This is a weird way to eat…

Each element on your plate separately…

i.e salad 1st, potatoes 2nd and meat last. (or whatever order your food preference is) DH has always done this and I think it’s so normal to me now that I don’t think much about it, however I took my DD’s out for lunch today and noticed middle DC does the same thing too.

AIBU that when a meal has been designed/ made its with the intention of flavour, textures and parts to go together.

Can anyone recommend any threads that doesn't mention autism?

Sorry, did you accidentally click on Mumsnet instead of Ableistnet?

I was brought up in a household where you had to eat everything on your plate, so “being too full” was never an option/consideration.

Now, if I remember, I eat from best to worst, because otherwise, full or not, I would eat the remaining favourite thing, but old habits die hard. I suspect it has contributed to me being overweight, though my sister, brought up under the same regime, isn’t overweight, so it must be partly personal.

I was actually wondering if saving the best til last might contribute to weight problems?

I mean on the basis that by the time someone's eaten all their least favourites, they're getting full up but determined to finish so they don't leave the best bit if that makes sense?

Just a different version of 'finishing everything on your plate' no matter how full you are.

Why do you ask?

Dontcallmescarface · 09/07/2023 13:14

I've always eaten like that. I prefer to taste each thing individually otherwise why not just mush everything together on the plate rather that serve it all side by side?

SackOfShitandRegrets · 09/07/2023 13:40

I eat the one I like least first to get out of the way and the one I like most last (delayed gratification)

No it isn’t. It’s a quip.

MrsSkylerWhite · 09/07/2023 14:00

Our children did that, gradually grew out of it. I still do sometimes, save the best bit til last 😁

Why? Do we put you off your food?

FabFitFifties · 09/07/2023 14:09

My DS does this - he is almost certainly ASD, though without a diagnosis, and is incredibly limited in variety of what he eats. Think dry foods only. The habit that I find repulsive is drinking whilst you eat - especially if you have both in your mouth at same time. Never enters my head to pick up my drink until I'm finished eating.

You could just serve a reasonable amount of food

Well yes you could but what about restaurants?

Or what if your guesstimate on how much you thought you wanted was off?

Verv · 09/07/2023 14:12

This is how I eat.

So often here you see replies like ‘maybe they have dementia; maybe they are neurotypical’ to descriptions of behaviour. I’d say the poster’s comment isn’t not an anti-autistic comment, but a reflection of the impulse to pathologise behaviour on this site. It must be maddening if you are, say, neurodivergent to routinely see all sorts of behaviour from lateness, laziness, disorganisation, rudeness, spitefulness , self-centredness or how you eat food attributed to your condition.

But most of the posts about autism on this thread are by people who have it/have kids with autism.

With restaurants, you can usually research beforehand and see pictures of the food.

If your guess is off at home, have it for leftovers.

If your guess is off at a restaurant, leave it or take it home (many restaurants allow this usually if they have a collection or delivery menu).

roarrfeckingroar · 09/07/2023 14:32

My partner does that. I find it odd but we're all different.

Those who eat worst to best, do you also keep treasured things to yourself? Family heirlooms? Best perfume, jewels etc? I wear them all, I use the best crockery, sold my shite 'work car' to drive a porsche ( bought with inheritance of somebody who saved everything for best and we had to chuck the lot) I use the best stuff ask if the time. I'll not pay for prawns to eat the salad first now

Nope, not at all.

I don't always do this, but if there's something on my plate that I don't like, made by someone else that I do like, I'll discreetly eat them all quickly in the first few mouthfuls to get them out of the way.

This goes for most vegetables served by my parents and in laws. Especially carrots. My mum buys cheap frozen sliced carrots, and my MIL boils them to oblivion.

But then many people cook veg really badly.

Then you don't eat all the "worst" stuff so there is room for the "best" stuff. In my case (if it was a roast), I'd leave a potato or 2 (I'm not a fan of roast potatoes), to ensure I'd have room for the Yorkshire pudding...which is the best part. It's really not difficult.

To be honest I think it's more likely people will just end up eating past full, as it's easier.

SirenSays · 09/07/2023 14:43

I used to save the best till last. Then I realised that meant the best bit was always getting cold and I was always pretty full. So the dogs often got the best bit.
