To ask why people are so against giving up meat?

NewCracker · 04/07/2023 21:12

Just that really, why are people so against giving up meat?
Without a doubt we know it's better for the environment, we know it's better for our health, we know it's better for animal welfare and it's actually quite expensive. But still as soon as you mention to the greater public about cutting their meat consumption, they get defensive and almost offended.
Would you ever consider giving it up, if you do consume it now? If not, why not?
I'm expecting some hate, this is MN after all, but I am genuinely just curious. Not trying to rattle feathers.

No know this is not true, right? You've just fallen for the the fluffy, feel-good vegan bullshit that's always spouted.

Intensively produced meat isn't great. Well produced meat, raised well, slaughtered ethically, not transported far, and butchered well is wonderful.

FancyFanny · 04/07/2023 22:09

I don't believe it's better for your health. Humans are omnivores and eating meat is is a natural thing to do. Our bodies are not genetically programmed to live on veg alone. Yes, a diet high in veg is good, but diet devoid of animal protein is not natural.

ArseMenagerie · 04/07/2023 22:10

It’s been calculated many many times that eating air freighted avocado is still better for the planet than meat. Although eating seasonal local veg is best, an avocado is better than a beef sandwich EVEN IF THE BEEF IS LOCAL. It’s about the energy water and land needed to rear and feed an animal.

eat meat all you like but it’s simply wrong to try to argue that it’s worse to eat avocados

How bad for the planet are imported fruit and veg?

How can it possibly be better for animal welfare when these animals need no longer exist?

It's Ruffle feathers, not Rattle.

Not existing is better than getting chopped for someone's meal. What would you prefer for yourself not existing or being someone's meal?

BansheeofInisherin · 04/07/2023 22:10

I just want to go on one veggie thread where nobody tells anyone what they should be eating, but equally no one brings up avocados😀Veggies really don't eat avocados all day. It's such a straw man.

I also would be happy never to hear the words fake meat again, but more people must be eating that, given supermarket aisles.

Fernbreeze · 04/07/2023 22:10

When food crops do no harm to the environment, stop fragmentation, exclusion, pollution, harmful spraying, exclusion of natural fauna, control of perceived pest species and becomes 100% ecologically friendly I will stop eating meat until then your are harming the environment by just living on earth like the rest of us.

So take your superiority and stick it some where dark.

Cosycover · 04/07/2023 22:11

Because steak.

Diddykong · 04/07/2023 22:11

My DC are allergic to dairy eggs and legumes (including soya) so we'd be dead in a week

Well sure I guess the best thing we can do is not breed and maybe start bumping people off but I’m not into eugenics and I’m not Thanos so as an easy answer to ‘what can we do about climate change?’ I’d say giving up meat is within reach for most of us.

I didn't mention eugenics. And it's pretty disgusting you would mention it to imply that my post was in support of it. If you knew anything about eugenicists you would know they want population expansion (just of their design). So clearly not what I was suggesting.

And really, not having children is within easy reach for most of us. It's just humans are quite selfish and do want they want.

FancyFanny · 04/07/2023 22:11

And being a vegan is even more remote from our natural requirements.

WandaWonder · 04/07/2023 22:11

Because my doctor told me I need to eat more red meat, plus I enjoy eating same way as people who make other choices like lecturing others on what they should and should not be doing

ArseMenagerie · 04/07/2023 22:12

Unclench. It was a joke.

MrsApplepants · 04/07/2023 22:12

I like meat. Don’t really care what anyone else thinks

Rightnowstraightaway · 04/07/2023 22:12

I have cut down and have a lot of veggie recipes I like. I also buy less-but-higher-quality meat, or meat that is reduced to clear. That's my compromise for cost and environment as I'm not willing to give up completely. Try and eat seasonally and locally.

Firstly, I was a vegetarian for a while but I felt exhausted. I am borderline anaemic most of the time and feel much better eating meat. Secondly, I like it. Thirdly, my DH wouldn't be willing to be completely veggie and I don't want to cook multiple things each day or rely on UPFs or ready meals. Lastly, I'm trying to cut down on UPFs and don't want to use meat substitutes.

FancyFanny · 04/07/2023 22:13

Eating meat is not the problem- it's the fact that there are far too many humans on the planet.

I'm not fussed either way,
I can enjoy a good salad platter, as much as a good meat platter.

Oh you interviewed all the chickens, cattle, pigs and sheep did you?

Got some great feedback on existentialism and their worldview?

Nah, thought not.

FWIW I have absolutely no problem whatsoever in my meat being consumed when I'm dead.
Of course I won't be raised to slaughter because as a human I'm at the top of the food chain pretty much.

Do you object to dolphins, sharks, seals, lions, tigers, piranha fish etc etc at the top of their food chains?

A shit, unfunny joke that didn't come over as a joke. Given the history of eugenics it's not really something to joke about or imply that other people support when they've said nothing to suggest it.

I eat dairy, lentils and eggs. I don't actually see how cooking veggies is any more difficult than cooking meat. Millions of recipes online. So either way UPFs are a possibility for some.

🤦🏻‍♀️ I don’t believe anyone is this stupid. Then again.....

Purplefoalfoot · 04/07/2023 22:24

I don’t care how ‘nice’ something tastes I wouldn’t kill an animal just to have a nice tasting meal. Utterly bizarre that people think this is okay.

Also, yes I would rather farm animals go extinct than continue to be bred, tortured and killed so people can enjoy their dinner a bit more.

This is a mental thread.

Icannoteven · 04/07/2023 22:25

This, @NewCracker, is why you don't start threads about giving up eating meat on MN 😉

Poetnojo · 04/07/2023 22:25

Because its the main component of a proper human diet.
