To ask why people are so against giving up meat?

Just that really, why are people so against giving up meat?
Without a doubt we know it's better for the environment, we know it's better for our health, we know it's better for animal welfare and it's actually quite expensive. But still as soon as you mention to the greater public about cutting their meat consumption, they get defensive and almost offended.
Would you ever consider giving it up, if you do consume it now? If not, why not?
I'm expecting some hate, this is MN after all, but I am genuinely just curious. Not trying to rattle feathers.

Because it’s delicious. Also I don’t get the better for animal welfare argument- if people give up meat all those fields of lovely sheep, cows and other animals will be empty and just crops. Those animals won’t have a life at all.

for me it’s important that we pay a proper price for meat, chose local options and where possible shop where the supply chain is transparent but I love animals and I love seeing them in the countryside- if we all become vegetarian that will end

I'm sorry but if your health suffered in just 'a few months' you must have had an underlying health condition. I've been vegan for over 5 years and had nothing but health benefits. This is verging on scaremongering imo.

Agreed. The poster either has underlying health issues or it’s made up to suit a meat eating agenda whilst pretending to have been vegan. Either way, not the reality of a healthy vegan diet.

One of my children was a poor eater as a toddler. She was virtually a vegan as she hated all meat, cows milk, yogurts, eggs etc. She still never got ill and that was a developing child and it went on a lot longer than a few months!

I’ve been vegan for over 20 years and I’ve always been healthy. I was borderline anaemia in one my pregnancies, not in the others, but eating a little more iron sorted it.

I haven't made anything up.

According to my nutritionist, only about 20% of people can thrive on a vegan diet, due to genetics. I'm not one of them. I wish I was. I'm not the biggest fan of meat, eggs or dairy. I never have been. Beef mince used to make me gag as a child. I'm not here to convince anyone of anything.

But the question was asked, and I answered it. I'm not picking on anyone else for their food choices, interesting that more than one person thinks I'm lying because what I am eating in order to thrive doesn't suit their message.

KirstenBlest · 05/07/2023 09:55

@Dinosauratemydaffodils I used to eat a lot more vegetarian food
What exactly is 'vegetarian food'?
I think that omnivores think that vegetarians only eat things like mushroom risotto or beetroot and goat's cheese tartlets or something.

You don't get people talking about 'omnivore food'

I love animals and seeing them in the fields is lovely for me. But I cant love animals and have them killed for my sandwiches so I would take not seeing them in the fields if it means they don’t get bred into the world to be fattened & slaughtered.

You cannot both love animals and eat meat. This is cognitive dissonance.

itsmellslikepopcarn · 05/07/2023 09:59

I‘m vegan and whilst I find it upsetting that people eat meat, I don’t actively try to convince anyone to do otherwise. That being said, for the love of god please educate yourselves! The amount of people who still bang on about soya being bad for the environment when 90% of soya production is fed to livestock.

And everyone would be up in arms if we bred dogs purely for food, pigs have the same if not greater intelligence than dogs; they can learn tricks, they play, they bond with other pigs, yet most of you are alright sending them off to a gas chamber to be killed for sausages and bacon. I wonder if they had a say they’d be happy with their little bit of life they get or whether they’d rather just not exist in the first place.

You're right, I was being lazy. However given I was talking about eating out at that point, I think it's fairly obvious what I meant. Items on menus labelled vegetarian.

olivehaters · 05/07/2023 10:06

I wonder how vegetarians feel about other animals eating meat? I understand the argument from an environmental point of view. But those that argue you cant love animals if you eat meat are deluded.

KarmaStar · 05/07/2023 10:10

Because they don't love animals more than their own stomachs and greed.
Because they don't care about the huge detrimental affect it is having on the planet.
Because they don't hear the screams of terror.
Basically down to selfishness and utter greed.
Hundreds of thousands are healthy living a plant based diet.
None of them have rotting meat in their guts for weeks.

And stuff like foie grois should be BANNED

I can’t see how ANYONE could argue otherwise

well done 🤔

but I will still be eating meat

Yellowdays · 05/07/2023 10:14

I think it has a certain amount to do with habit, what people are taught to cook, and the ease of cooking traditional dishes-put on meat or fish, steam/boil veg or salad, boil potatoes or whatever carb. Or chuck it all in a slow cooker or casserole.

People don't have time to think about it after work, and these dishes are easy.

IAmSalmaFuckingHayek · 05/07/2023 10:15

Rotting meat in guts for weeks? Do you know how the digestive system works? 😂

MasterBeth · 05/07/2023 10:16

I happily eat meat but it makes me laugh to see livestock famers say how they are great advocates of animal welfare because of how they breed and slaughter so many of them.

Scrummage · 05/07/2023 10:17

I’m an omnivore but I don’t understand why other omnivores get so upset and defensive when the subject of giving up meat or dairy comes up.

There’s the meme about vegans telling you they’re vegan, but in my experience it’s fellow omnivores that pester the veggie at the table and try to ‘prove them wrong’.

When you freak out at someone promoting veganism, it makes it look like, deep down, you suspect they’re right.

Fernbreeze · 05/07/2023 10:18

I know this will blow vegans minds but here goes, I'm a predator its in my design.

When humans develop eyes in the side of their skull I`ll eat your veggies 👌

Makemyday99 · 05/07/2023 10:19

Meat tastes so much better than any vegetable I’ve eaten, meat is delicious & for that reason I will never give it up

@Fernbreeze

i think we have evolved a bit from that

try and eat a few veggies - they’re good for you!

Have we evolved, evolution on a physical scale or just in your woke mind?

loislovesstewie · 05/07/2023 10:22

Could any vegan tell me what they think will happen to all the farm animals if the whole population became vegan ?{ Unlikely I know, but indulge me}

Superdupes · 05/07/2023 10:23

The problem isn't humans eating meat - any more than it is any other animal eating meat. The problem is there are too many humans and so huge amounts of meat are required to feed them all.

Reducing the world population significantly would end pretty much every environmental problem that exists so surely that is a much better solution?

Stalking the super market aisles, keeping low in the long grass in case a steak sees you from it's side mounted eye

Scrummage · 05/07/2023 10:24

Hey @loislovesstewie I’m not a vegan but I imagine if everyone became vegan then all the farm animals would die as farmers wouldn’t have an incentive to breed any more. Is that right? What’s the problem with that?

LuckySantangelo35 · 05/07/2023 10:24

@Fernbreeze

yes we have.

and there is simply no place for some things in a civilised society such as veal and foie grois

I eat meat but the logic in this "but we must maintain them so they can be killed" is nonsense
