To ask if anyone else feels like the covid era is a bad dream

Whenever I think of 2020 or 2021 it just doesn’t feel real at all. The lockdowns for months on end, the clapping for the NHS, the track and trace system, entire school years being sent home because a single case was discovered, panic buying, people developing intricate methods of sanitising their shopping, public shaming of rule breakers, religious holidays being stopped at very short notice. It’s all so bizarre to think of that this was in our country so recently and, really, there’s nothing to stop any of it happening again. In so many ways it just feels like a different world, my DS who had his GCSE’s cancelled is about to go off to uni (if he gets the grades 🤞) and my then little year 7 DD is doing her own GCSE’s next year. I guess my Aibu is to ask if anyone else feels so totally disconnected from that era to the extent it’s all like a bad dream?

It's funny the medical staff who worked on covid wards during the pandemic don't agree with you

Have you spoken to every single one of them? Have you heard of NHS100K

JenniferBooth · 04/07/2023 16:03

@SunnyEgg we talked about it on the AD threads in Chat

The fact is and Chris Whitty did say this all along for MOST people Covid is a mild illness. Now people have varying definitions of what ‘mild’ is. But it broadly means you can manage it at home without being hospitalised. The problem was that because we had no immunity then huge amounts of people were infected at the same time.

That made it appear more serious an illness than it was (for most). We knew very quickly that age was a factor in how serious this became.

The fact is, if the whole population of the world all got flu over a short period
of time, the death rate would be horrific. Ditto chicken pox, glandular fever. . People do die from flu and chicken pox. But you need to look at the case fatality rate to really see whether it is a mild illness for most or not. People can be ill for a good year after glandular fever. My most serious illness (and I’ve had Covid 3 times) was a nasty flu that left me weak for a good 6 months.

If someone close to you died, or if we heard about young people dying then this altered out perception of how serious Covid was for most people.

If you had, they would have had stories to tell you. It won't be long until people deny the very existence of covid, we know that , but try as you might, you can't rewrite history (at least not just yet).

JenniferBooth · 04/07/2023 16:05

. And i cant help noticing that the concern about some of us living in "hovels" have not yet developed into a campaign about people being allowed to live in bigger homes where they can self isolate more easily. e,g the bedroom tax still stands. Its funny how certain people dont want to follow up their faux concern with more room for SH tenants to self isolate. We could start with a new campaign to end bedroom tax for good. I wonder how many of the middle class who loved lockdown but denigrate SH tenants would put their money where their mouths are for this!!!

Do you mean the harm to dc?

Yes I think quite a few did. Which many hurled abuse over.

JenniferBooth · 04/07/2023 16:08

@SunnyEgg Yep they had A WHOLE FUCKING BOARD. all we had was some threads in Chat and they still had to come on there and make nasty comments

JenniferBooth · 04/07/2023 16:09

From what i can see of the enquiry so far the only thing being denied is lockdown damage.

WarmBeerAndSandwiches · 04/07/2023 16:11

Where on earth do you all live where people were so awful to one another? I don't remember it like that at all. Where I was it was hard because you were cut off from people but no one reported one another. Most people followed the rules anyway and people looked out for each other generally. You got some jobsworths but most people were decent. I live in a small town in the north but the local city seemed much the same - I have many friends there who had a similar experience to me.

Watch movie died suddenly on rumble

Yes, and also read The Real Anthony Fauci, which shows the arrogant liar for what he is, a rich businessman firmly stuffed in the pockets of big pharma with a sociopathic disregard for what he's actually been in post to promote for the last 50 years - public health.

exactly, remember they came to the miraculous conclusion there was no mental health crisis caused by the lockdowns?

I must have dreamed becoming suicidal…

The inquiry suffers from the same flaws that existed to start with.

Next to the stand is the person accountable for young people during the pandemic..

Oh hang on who’s that then?

Next is the person who is responsible for damage to mh

and so on

We’re going to have a bloody inquiry into the inquiry when we do it all over again because the system is not balanced.

ILookAtTheFloor · 04/07/2023 16:16

It was an awful time and it changed me as a person- it's made me far more cynical, sceptical and completely destroyed my trust in institutions I valued, particularly the BBC and to a lesser extent the NHS as well.

The use of fear and shutting down any reasoned debate was despicable.

JenniferBooth · 04/07/2023 16:16

Well @TheWalrusdidbeseech Someone has already tried rewriting history. A poster tried to get the AD threads deleted NOT AT THE TIME BUT THREE YEARS ON. those threads where we were raising concerns that have now come to fruition. Coincidentally this was at the same time that the enquiry started. Delete those and then many could say "look how supportive MN was of the restrictions Which would be much easier to say both here and the enquiry if those threads disappeared.

There does seem to be a sense of collective amnesia around what was, for many, a traumatic time.

