To the £19.95 each for a Sunday lunch is expensive?

Going to Newcastle for the weekend
I'm from a small town and here you can get a Sunday lunch for around £10
So obviously my shock at the menu for £19.95 each
So with two drinks around £60
I just think it's daylight robbery

£10 for a roast? Where are you from? 2009?

Flickersy · 05/07/2023 14:07

When I hear about a £10 Sunday roast all I can wonder about is how poorly they're paying their staff, because you're not going to make much money otherwise. This is assuming you're actually cooking it and not bulk buying frozen prepared vegetables to microwave and getting your gravy from own-brand Bisto granules.

Nanna50 · 05/07/2023 14:07

You can get a good roast dinner for £15 in Newcastle not sure about £10 though.

Mangogogogo · 05/07/2023 14:08

I’m just across the border from you op and you can get a nice fresh pub lunch for a tenner here too, but average ranges £10-16. I don’t think people understand what it’s like living in small towns in the north east!

JMSA · 05/07/2023 14:08

Standard, unless it was maybe a Toby Carvery.

JaneSeeMore · 05/07/2023 14:09

I’d question the quality of the ingredients and the wages for the workers if they are only charging £10. I don’t think I could even make a restaurant-worthy roast dinner for a tenner.

BamBamBambi · 05/07/2023 14:10

I wouldn’t want to eat the slop on a roast if it’s a tenner. Even TOby charges more then that.

anywhere from £18-£23 is standard in the nice pubs I go to.

Last time I checked the north east isn't exempt from the minimum wage, and doesn't get a discount on utilities or catering supplies.

So where is the profit margin coming from?

sinkorswimss · 05/07/2023 14:15

@Nanna50 do you recommend anywhere ? We have booked babucho -which is two courses for £20

pimplebum · 05/07/2023 14:18

Please tell us we're this pub is we all need to visit

EscapeRoomToTheSun · 05/07/2023 14:18

Aye but this will be made with meat pet, not whatever they've found in the ally behind the pub.

Hollyppp · 05/07/2023 14:18

Very very normal round here (south london) I probs wouldn’t eat at somewhere where it’s less than £15 as likely not nice food

Coral569 · 05/07/2023 14:20

I'm south west and I'd say £10 is cheap and cheerful, £15 is standard/high, but I don't think I've ever seen a roast dinner hit the £20 mark. I think that's very expensive and I'd expect a very big, fancy meal for that price.

sinkorswimss · 05/07/2023 14:21

Not sure if I'm allowed to post the name so I've hid the name and just showing prices etc

You can get a lot of house for your money in Redcar.... tempting.

WhimHoff · 05/07/2023 14:21

Are you kidding? Anything under £50 a head is long gone these days.

PuttingDownRoots · 05/07/2023 14:22

Its £12 at our Rugby club, platters of meat and veg served to your table and boxes to take the leftovers home.

I live in the south west.

Go to the nice country pubs and the roasts are always £20+

They are not big or fancy. Just decent food.

underneaththeash · 05/07/2023 14:23

Dread to think what the meat is like for £10/head.
Our local pub is £25 for adult roast.

You can tell by the menu that is not what I would class as a nice pub.

That’s Toby Standard.
