This is a weird way to eat…

Each element on your plate separately…

i.e salad 1st, potatoes 2nd and meat last. (or whatever order your food preference is) DH has always done this and I think it’s so normal to me now that I don’t think much about it, however I took my DD’s out for lunch today and noticed middle DC does the same thing too.

AIBU that when a meal has been designed/ made its with the intention of flavour, textures and parts to go together.

Very normal behaviour for aspies. 🤷

I'm the only NT member of my family, and I'm the only one who doesn't eat like that!

Jongleterre · 09/07/2023 01:22

My husband cuts everything up before he eats it! He then proceeds to eat with just a fork.

That's just American.

BashfulClam · 09/07/2023 01:51

I do this. Everything separate and eaten in order of least liked to save the best for last.

Pawpatrolsucks · 09/07/2023 01:53

I used to save the best bits for last, since having kids I eat the best bits first to make sure I actually get to eat it.

ArrrMeHearties · 09/07/2023 02:00

I eat foods on my plate separately unless it's spag bol but I make a well in the middle of the spaghetti for the bolognaise and eat the spaghetti first then mix the bolognaise through the last of the spaghetti

Interesting response, possibly ND DH but wouldn’t say DC is.

I think it gets quite strange when we are in a nice restaurant and eating a dish with quite a few parts/ingredients that a chef has taken time to compliment each other and he still does it.

In the flip side my other bug bearer with him is making any meal that involves bread of any sort a sandwich, I get doing with a cooked breakfast sandwich, BBQ food/salads etc but I made a really nice bit of lamb last week, with herb cous cous, a mint, aubergine and halloumi hot pot and served with flat bread and Humous and and he just made a big sandwich with the flat bread…

Writing this down I can see he can’t win however still think it’s weird he has no in between, compartmentalising his food of smooshing it all together!!

That's just American.

Or just a preference.

Who made this "rule"?

I think it's more 'weird' that you are so invested!

justme2022 · 09/07/2023 10:32

I eat everything separately starting with the thing I like least and finishing with my favourite. Spaghetti Bolognaise I dig through and get all the spaghetti before eating the mince last. I'm banned from ordering it when we eat out 😂

phoenixrosehere · 09/07/2023 10:34

Depends on the food.

I don’t like anything drowning in sauce. If it’s a roast which are meh to me anyway, I eat the sweet vegetables first because I will add a bit of gravy on my plate and don’t want them getting gravy on them and then dip the rest of the veg, potatoes and meat in the gravy.

In a restaurant though, I usually eat however the chef makes it.

Gooniesnecersaydie · 09/07/2023 10:35

It's really common. I've always eaten like this and I'm NT.

Shopper727 · 09/07/2023 10:38

I eat items on the plate separately I’ve no idea what my kids do I’ve never really paid much attention to them. They eat the food. Boyfriend will mix his up on plate and attempts to add brown sauce so I stopped biting it as it makes me feel Ill seeing a nice meal mixed up and covered in sauce. I might have not bothered cooking anything nice as every meal must taste the same

he has a choice to eat here though if he doesn’t like it he can eat in his own home

MrsRickAstley · 09/07/2023 10:39

I worked with someone who ate sandwiches with a knife and fork.

Alargeoneplease89 · 09/07/2023 10:41

I do this and not autistic.

littlejo67 · 09/07/2023 10:42

I will have a mouthful of one thing, then a mouthful of another and so on. Then I get to enjoy them all equally in rotation.

yellowsmileyface · 09/07/2023 10:44

There's no wrong or right way to eat, so long as it gets in your belly!

I'm a leave the best til last kinda girl. For those asking "but what about getting full?", I can always tell when I'm starting to get full, then I'll jump ship to eat the best bit before fullness kicks in. I don't find that being on the verge of fullness impacts my enjoyment of the food.

I only ever really get full when I go out to eat anyway. At home I can make the portion sizes just right.

Midnightstar76 · 09/07/2023 10:44

Saving the best until last OP

rileynexttime · 09/07/2023 10:45

don't they serve food in this fashion in restaurants in france ? Sure I've had a bowl of lettuce followed by tomatoes and cheese followed by charcuterie or stew ?
And in a Chinese restaurant don't you help yourself to one dish at a time ?

SleeplessinScarbourough · 09/07/2023 10:45

I do this. Eat all of one thing and then all of the next. I don’t categorise them as favourites or expense or anything and I do it in company and alone. DM hates it and tells others I do it and that I’m weird - but it’s my food.

PriOn1 · 09/07/2023 10:46

WonderfulUsername · 09/07/2023 00:43

For those of you who leave your favourite till last, aren't you worried you'll be too full to eat it all or really enjoy it because you're getting full?

I'd be gutted if for example I filled up on chips and mushrooms and couldn't manage all my steak Grin

I was brought up in a household where you had to eat everything on your plate, so “being too full” was never an option/consideration.

Now, if I remember, I eat from best to worst, because otherwise, full or not, I would eat the remaining favourite thing, but old habits die hard. I suspect it has contributed to me being overweight, though my sister, brought up under the same regime, isn’t overweight, so it must be partly personal.

Malarandras · 09/07/2023 10:48

I have always eaten like this. And I leave my favourite thing until last. It’s a habit I can’t break. If I think I might get too full I start on my favourite early though!

TomatoSandwiches · 09/07/2023 10:50

I agree op, I like to have a bit of everything on my fork for most of the meal, I go out of my way to have the last perfect bite on a roast dinner, saving the best bit of everything for last.

Maggiesgirl · 09/07/2023 10:51

DS does this, no idea where he gets it from. Now his DD does it too.
