Cashless everything is annoying and inconvenient

Went to London last weekend. A concert in Hyde Park. Nobody in food/drink stalls wanted to take cash. Is this a new normal?

Well yes but they always did have meta data. For 40 years supermarket's have ordered based on what went through the till and last year's sales that week etc.

TinyPurpleFishes · 05/07/2023 22:24

This thread just reminded me of something - I went to a concert recently and there was chaos in the foyer because everyone’s phones had been placed in Yondr pouches upon entry to the arena and so many people couldn’t pay for their food/drinks!

Mutabiliss · 05/07/2023 22:24

Love card only, rarely carry cash. It's so inconvenient. Why would I carry a heavy purse around with dirty coins, when I could just take my card wallet?

Boomboom22 · 05/07/2023 22:24

I mean automated ordering. I assume busineses have always done this even pre computers by hand. Be a bit stupid otherwise 🤣

brunettemic · 05/07/2023 22:27

I love it, I hate cash. Cashless is so much easier. I’m also crap with having bits of money around so if I needed say £6 cash that will cost me £10 because I’ll waste the other £4 of the £10 I have to get out. I don’t understand the inconvenience argument because surely having to find a cash point and get money out is less convenient than not having to do that…?!

I went to a Yondr concert and regretted not wearing my old watch as I didn't know the time for when it started

Where has this myth that dealing with cash is expensive come from? Its card transactions that take a percentage of the price. Cash is free? Banks just get richer from every small purchase you make

Cash isn't free. Banks charge businesses to pay in cash. There's also a much greater security risk of losing it, being stolen by employees, being robbed, it has to be either taken to the bank in someone's pocket (risky if thousands from a business) or collected by one of those vans (expensive).

Shoss · 05/07/2023 22:27

I used to pay for everything by card.

The push towards a cashless society bothers me though, and I want the option of paying by cash to remain open to those that want or need it. For the last few years, out of principle, I've paid cash for anything less than a couple of hundred pounds.

There's only one shop where I live that won't take cash and it consistently has more staff than customers.

Happyfluffball · 05/07/2023 22:27

Card only is more convenient than cash only .

ActDottie · 05/07/2023 22:28

It’s been the norm for ages now. I like it.

IBetGordonRamsayDoesntHaveTheseProblems · 05/07/2023 21:54

Nope.

It's expensive for me because

  • Santander charge 7% if you deposit over £1000 per month - when a minority of the transactions are cash I can recycle most of the cash within the business and avoid it, but if everyone paid me in cash it would be MUCH more expensive than only doing cards
  • I have to spend time going to the post office for change and deposits
  • there's the risk of theft - either by employees or the general public
  • we run at capacity a lot of the time - literally not stopping. With a card payment it takes a few taps and then I sort their order while they faff about with their card. Getting change takes a few seconds, which when we are targeting 30 seconds per customer really adds up.

For those who do food there's hygiene issues as well.

I do take cash but frequently think about going card only. Unaccompanied children are the only thing that really stops me.

Well I've learnt something today! Thanks Smile. I just asked dh and didn't realise we had a charge for putting cash in. We rarely get enough to go over which is why I didn't know, and only deal in whole numbers so don't need change other than fivers. We also don't have staff so theft isn't an issue. I much prefer when customers pay cash so we don't have to pay card fees but didn't realise we get cash fees after a certain amount anyway. A lot of our costs are paid in cash too.

That's not true though. In fact I had this conversation with a friend at the weekend. He was saying when we were young you'd get your spending money out on a Friday and then wonder where it had all gone on Sunday morning. Now we can see exactly where it went!

I find it's easier to budget with cash. On a card, you just tap away without physically seeing how much you have spent.

Visually seeing money and how much you have left makes me think not to spend as much.

The cynic in me says it’s because with cards all transactions are effectively declared, with cash you can “miss” some and pay less tax. I know that’s a massive generalisation but I’m sure many businesses do it.

You do need a lot of different credit cards though in case they don't work.

A lot? I have a credit card and a debit card. I use the credit card all along, but the debit card will see me through if there's a reason I can't use the debit card.

Banks charge to pay in cash.
business insurance costs higher if cash held
time to count and take to bank costs money
theft or loss of cash costs money

card payments usually work out cheaper than handling and banking cash

iPhone 11s aren’t even that “old” (says me using my 2.5 year old perfectly working iPhone 11 and missing the point of the thread).

JazbayGrapes · 05/07/2023 21:18

Why do you struggle - do you not have cards and only have cash (where from? Surely a bank?)

I just prefer cash. I do use card but i leave a limited amount on there in case its stolen and swiped.
I live in Bristol where totally cashless are still unpopular, at least my part of town.

So do I it's good to have both options

Mrsmch123 · 05/07/2023 22:38

I much prefer it tbh. Generally much quicker than people faffing around with money then waiting on change. Tap and leave😁

User106487665 · 05/07/2023 22:39

Why do people want cash to disappear if they use cards anyway, it doesn't affect them, it's just mean

That’s what I never understood. Use the method you prefer and leave the others to do the same 🤷‍♀️

Exactly.

I don't really understand how some people perceive businesses that are card only to be doing better than the ones that take both payments.
I think it is vital that both forms of payments are accepted. But I fear it is only a matter of time before that even card will be shunned in favour of phone apps.

JenniferBooth · 05/07/2023 22:42

Same reason as they did during Covid Their way or the high way. Its worrying how so many are into coercive control
