the meat/fish. If there are homemade roast potatoes on his plate then the meat/potatoes are alternated. The broccoli is forced down right at the start! To be fair it is far more tasty while still hot- no good leaving it it cool down and try and force it down at the end. So long as it all goes down it doesn't matter.

CarpetSlipper · 09/07/2023 01:13

Me and my kids all eat each element of a meal separately and then have our drink last. I’ve never considered this to be weird but one of us is diagnosed with ASC so it could be related.
