Cashless everything is annoying and inconvenient

Went to London last weekend. A concert in Hyde Park. Nobody in food/drink stalls wanted to take cash. Is this a new normal?

Yep , cash is seen as the enemy these days it seems

ChadCMulligan · 05/07/2023 21:11

Has been the normal for the last 4-5 years

jc12689 · 05/07/2023 21:11

Why is it more inconvenient than cash. I can see why the small vendors do it. Dealing with cash is expensive.

Hollyppp · 05/07/2023 21:12

Yeah the norm round me. Ice cream
vans are card only no Cash. I like it!!

Why do you struggle - do you not have cards and only have cash (where from? Surely a bank?)

YouveGotAFastCar · 05/07/2023 21:12

It’s been the new normal here for quite a long time - pre-pandemic too, although that certainly didn’t help.

It suits me, I never carry cash, but I can see the downsides for people who prefer cash for a variety of reasons, or when tech fails…

Sissynova · 05/07/2023 21:13

How is it inconvenient though? You have a card in your wallet surely which is easier than having cash, regularly withdrawing etc.

ThoughtfulCow · 05/07/2023 21:14

Why is it annoying? I hate carrying cash. Cash is dirty, unhygienic, inconvenient, less secure if you lose it you lose it, harder to track and budget with cash (I don't understand people who say the opposite).
My annoying window cleaner still wants cash payment every month and I wish he'd go cashless. He's probably avoiding tax but that's another topic.

Exactly. It's much more convenient!

I was also at Hyde Park last weekend and the bar queues were stupid. Would have been even longer if they had to sort cash.

jc12689 · 05/07/2023 21:16

I can't remember the last time I used cash. So much easier to use contactless. Mostly it seems to be people who have 'cash in had' type jobs that don't like it.

HellsTeethandBucketsofBlood · 05/07/2023 21:16

Where has this myth that dealing with cash is expensive come from? Its card transactions that take a percentage of the price. Cash is free? Banks just get richer from every small purchase you make

the80sweregreat · 05/07/2023 21:16

My old window cleaner liked cash too.
We now have a new one who is happy with a bank transfer.

DeathMetalMum · 05/07/2023 21:16

Even the toilets are now contactless. We were in London earlier in the year and the attendant was not happy I had a 20p piece to try get into the toilets.

Public toilets near me are either cash or card still. I do not have or even want contactless.

Quinoawoman · 05/07/2023 21:16

It is the new normal.

I don't mind too much - apart from the kids not being able to spend their pocket money anywhere. I think it is important to learn the value of money and how transactions work so I give my kids pound coins.

ThoughtfulCow · 05/07/2023 21:17

Are people conspiracy theorists worried that if we all go cashless then banks will control our wealth (which they already do) so governments can control us more?

Ilikewinter · 05/07/2023 21:18

I cant say it has any impact on my life - other than I've stopped going to the local chinese as he only accepts cash....but I soon found another so its all good 😄. I actually cant remember the last time I used cash to pay for anything.

the80sweregreat · 05/07/2023 21:18

You need a pound for some trollies if you don't have one of those token things that is!

JazbayGrapes · 05/07/2023 21:18

I just prefer cash. I do use card but i leave a limited amount on there in case its stolen and swiped.
I live in Bristol where totally cashless are still unpopular, at least my part of town.

Ask the Canadian truckers how safe they feel with their money in the banks.

Runnersandtoms · 05/07/2023 21:18

I'm with all the PP who can't see any benefit to using cash. If I have cash with me I would also have my card. And generally I don't have cash. I'd have to go out of my way to get some out of a machine then faff about with a handful of change once I'd broken into the note. Contactless is much more convenient. In fact loads of people don't even carry a card, just use contactless payment on their phone instead.

wildfirewonder · 05/07/2023 21:19

Yeah, I find it annoying. I like cash. But I carry both because the direction of travel is clear.

jc12689 · 05/07/2023 21:19

Cash needs to be physically handled and banked. There is a charge for commercial banking and handling cash. It's not a myth. Plus most people don't use cash so you end up having to do the cash banking side of things for the sake of a few notes.

It the time and effort of the cash handling that's the biggest factor.

LumpyPumpkin · 05/07/2023 21:19

YABU. Card is much more convenient. I don't want to have to faff around guessing how much money I need in cash for a day/night out and then have to worry about losing it.

Turquoisflutterby · 05/07/2023 21:19

100x more convenient than cash. YABU

and who is a conspiracy theorist now again?

The Arcades take cash.
The 2p machine is going strong
Hate car parks that don't take cash though