It's not the first time this phenomena has happened, by any stretch of the imagination
https://academic.oup.com/book/27295/chapter-abstract/196949846?redirectedFrom=fulltext

The trauma of WW2 often seemed to be reframed around happy memories of community, blitz spirit and digging for victory - when the reality was so frequently sudden death, your home being destroyed, and food shortages. My grandmother was so traumatised by being a young adult during the war that she never spoke of it; she was a war widow but never wore a poppy.

I can see the same happening with the loudest voices coming from those who experienced lockdown in terms of furlough, time off and banana bread, not bereavement or (as happened to me) being banned from working but not being eligible for any financial help whatsoever.

My grandmother was similar. She did talk of it but not with fondness. We were nice watching Dads Army and she said how unrealistic it was and how people weren’t always supportive of each other and how frightening it was not knowing what the future held and if you were going to ge able to feed your children

There wasn't any actual reporting for me, but lots of comments and judgements about those who weren't seen to be doing the 'right' thing. Eg my mum slagging off someone who wasn't wearing a mask in the supermarket, or my auntie and her neighbours noticing and commenting on the fact that their other neighbour's car had been absent for a few days so they'd obviously illegally gone to their 2nd home at the coast etc etc.

Just little things like that, from people who are usually totally normal.

Tomorrow is the 75th birthday of the only organisation that wanted me to stay at home, not see family hell criminilized me seeing my family

Sugaristheenemy · 04/07/2023 16:20

It was defiantly all very surreal

I was still going to work so not imprisoned in my flat which made all the difference I think.
It’s funny, but when I thought I was going to be stuck at home indefinitely, unable to work, (maybe WFH if/when the IT department caught up) I was freaked out. I would have said it was a dream come true a few months previous.

Silverbook · 04/07/2023 16:21

I still can’t believe it happened the way it did. I can’t believe the restrictions or the compliance. It was a very surreal time.

Twiglets1 · 04/07/2023 16:22

It feels like a bad dream.

It even makes me feel a bit angry inside now when I hear people still using “Covid” as an excuse to not do something.
For Gods sake, it was an awful time, yet some people seem to still want to cling onto it just because it suits their agenda.
I had to work throughout as a key worker don’t like being reminded of that time or the way it bought out utter selfishness in people.

JenniferBooth · 04/07/2023 16:23

What i experienced at Christmas 2020 was I got PMed through fb several times by a man id never physically met who asked me if i had spent Christmas with my family and then asked if i was still following the rules, and how we should all follow the rules unlike some. It was fucking creepy. A man PMing a woman he has never physically met late at night to make sure/ ask if she is still following the rules.

That’s really interesting, someone I work with got pins and needles in her legs on the way back home from her covid vaccine. She walks with crutches now and really struggles. The doctors say oh well it might be long covid, it might be some weird neurological disease we’re yet to diagnose, could be the vaccine. 🤷‍♀️

dd in her early 20s got blood clots following the vaccine and has been really poorly since.

Pins and needles and other neuro and painful symptoms often show up in the wake of a virus though and eventually go on to be diagnosed as ME as there's no other explanation for them. I have similar symptoms after catching a virus over ten years ago which had nothing to do with vaccines at all. The ME community see Long Covid as another brand of ME and I can remember thinking with a sinking heart that lots of people would not recover properly from Covid as I know so many other people who haven't recovered from other viruses.

Tara336 · 04/07/2023 16:24

It does feel like a strange dream and I'm.so grateful it is over. I couldn't attend the funeral if a very close relative right at the beginning of lockdown I still feel so upset about that. I also remember feeling excited to enter a shop again when restrictions lifted a bit (I had to shield) it was a one in one out policy so even seeing complete strangers standing 2m away was scary but also exciting to see someone other then DH. I used to just pop to the shops if I needed something when it ran out and now I hoard toiletries as the feeling of not being able to get the everyday items unless I ordered online (and they may or may not arrive within a couple weeks) was a horrible feeling so I'm prepared for all eventualities now.

What countries had it bad in Europe- Belarus, Russia were lais back, Sweden did not have any lockdown at all, Baltics had distancing etc but life otherwise was as usual, doctors and surgrons helf their apps and dentists stayed open-unlike in the uk where we still see the knock on effect..

In Spain the lockdowns were really harsh with people shut in their flats for months on end, same in Italy. In France people had to fill in online forms to be allowed to leave their villages.

I totally agree on the covid card still being used.

Ive just had an email about my meter readings. It states I should wear a mask if possible, keep a minimum of two meters away from the bloke reading my meters and ensure the room is well ventilated.

It’s been 3 years ffs - I will not be doing any of those things in my own home. If he doesn’t want to come in without rules I’ll send my own reading thank you
