To the £19.95 each for a Sunday lunch is expensive?

sinkorswimss · 05/07/2023 13:57

Going to Newcastle for the weekend
I'm from a small town and here you can get a Sunday lunch for around £10
So obviously my shock at the menu for £19.95 each
So with two drinks around £60
I just think it's daylight robbery

Nice pub carvery near us is £10 . All freshly cooked and very nice.

musixa · 05/07/2023 16:16

I don't think it's outrageous, but I don't tend to go out for Sunday lunch as it's relatively straightforward to cook one at home. I prefer to go out to eat things I couldn't cook without lots of faffing and different ingredients rather than meat & two veg meals.

Completely normal where I am (SE).

This

Lordofmyflies · 05/07/2023 16:17

I'm in Cornwall - pub Sunday Carvery is about £20. Won't get anything for under £17 which is half decent. Eating out is pricey. We went out as a group of 4 for Sunday roast on Father's Day. 4 Roasts and soft drinks was £100 at our local pub.

Harlechchick · 05/07/2023 16:19

I feel that any pub offering 'mushy peas' as an optional side dish to a Sunday Roast is likely to be the sort of pub which serves pre-prepared (maybe even frozen) vegetables.
Obviously a lot of people are more than happy with this (even if they're under the impression that it's fresh! 😉). So it makes it available at a lower price, to include those with a little less disposable income who still fancy a Sunday lunch out.

gogomoto · 05/07/2023 16:23

It's £12-18 a head here, £5 a pint typically. Not a cheap area

Tardigraded · 05/07/2023 16:23

Absolute bargain in London.

Lds1 · 05/07/2023 16:25

If you go to Martha's you can have 2 Sunday dinners for £14, not been for a long time so not sure if they're still good.

TellingBone · 05/07/2023 16:27

You need to check out Eddy Eats OP. 😏

Caroparo52 · 05/07/2023 16:27

Lucky you. Prices in SW are £17..00 for main minimum, and its not that amazing.
£24.00 for 2 courses.
Just shot up since Easter.
Home cooked always tastier.... and there's leftovers

CapEBarra · 05/07/2023 16:27

Blimey, £10 is cheap. That would barely get you a cooked breakfast at the local greasy spoon in the south east. In my local it’s usually about £16-£22 for a main course Sunday lunch.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 05/07/2023 16:28

I'm in SE and just looked up a very nice pub where sometimes get a Sunday roast lunch, it ranges between £13.49 - £16.49 (7 hour slow cooked rib of beef). Don't think I've ever paid £20 for a Sunday lunch.

Sadly we don’t get your Southern wages.
Just realised I get much less than the average wage, I’m only just above minimum, it’s galling.
I am educated, work full time, but that’s all that appears to be advertised.

Newsflash.

I'm not southern and don't live in the South.

PigletJohn · 05/07/2023 16:32

Where I live (South Coast) there are a lot of older people, and the pubs and restaurants winch up their prices at weekends. There is a lot of demand for Sunday roasts. Price is similar. Pudding extra.

Fairislefandango · 05/07/2023 16:32

Is there such a thing as a nice pub roast at ANY price point?

Yes, if you go to pubs which serve really good restaurant-standard food, their roasts are usually also really good imo. As a previous poster said, we all have different definitions of 'nice'. You get what you pay for (if you're lucky). I don't see the point of going out for a meal unless it's at least as good as what you'd make at home, and dh makes a mean roast!

BCBird · 05/07/2023 16:34

I'm.in Midlands. Haven't been out much recently. On the odd occasion I eat out I'm.shocked at the price hikes😥

MrsClatterbuck · 05/07/2023 16:39

On Sunday we paid £37.50 for two at a carvery. That included 2 sparkling waters with lime and a pot of coffee. also includes homemade shortbread and they never seem to charge for the coffee Plus they serve the meat but you help yourself to potatoes veg and either gravy or pepper sauce. We had each two slices of thick cut roast beef.

At another place we paid £42 for 2 carvery meals plus 2 sparking water and lime and 2 Americanos. Though no self service.

Gymtastic · 05/07/2023 16:40

From the link the pp posted it’s a traditional Irish bar type which is part of a small hotel, it’s very basic old style pub . Looks like a lot of fun but I don’t think the op is being fair in trying to compare it to a meal in Newcastle cente.

It certainly is especially when it’s all frozen & tasteless. I wonder what people eat to enjoy this sort of food.

BodegaSushi · 05/07/2023 16:43

Gymtastic · 05/07/2023 14:28

Generally if they need to put pics of the food on the menu it’s a lower end place.

omg the lengths people will go to to be snobby are batshit

Give over, it’s true and it doesn’t mean I don’t eat in those places, or it’s snobby, it’s just a fact, the lower end put pics of food on the actual menu, the others don’t. It’s not snobby to state a fact. How over sensitive.

and a pp posted a link to thr place, as said, it looks a lot of fun but it is an Irish type pub with typical pub food. That’s not snobby it’s just fact,

dazzlingdeborahrose · 05/07/2023 16:53

That seems about average for the city centre to be honest. It's prime real estate with the associated higher rents and rates. You could travel a wee bit further out of the city centre. Babuchos is nice though. You could try The Old George or The Bridge Tavern. Still central. More traditional. Might be a bit less.

@sinkorswimss i can imagine the shock! Where do you live?! The past?

I need to go

Love this

Oblomov23 · 05/07/2023 16:56

Seems too expensive to me. I can't see how they justify that price.

dazzlingdeborahrose · 05/07/2023 16:57

Just had a look at The City Tavern just off Northumberland Street. Sunday lunch is £15. Now got a craving for lunch st the city tavern...
