To find reality television music competition programs absolutely tedious?

X factor, The voice. The masked singer etc.

My partner loves them but they bore me to death.

I got out of the bath this evening to The Voice loudly blaring out from the tv. Its not what you want after a relaxing bath is it?

I don't see the appeal at all. I also find it particularly annoying how the judges all smile and nod at one another as if they're going to press the button but then don't.

Am I a miserable bastard or does anybody else feel this way about that kind of television?

When they first started showing them, it was new, fresh and a somewhat appealing way of finding new 'talent' now there so many of them and the format/s are not even mildly enticing I tend to avoid like the plague unless there is sod all else to watch, but usually I just find something to do that actually interests me.

Stickybackplasticbear · 08/07/2023 21:37

I didn't realise things like this were still on TV. So clicked on your post because I was confused about what you could be complaining about! Yanbu I think they've had their day and surely are very formulaic and dull now. If they were ever particularly exciting!

Comedycook · 08/07/2023 21:38

Hate them. They are so clichéd now. Blows my mind that any adult voluntarily watches them.

FrivolousTreeDuck · 08/07/2023 21:40

I have no interest in them at all and fortunately nor does my husband - but I'm sure there are programmes I enjoy that bore the pants off others.

Could you ask your DP to watch with headphones so you can ignore it?

BlueKaftan · 08/07/2023 21:42

I get massive second hand embarrassment.

LolaSmiles · 08/07/2023 21:46

They were good when they were a new form of Saturday night telly, but now it's done to death and I'm surprised they get the viewing figures.

I feel the same about the endless variations of "similar looking people under 30 go to a warm location, wear very little and shag each other" shows. They weren't my cup of tea but as a new format could understand the appeal. As a lasting format I don't get how they have the viewing figures.

Ffsmakeitstop · 08/07/2023 21:47

Can't stand any of them or any reality type show. I have never watched Love Island etc I just don't understand the appeal of vacuous people trying to get off with each other.
I have friends who love these sort of programmes and I'm very careful not to get into discussions about them in case they think I"m judging them (I am).

ILikeDinosaurs · 08/07/2023 21:49

Very, very, very boring. ALL the competition shows are boring. How many food shows do we need? Bake off, masterchef and so many others I can't name. Not to mention competition shows on art, pottery, jewellery, sewing etc. Every craft is mined to death. I love jewellery (metalsmithing) but I couldn't watch half of the last series because they made it so tedious.
I'd rather a show about the history of jewellery (for example). Making everything into a competition takes the fun out of everything.

FictionalCharacter · 08/07/2023 21:50

Yes, they’re boring now. I’d chuck them in the bin along with all cooking competitions and sewing competitions. Sewing ffs!

Changingplace · 08/07/2023 21:50

I like the Masked Singer because it’s utterly ridiculous, I think the ones where real people are competing have totally had their day.

ILikeDinosaurs · 08/07/2023 21:51

I hate Love Island too!! And the rest of its ilk.

I don't understand why people like "reality" shows. For a start reality is boring. But these are so obviously manufactured they are not reality but just crap.

These days I give up on terrestrial tv, prefer Netflix/Prime or just plain movies to take me away from boring reality.

FictionalCharacter · 08/07/2023 21:51

Ah I see I’m not alone @ILikeDinosaurs 😁

BiscuitsandPuffin · 08/07/2023 21:51

I agree OP they're godawful and I wouldn't care at all (people can make idiots of themselves on TV for all I care) but it's when there's just nothing on the TV because this slosh is taking up a timeslot where they could have made a real programme. Or worse, when you're round someone else's house and they've got it on. Or when MIL calls and starts giving you a blow by blow and ignores you telling her twenty times that you don't watch it.

IMustDoMoreExercise · 08/07/2023 21:52

Use to watch them years ago but don't know.

Comedycook · 08/07/2023 21:52

I didn't like it....I loved it

Fuck off

creativebutterfly · 08/07/2023 21:56

Love island, naked attraction, celebrities go dating etc ahhh can die a sudden death, they are what's wrong with TV atm. It's feeding into the social media age we seem to be stuck in.

Urgh Naked attraction is the absolute worst!! Really bottom of the barrel TV (fnar fnar). I don't want to look at narcisstic idiots' ugly bits! Lol.

I hate also that there's always the obliatory "celebrity version" of whatever show is popular (gogglebox/first dates etc), where zelebs get to go on for their own two cents. And they're all people I hate too, usually from the reality shows. A cottage industry of tedium feeding off each other.

You shouldn't have got me started, Op!

laptop3000 · 08/07/2023 22:09

I love all them types of programmes (well most of them, not love island)

It's just light hearted entertainment after a hard day. The kids version of the voice is much better than the adults version though

PurpleButterflyWings · 08/07/2023 22:10

Problem is they are all contrived now, and the acts are scouted. Already in showbiz/the west end/been on tv before. Already have an equity card, have a famous relative etc etc...

The way they present these acts as little shy, timid wannabes who are just performing for the first time, and then they sound like a seasoned professional, and it emerges on Twitter later that week that they have been in fucking Matilda or The Lion King on the West End just pisses me off.

Fake contrived bullshit. The Voice KIDS makes me boak! 😩

Bring back the days of Subo, Stavros Flatley, Will Young, Girls Aloud, Paul Potts, and the real treasures of talent shows when they were AUTHENTIC... (Not fucking fake and contrived.) Hmm

Oh YANBU @EiEiOhh

EiEiOhh · 08/07/2023 22:28

Thank god for that, I'm not just a miserable bastard then.

I cannot understand what DP likes about them, he even repeat watches clips from years ago on YouTube!

I'm equally as disinterested in love Island and have never watched an episode in my life.

Naked attraction is just weird isn't it? I saw that was on the telly the other night and kept it on for 10 minutes out of curiosity. There was some long haired bloke, entirely average, explaining to an absolutely stunning woman that he wasn't ready for a real relationship and just wanted fun yada yada. PP put it well above, narcissistic.

You make good points.
I'm sure I saw on social media that someone who did vocal for a musical movie was on one of these shows as a so-called new artist.

I miss Darius' Hit Me Baby One More Time and Jedward.

Oh YANBU @EiEiOhh

I totally agree, no longer authentic which is what drew me in in the first place.

Awwww, Darius R.I.P. Sad Turned out to be quite talented didn't he? Jedward not so much! But they were characters, and original, and entertaining!!!

In the early days of these competitions I made a point of watching. I think the earliest we watched was second series of Pop Idol when the big girl won and then we watched a few series of X Factor.

When I say I made a point of watching, it is because our DD was young and I was aware that many of her peers would watch these shows and I didn't want her to be left out. I remember when I was at school there was a girl whose parents didn't have a TV by choice. She was excluded from so many conversations as a result. We didn't deliberately shut her out, we actually quite liked her, but she just couldn't join in many of our conversations.

Anyway. The scales fell from our eyes after a few years and we began to see the strings and realised how manipulated and artificial the whole thing was.

Haven't watched for years now.
