To ask why people are so against giving up meat?

Just that really, why are people so against giving up meat?
Without a doubt we know it's better for the environment, we know it's better for our health, we know it's better for animal welfare and it's actually quite expensive. But still as soon as you mention to the greater public about cutting their meat consumption, they get defensive and almost offended.
Would you ever consider giving it up, if you do consume it now? If not, why not?
I'm expecting some hate, this is MN after all, but I am genuinely just curious. Not trying to rattle feathers.

Soya beans are produced to feed livestock. Amazon rainforest are cut down to grow them. Not for human consumption but factory farmed animals.

Actually, a lot of intensive arable farming such as soy is more devastating for the environment than intensive meat production. There's also the issue of human rights abuses which occur in some parts of the world.

The simple fact is that mass food production is unsustainable and the world's population too large. People advocating vegetarianism or veganism for environmental reasons often don't realise that it won't solve the underlying issues.

You quite deliberately missed out the other 27 million + hectares for palm oil for bio fuels and numerous house hold products.

PhoenixIsFlying · 04/07/2023 23:55

I am a massive foodie, a vegan diet is far from limiting.

HadalyEve · 04/07/2023 23:55

We arent the only animals to farm and eat other animals btw.
Ants farm aphids. Should Ants be going vegan too?

PhoenixIsFlying · 04/07/2023 23:56

Fernbreeze , again you sneer but I didn't deliberately miss that out. I was just concentrating on topic.

MysteryBelle · 04/07/2023 23:56

I’ve never liked meat. So I don’t eat it. I have the right to eat or not eat whichever food groups I want and so does everyone else.

My son has type 1 diabetes. The kind children get through no fault of their own.

He needs foods that are no and low carb to live. Meat and cheese have no carbs. He happens to naturally like meat more than any other food group. There are other types of foods and food groups he simply doesn’t like. Vegetables generally have low carbs and he likes vegetables but if he couldn’t have meat because you wanted to be a little dictator, his health would be destroyed.

You regurgitate the twisted agendas of the powerful left. Agendas that they slap with noble sounding labels and talking points in order to make money for themselves and they recruit foolish people to push them down everyone else’s throats.

Well you could try and persuade them but I think the language barrier might get in the way.
Are you really comparing your choices with those of an ant?

Add harlequin shrimp to that too quite fascinating and extremely brutal a tail of capture imprisonment, torture, force feeding and being eaten alive.

May be we should ban them from the ocean?

speluncean · 04/07/2023 23:59

People who get type 2 diabetes don't all get it through a "fault" of their own.

Malarandras · 05/07/2023 00:00

All the things you claim to be known about meat are not supported by robust evidence bases.

And last I checked this is still a free country. I can eat what I like. As li g as that is the case I will continue eating what I like. No explanation required.

How stupid can a person be? And you are an example of one of these clever humans at the top of the food chain. 🤦🏼‍♀️ I don’t think you as an individual would have made it to the top with your brain.

PhoenixIsFlying · 05/07/2023 00:01

MysteryBelle

Who is pushing anything down anyone's throat.
My ex had type 1 diabetes and was advised a Mediterranean diet and welcomed my vegan cooking.
My daughter has autism , her food choices are limited. I do not push a vegan diet on her at all. She is 13 now and deciding for herself she wants less meat in her diet.
I want her to make that choice not me.
Documenting my experience of being vegan is certainly not pushing it down people's throats.

Usually when some one resorts to insulting others they have already lost the argument.

Yes, because we are not superior to even the ants. We ended up where we are in the food chain and ecosystem through millions of years of evolution. It would be planet destroying to think we are separate, above or outside the ecosystem.

PhoenixIsFlying · 05/07/2023 00:03

Yes and the insults are generally coming from the non vegans

MeAndZee · 05/07/2023 00:04

When someone is comparing humans to ants to make an argument for eating meat, Trudy me, they’ve definitely lost. It’s thick af.

Ah, we see here an example that it is not meat eaters that are defensive and emotional.

Winning me over with logic and science, I see.

You do realise ants are essential to the ecosystem and fulfil many important roles that support the very existence and survival of humans yes?

Because if you were to dismiss that, that yet it would make some one thick af as you put it.

MeAndZee · 05/07/2023 00:08

Actually, I do eat meat. I just think the ant argument was ridiculous.

vodkaredbullgirl · 05/07/2023 00:08

Nothing wrong with eating meat, nothing wrong being vegetarian or vegan. We all different.

BlinkAndYouMissedMe · 05/07/2023 00:10

@Fernbreeze What figures/stats/proof do you want?
Would anything make you change your mind about eating meat? Do you know everything there is to know about veganism and its benefits?

Ants do not have the capacity to make decisions as we do. If you can’t see how humans and ants are not comparable in how they live then I’m not really sure what to say.
