To ask when your children were potty trained?

Starting to stress a bit and I know you shouldn’t but can’t even make the smallest steps as my toddler won’t even sit on the potty, just refuses to. 2 ys 8 months, and most other children we know are either trained or well on the way!

Eldest around 3.5, planning to try with my youngest (will be 3yrs 2mo) soon.

kayserah · 08/07/2023 17:37

Eldest was 2 years 6 months, 2nd was 3 years 4 months which causes me lots of stress at the time. But once she was ready she was brilliant and hardly had any accidents.

Wowzel · 08/07/2023 17:38

1 year 10 months, but even now i have no idea how it happened

angelopal · 08/07/2023 17:38

Both about a week before they turmed 3. Tried before but not ready.

Noicant · 08/07/2023 17:40

We started at 20 months but it wasn’t until 2.5 when she was reliably dry during the day and 3 until we stopped having a spot of pee in her knickers because she didn’t want to stop doing whatever she was doing to go to the loo.

Workquestion11 · 08/07/2023 17:40

Oldest, 3
Second child 4 and she still isn't dry at night a year later
Middle child was 3.5

BakewellGin1 · 08/07/2023 17:41

My first was approx 3.5 despite us starting at 2ish as I was encouraged to start then. Took forever and had accidents regularly.

My second I left until he was 3 and he was done in a week, probably as he understood more and was more developed. He literally has had one wet accident since.

mynameiscalypso · 08/07/2023 17:41

Just over 3.5. Wouldn't entertain it before and cracked it in a day. Now has the least accidents of any of the children in his nursery class.

mynameiscalypso · 08/07/2023 17:42

Oh and was dry overnight from Day 1 of potty training too.

Gpnever · 08/07/2023 17:42

I did the oh crap method with both of mine at about 2.5 and it worked first time. I would recommend to anyone , 5-10 days of work and all done for us x

mintich · 08/07/2023 17:42

My daughter was dry by her second birthday
My first son 3.5 years.
My second son is 2.5 and not ready yet!

NumberTheory · 08/07/2023 17:45

2 yrs. We did it then because I’d read it got harder after about 2yrs 3 months.

FlounderingFruitcake · 08/07/2023 17:46

-2 years 9 months
-22 months
Left it too long with the eldest and she developed expert bladder control and was peeing only like twice a day so barely any opportunity to catch anything on the potty. We’d miss it, get a flood on the floor and basically it was over for the day as the other pee had been during nap. So I went for it earlier with the second and it was much easier.

I think it’s normal they don’t want to sit early on though. They don’t really get why they’re being asked to sit when they don’t yet know what it feels like to need to pee, hold it and release on the potty. In the early days I’d stick the TV on or let them play a game on my phone. Then we switched to a fidget toy or book. 2 weeks and they were happy to go without any of that. I don’t think it’s frowned upon, I remember reading in the Gina Ford book a suggestion to video programmes off the TV and peppa on your phone is surely the modern equivalent.

Rainpigeon · 08/07/2023 17:48

Day time trained at 20 months but she had accidents still of she was stressed. Night time took a bit longer and wasn't reliable nearer 3.

Chickensoupandbread · 08/07/2023 17:48

It doesn’t work - he just gets up and watches the TV anyway 🤦🏻‍♀️ thanks though!

3 then 2. We didn't do anything different, one just disliked wearing a wet nappy and the other didn't care.

funinthesun19 · 08/07/2023 17:49

2 and a half
4 years (just before starting school)
3 and a half
2 (latter end)

As you can see above with my children, a bit of a mixed bag. Which shows that there is no perfect age. At 2.8, I really wouldn’t worry at all. It’s best not to compare yourself to the other children.

PurpleFlower1983 · 08/07/2023 17:49

Eldest fully trained at about 2 years 9 months, she was great with weeing but pooing took a bit longer. I think we only started properly at 2 years 6 months. She wasn’t ready until then but trained fairly quickly. We used the Oh Crap book.

CoffeeCakeAndALattePlease · 08/07/2023 17:51

Mine both struggled and not reliable until they started school. DD used to have poo accidents and DS wouldn’t be bothered if he wee’d himself…. he knew he needed to go but didn’t bother.

Fandabedodgy · 08/07/2023 17:51

Eldest about age 3
Youngest about 2.5

CoffeeCakeAndALattePlease · 08/07/2023 17:52

DD in night time pull ups until 5.
DS still in night time pull ups now age 4.

Annaisatwat · 08/07/2023 17:54

First two, I didn’t try until just shy of 3rd birthday. And they both took to it right away, dry at night, no accidents. Still asked for a nappy to do a poo in for a month or so after.

My toddler now - 2 years, 7 months (she’s 3 next month). But she wanted to use the toilet when her 9 year old sister did. She’s not dry at night though so wears a nappy to bed and a few accidents. Asks for a nappy when she needs a poo.

Milkand2sugarsplease · 08/07/2023 17:57

DS1 was 2.5 and got it quickly.
DS2 is just 2 and appears nowhere near ready to start.

Chickensoupandbread · 08/07/2023 17:48

It doesn’t work - he just gets up and watches the TV anyway 🤦🏻‍♀️ thanks though!

TV only when he’s sat on the potty? He gets up and it goes off or it might be easier to use your phone. You could also try the Oh Crap method which in the beginning is less about very regular potty tries and more about waiting until they start peeing and flinging a potty underneath them.

But 2 years 8 months isn’t especially old, presumably you’re not at the urgent get your skates on because the school nursery are being funny stage yet?! You can wait another couple of months and see. If you’re keen to coincide it with summer to run around the garden in a state of undress and minimise indoor accidents then September is usually still quite warm and another 2 months could make all the difference.

PinkPlantCase · 08/07/2023 18:01

1 month before 2nd birthday. He’d been telling us every time he weed and pooed for months before. I think bring in reusable nappies made a difference too.
