To feel angry at celebrating the NHS

The NHS is falling apart and today people are all full of glee at the NHS yippee 75 years today, it’s making me so angry!!!!!!!!!
My family member has been diagnosed with cancer, 2 months down the line and has had no treatment and terrible delays for tests…..still yet to see an oncologist. 2 months!!!!!!!!! Family member only has pain management because us family have begged and fought to get it. It is an utter disgrace and I had no idea how bad things were until this awful diagnosis in our own family.
We are not alone / it hasn’t been a mistake or being lost in the system by accident! Record high cancer patient delays - this is what so many people are facing. I am in utter disbelief!
I won’t be celebrating today.

Let’s rephrase that, then, the Tories would like to.

Why on earth would the Tories want the US political system, FPTP has served them pretty well recently?

eggsbenedict23 · 05/07/2023 12:14

You ask an American about "socialised medicine" and the first thing they'd point to would be the failures of the NHS.

We forget how the USA leads the world in innovation for medical technology

It’s so true my ex-husband worked for an American Pharma Co and the research budget was out of this world.

eggsbenedict23 · 05/07/2023 12:17

Think about the COVID vaccines as well. Pfizer was more effective. Astrazeneca caused (some) blood clots.
Moderna was better than astrazeneca as well

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 05/07/2023 12:17

I think that because we speak (roughly) the same language as the US and because of the so-called 'special relationship', people think we're like the US in many areas whereas I think actually we have a lot more in common with other countries, including EU ones.

ButImNotOldEnough · 05/07/2023 12:17

@Sweetpeasaremadeforbees Anyone with an eye on politics, the economic shifts appearing over the last 2 decades (though it has ramped up a lot in the last decade) or even just casually browsing the web reading articles on lifestyle will show you how similar we are getting.

I’m not suggesting that we’ll end up as gun wielding mob screaming for the eradication of Womens rights (though if you visit Scotland you may have a different opinion!), but we are certainly far more into capitalism than the majority of the EU and our political similarities are rather stark.

What about Australia and Canada as comparisons? Australia seems to be recruiting a lot of our doctors so they must be doing something right. It's not just the weather that's attractive Smile

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 05/07/2023 12:22

I disagree, I don't think the UK (in my lifetime) would ever vote for a Trump or to remove gun laws or even to ban abortion. And UK women are fighting back on the gender issue. All (well most) countries have become more capitalist, they have to because of globalisation.

Completely agree, it's annoying that the US is ALWAYS brought into the argument.

Wasn't there an NHS trust that had failed on maternal care and had many preventable deaths (of babies)

There are quite a few and there will be more coming to light

Strawberrypicnic · 05/07/2023 12:39

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 05/07/2023 12:01

But you wouldn’t have to pay American bills would you? Why is the USA comparison constantly wheeled out when the majority of civilised countries have an insurance model and don’t have members of the public amputating their own limbs?

God knows but I too find it really tedious and it's a distraction - always bringing the USA into the argument means things will never change.

I have always thought the US system is brought up so often because it is clear that that is the one the Tories are most keen to replicate. That's why people cling so hard to the NHS too. Under the current government, we cannot trust that any move away from the NHS model would be fair, affordable, well thought out, or designed to benefit more than a small handful of very rich people.

Sweetashunni · 05/07/2023 12:40

So why haven’t they actually done it? They’ve had 15 years in power and maybe 1 or 2 left, plus a convenient pandemic.

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 05/07/2023 12:46

I think the Tories know that if they moved over to a US style system it would be the end for them. But the last Labour government poured money into the NHS and it's still shit and still paying those PFI bills. I honestly don't know how anything will ever change with any of the parties. I envy people who think that Labour have the answer, I wish it were that simple. I think all parties are too scared to even vaguely examine the issues.

eggsbenedict23 · 05/07/2023 12:55

I've read that the NHS was good under new Labour? Then again all the extra funding for it bankrupted it due to pfi debt.

Sweetashunni · 05/07/2023 12:58

Labour simply emptied the account then legged it. To be good it has to be sustainable

Wizzbangfizz · 05/07/2023 12:59

There is no cause for celebration in my opinion. The NHS is a badly run disaster of bureaucratic mess and I hold no hope for it and it is one of the main reasons I’m leaving this country for good. My dads care up until end of life was shocking and I’ll not have my children witness that with me.

eggsbenedict23 · 05/07/2023 13:00

Idk if this was answered previously but do NHS staff see themselves as heros and whatnot

Quveas · 05/07/2023 13:01

NoChanceYouMetalBastard · 05/07/2023 08:46

Agreed. The ridiculous NHS worship that started during the pandemic continues.

Rubbish. The NHS is, and has been since its inception, one of the crowning achievements of the UK in the world, and a model that has been copied or envied by other countries. Despite the lack of resources it continues to provide services far beyond what many other countries offer their citizens. What is needed to to stop clapping for it and start fighting for it. The rot set in with inadequate investment long before the pandemic - all the pandemic did was demonstrate how far behind it had fallen.

Lmao

Yes this is my memory of it. Waiting lists were lower and there were new hospitals but a hell of a lot of money was spent which meant we then got austerity from the Tories.

What shall we do to fight for it?

Which countries have copied it?

Happyfluffball · 05/07/2023 13:05

The NHS has failed us in every way. It deserves no worship or celebration. It needs to be replaced with something better.

🙈
I do admire the patriotism though

I think Danny Boyle is on here!
