To ask how much did you ‘try’ to conceive

Having decided we want to have a baby and after six months or so of not much happening, I’ve decided to take action and started tracking my cycles properly, using OPKs and temping.

Although DH is on board with this he seems pretty surprised how planned/unromantic it all is. I’ve since spent a bit of time educating him on how womens cycles work and how small the fertile window actually is and it feels like the idea of spontaneously dtd and then getting pregnant is quite far from reality! Just logistically since we started cycle tracking it’s required a bit of planning to make sure we’re in the same place at the right time. It’s got us wondering for how many couples does it just happen, and for how many does ttc require a bit more planning?

I never did it. I've always been aware of my cycle length and used an app to track periods . We had sex every other day after my period and fell pregnant within a month with dd1 and dd2. I wasn't trying for ds and was on the mini pill.

FfeminyddCymraeg · 06/07/2023 23:15

Unplanned DC1 and DC2 was month one,

Appreciate how lucky we are.

JaninaDuszejko · 06/07/2023 23:16

Stopped using condoms, DTD at least every second day throughout my cycle. Got pregnant first month of trying each time (3DC). Vaguely shocked that I never had an accidental pregnancy in the 20 years of sexual activity before I had DD1 because I was clearly very fertile.

SwordToFlamethrower · 06/07/2023 23:18

6 years of trying every single month. That is 72 cycles.
Also 6 rounds of IVF.

Sat here nursing my nearly 8 month old. Didn't think it would happen. Wouldn't wish infertility on anyone.

Those who don't want to be pregnant are the flip side to those who desperately do. Both should be treated with equal care and importance.

Both scenarios are nightmarish. I really think more should be done to help prevent unwanted babies and more to help people become parents.

Survey99 · 06/07/2023 23:21

First time I came off pill at 34-ish, but wasn't trying/tracking as planned to move from flat to house first, but if it happened early it would be OK. We conceived 8 months after I stopped the pill and the week we moved into new home.

Second, just never happened, but we didnt do tracking of anything.

concernedalot · 06/07/2023 23:22

stopped taking pill - first 3 months just had sex whenever, then when it got to month 4 and 5 I started buying ovulation kits to check it was the right time and then made sure we were getting the action in at the right time, month 6 we managed to catch. I guess we were lucky looking at some of the replies on here

elliebelliex · 06/07/2023 23:27

I used the clearblue fertility monitor and got pregnant after our first try, I'd highly recommend it to anyone. It's pricey and you do have to buy the test sticks separately but it tells you exactly when you're going to ovulate and then when you can test for pregnancy.

Sheselectric77 · 06/07/2023 23:27

5 pregnancies, 1 conceived while on the pill, 1 while I had a coil, 3 conceived in the first month of coming off contraception with no tracking. It just happens for some people easily as unfair as that may be.

Phos · 06/07/2023 23:32

Not at all. Came off BC in June with a view to trying in September. Found out I was pregnant in July.

Babyboomtastic · 06/07/2023 23:42

First child, 3 months, second child first month.

No timings, no sticks and actually not much sex as I was horrendously busy with work both times. In fact, I want even in the same county as my husband for a week around my fertile widow/ovulation (I can feel it) either time.

I'm sure we conceived child 2 on day 3 of my cycle (I have two day periods).

We were very fortunate.

DramaAlpaca · 06/07/2023 23:46

Ovulation kits weren't invented when I had my children. I just relied on changes in cervical mucus and made sure to pounce on DH then. I never told him it was my fertile time, but he must've guessed Wink It took eleven months to conceive even though we were doing everything right. I think I'd have driven myself mad if I'd had ovulation tests available, it was stressful enough as it was.

Second time it happened the first time of trying, a bit of a shock as DS1 was only seven months and I was still breastfeeding. Third time I think it was about four months, again just going on physical signs of ovulation.

Babyenroute · 07/07/2023 00:32

Every month for 24 cycles, then got pregnant through IVF

wanttokickoffbutcant · 07/07/2023 01:57

I was lucky I guess as first month after coming off pill - did have lots of sex.

Wife2b · 07/07/2023 05:51

7 cycles for us using OPKs from the first month. We struggled with DTD on demand, we were exhausted, frustrated and husband struggled to finish. Eventually we used the syringe and pot method - it was convenient and no pressure for DH. It works as we got pregnant that cycle. It’s not glamorous or romantic but by that point it wasn’t anything more than a chore anyways. Good luck

justanothermanicmonday1 · 07/07/2023 06:00

When we first decided to try, I had bought all the ovulation tests, downloaded the Flo app etc. Fell pregnant first, miscarried at 6 weeks. Had 1 period, then fell pregnant next month.

Second pregnancy (36 weeks almost) fell pregnant within 4 weeks of trying.

Never in a million years did I ever think it would happen for me/us that quickly especially as I was in my thirties.

I realise how lucky and blessed we are and remind myself of that often.

X

marblemad · 07/07/2023 06:01

Got pregnant twice within a year both m/c's now nothing for the last 4 years

BatheInTheLight · 07/07/2023 06:07

Straight away with both. Husband disappointed that we didn't have more sex trying to conceive!

Curseofthenation · 07/07/2023 06:23

We conceived first month both times without any thought of using ovulation sticks etc. We just had sex at least every other day.

Friends that took longer naturally got more into testing and sex on schedule. I would say that the ones that took longer and had a less stressful time of it were the ones that didn't mention testing to their partner. They still iniated sex throughout their cycle so that it didn't become too clinical.

The ones that were more organised in their approach seemed to all get pregnant during quiet periods at work when the stress was off!

Curseofthenation · 07/07/2023 06:24

Curseofthenation · 07/07/2023 06:25

Sweet Jesus. *initiated 😂

Insidenumber09 · 07/07/2023 06:41

8 months and nothing so we upped the game with temping and ovulation strips. Got pregnant 4 times and had 4 miscarriages over 4 years but now have an amazing 8 month old baby boy (we were very lucky we are both 44). I have to say the massive game changer for us was using preseed fertility lubricant if you haven’t tried it it’s amazing and you should definitely give it a try if you haven’t already. Also I noticed the times I did conceive we’d dtd the day after I’d ovulated too so 🤔 always try to maybe just have one more try and not always just focus on before ovulation 😅 x good luck x

ChocBananaSmoothie · 07/07/2023 06:47

I was lucky and didn't have to try at all. Most were first month, two were second month. Fertility wasn't my issue but I did get less luck in other ways.

babyproblems · 07/07/2023 06:50

It happened quickly - 3 months of ttc, but we did ‘try’. I used OPKs from the start and we had a lot of sex 😅🤣

bryceQ · 07/07/2023 06:53

We didn't try. I found out I was pregnant randomly

pambeeslyhalpert2 · 07/07/2023 06:54

With my first I used to the CB OPK and got pregnant the first month. With this pregnancy I went off the flo app, then had a really stupid long cycle. Next month used the cb OPK and got pregnant.

Expensive but worth it imo... and yes having sex when you see the flashinf smiley is abit planned and forced but it is what it is 🤷‍♀️
