To the £19.95 each for a Sunday lunch is expensive?

Going to Newcastle for the weekend
I'm from a small town and here you can get a Sunday lunch for around £10
So obviously my shock at the menu for £19.95 each
So with two drinks around £60
I just think it's daylight robbery

£9.99 at my local and it's lush, £8.50 for a "small plate" which is still a massive portion = £19.95 is bloody expensive imho

bellalou1234 · 05/07/2023 17:55

Wylam brewery is lovely but that's probably about 23 as is branches

nocoolnamesleft · 05/07/2023 17:57

I'm up north. Sounds normal.

OldTinHat · 05/07/2023 17:58

I paid £40 for two bog standard fish n chips at a pub the other week - SE. Sounds like a good price for a Sunday lunch.

Teapleasebobb · 05/07/2023 18:09

I'm in Derbyshire and I wouldn't pay £19.95 each for a Sunday lunch!

TheLostNights · 05/07/2023 18:11

This is why we don't go out for Sunday lunch. Prices are ridiculous.

fetchacloth · 05/07/2023 18:28

I'd say those prices are about right, certainly around here (Midlands).
The last time I saw a £10 roast was about 15 years ago.

PinkStarAtNight · 05/07/2023 18:28

You've not said what type of place this is - fancy restaurant/pub or average chain pub type place?

I'm in WY and here if you go to an average pub I.e a chain, then you'll pay under £10 and the meal will be average. For a nicer, independent country pub I'd expect to pay more like £15-20 and it would all be fresh/you'd get a decent serving/would have all the trimmings etc

When you say that two drinks will make it £60, do you mean because you are in a couple? I wouldn't love it, bit wouldn't be surprised to pay £30 each in a couple for a 'naice' roast and a drink in a place with a lovely ambiance. But where I am we can definitely get one for £10 each that is still decent.

Are you restricted in where you go? Can't you search for a cheaper place?

surreygirl1987 · 05/07/2023 18:29

I think I must be the only person shocked by this... and I'm in the SE! I haven't had a roast in a pub for a few years though so am probably behind the times.

littlemousebigcheese · 05/07/2023 18:31

Christ, people competing to have the most expensive roast. Roasts are pretty cheap to make tbh; lots of veg and potatoes and a Yorkshire pudding. Pubs buy in good joints of meat from the butchers at good prices. I've had delicious roasts for £10 and reheated slop for £18, price isn't always an indicator of quality!

I'm in South Wales and don't know where I would find Sunday lunch for £10 !!!

Same!

Lapland123 · 05/07/2023 18:33

It’s crazy how a main meal in a restaurant costs almost twice as much as a year ago. We just go out half as often. It’s not worth it

the80sweregreat · 05/07/2023 18:47

I saw a menu today , 12 pounds for an ' English ' breakfast! It's nearly four pounds for a fancy coffee in some places too.
I was astonished, although not really surprised
People will vote with their feet and places may shut down. I understand why the prices are high , but if you have a choice most people won't bother and cook it and make it at home instead.

In this context it pretty much does 😂

LidlOrAldi · 05/07/2023 18:54

I think I'll pass on that!!

Diyextension · 05/07/2023 18:55

Typical on here , just because someone can get the same thing cheaper then it’s got to be worse ( slopp ). 🙄

APurpleSquirrel · 05/07/2023 18:57

Local pub to me in SW does a carvery in three different sizes - Small (one choice of meat) £8.50; Medium (two choices of meat) £10.50 & Large (all three meats) £12.50.
All freshly cooked really good food & can choose what you want & can fit on the plate in terms of sides.

redgirl1 · 05/07/2023 18:59

A roast round my way would be £20 ish but I wouldn’t be spending £20 per drink. Even a glass of champagne would be less than that.

bonfirebash · 05/07/2023 19:00

This is a "nice" one near me, £17.50 and local meat

@sinkorswimss I love Redcar... my paternal family are from staithes and I travel eight hours four times a year to visit :)

Dontrecogniseme · 05/07/2023 19:08

You have shared a menu of a pub, not a nice gastropub but a typical pub. You can't compare the price of somewhere like that to an actual restaurant in Newcastle. It's somewhere I wouldn't drink, never mind eat. And yes I have name changed and I know Redcar well

Oblahbla · 05/07/2023 19:08

NE too OP and there are 3 very good pubs round here where you can get a stonking Sunday lunch for between £12 and £14 (one's a carvery). We notice a huge jump in eating out prices whenever we venture away from home.....

Cautionsharpblade · 05/07/2023 20:01

The best Sunday roast in Newcastle is at the Tanners Arms at the top of the Ouseburn. I think it’s £12.95. You’ll need to book.
