To ask if anyone else feels like the covid era is a bad dream

Whenever I think of 2020 or 2021 it just doesn’t feel real at all. The lockdowns for months on end, the clapping for the NHS, the track and trace system, entire school years being sent home because a single case was discovered, panic buying, people developing intricate methods of sanitising their shopping, public shaming of rule breakers, religious holidays being stopped at very short notice. It’s all so bizarre to think of that this was in our country so recently and, really, there’s nothing to stop any of it happening again. In so many ways it just feels like a different world, my DS who had his GCSE’s cancelled is about to go off to uni (if he gets the grades 🤞) and my then little year 7 DD is doing her own GCSE’s next year. I guess my Aibu is to ask if anyone else feels so totally disconnected from that era to the extent it’s all like a bad dream?

Everyone was pretty scared

No, not everyone. I knew from the early days that Covid was a mild illness for the vast majority of people who were to get it. And that the media were playing on fear, because that’s how they make money. I’ll never stop feeling angry that the unnecessary rules and guidance had so much adverse impact, especially on kids lives.

I'm very glad it was mild for you.

It almost killed my mum and has left me with long lasting and debilitating symptoms.

So you can shove off with the mild bullshit.

JenniferBooth · 04/07/2023 15:45

Funny that cos i remember the rush for the trains on December 19th 2020 when Christmas was "cancelled" and people who rushed for the trains were called all sorts of names.

@TheWalrusdidbeseech Go and tell that to the people still going through the courts for breaking Covid rulz while others got away with partying.

You minimize and dismiss what people in the UK went through yet if a similar virus came along which affected children you would expect us all to go through it all again yeah cos its well known that the minimization and dismissal of sacrifices made is the surefire way of getting ppl to do it again. well its a no from me. NO WAY I said in April 2020 that whatever we do it will never be enough and i was proved right.

I am not minimising, I am comparing with people from neighbouring countries had to go through. I was worried we would be on the same level, but very grateful we never had to go through it.
I am not even talking about China and the ones who had the worst lockdown, just Europe.

It's true that we were lucky our lockdowns were relatively mild.I Would it help anyone to pretend otherwise? I still didn't enjoy one bit being locked in this country.

Do I believe we could have to go through something like that again, we could be submitted to some kind of lockdown, to curfews or restrictions? It would be incredibly naive we are safe from wars, public unrest, pandemic. We are not special. We are lucky. We are not terribly resilient, that is true also.

BorisKilledMyHusband · 04/07/2023 15:46

Haven’t RTFT as I know I’ll only get angry and namechanged from my usual as identifiable.

My husband died of covid aged just 54 before vaccines were available. In fact he died on the same day as that Christmas party video, so that was a pretty hefty kick in the teeth. The reality of the pandemic is all too real for bereaved families, people with long covid and those whose jobs were affected.

I’m sure there are people on here arguing we were mugs for accepting lockdown etc, but I would argue that failure to manage lockdown properly led to more deaths than necessary. My DH caught covid in hospital just weeks after Boris Johnson refused to implement a half term firebreak in England in the autumn of 2020 allegedly saying ‘let the bodies pile high’.

That’s really interesting, someone I work with got pins and needles in her legs on the way back home from her covid vaccine. She walks with crutches now and really struggles. The doctors say oh well it might be long covid, it might be some weird neurological disease we’re yet to diagnose, could be the vaccine. 🤷‍♀️

dd in her early 20s got blood clots following the vaccine and has been really poorly since.

Blood clots are so common after covid shots, hence why they are called clot shots. supposedly causing white stringy clots unlike ever seen before that is tens of cm-s long.

my husbands work colleagues husband has to go to hospital regularly to remove clots,he git then after covid vaccines too-his wife told my husband the staff at the hospital said they are over run, never saw them before covid vaccines.

and of course the sudden increase in cardiac arrests, young fit people dieing.

when the goverment gives you something for free, makes a song and dance about it,if that dosent work threatend to leave you unemployed-whatever it is, you dont want it,run the other direction.

Crikeyalmighty · 04/07/2023 15:47

@HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas Yep- I couldn't say which, as I had both close together . Neuro stuff is very very common for some, including a lot of internal vibrations and muscle twitches, which is pretty frightening stuff I can tell you -- whereas others have developed more issues around heart/breathing and fatigue type stuff

It's funny the medical staff who worked on covid wards during the pandemic don't agree with you.

Twattergy · 04/07/2023 15:49

It does feel like a bad dream. I'll always be angry about the second round of school closures in Jan 21. Its surprising how many Covid signs/posters are still up if you look for them (in shops/offices). I feel angry when I see them and have to resist urge to rip them down. I know they were necessary once but seeing them now they seem ridiculous.

Crikeyalmighty · 04/07/2023 15:49

@BorisKilledMyHusband I can totally understand your anger too- the idea it was all fat, unfit over 75s with underlying issues simply is not the case .

We didn’t have ‘mild’ lockdowns

I'm with you. I don't know how people aren't embarrassed to moan about wearing masks - maybe it saved lives.
Because it was people they don't know, or 'a minority', they don't matter.

I'm so very sorry for your loss. Flowers

JenniferBooth · 04/07/2023 15:50

How the fuck were they mild when police were arresting women going for takeaway coffee.

And even if people were old, overweight or had underlying issues doesn’t mean they were expendable, or less deserving of life.

We had one of those in wales. Covid rates ended up higher than in England.

BorisKilledMyHusband · 04/07/2023 15:56

@DarkForces I didn’t realise that. In any case the whole handling of the pandemic was a shitshow. Will be following the inquiry carefully.

BorisKilledMyHusband · 04/07/2023 15:57

@Quarantino Thank you

Quarantino · 04/07/2023 15:58

The way they just let it spread unchecked in care homes.... despicable.
So much more they could've done.

GlitteryGreen · 04/07/2023 15:59

Yes I agree. I was talking to OH recently about how we were so strict about only leaving the house once a day and I wouldn't let him go to the post office to return something because it wasn't 'essential' 😂

On a more serious note though, it's actually scary how quick people were to follow such rules and also to turn on neighbours. I am so lucky that we didn't suffer any bereavements or family illnesses during that time as I'm not sure I'd ever be able to get over the anger of losing a loved one and not being able to be with them/attend funerals etc.

dreamingofskeggie · 04/07/2023 15:59

Haveyoutried · 04/07/2023 14:01

Still in it. Living nightmare. Long Covid. 2 million people in the UK suffering every day 🙃

Or, as I prefer to pronounce it, "vaccine injury".

DarkForces · 04/07/2023 15:55

That's why we had one. Rates in my county had been astronomical from the end of September

Quarantino · 04/07/2023 16:00

Genuinely, I've never heard of people 'turning on neighbours' or dobbing anyone in - except frothy threads on MN which I take with a large pinch of salt.

Everyone was respectful where I was.

SunnyEgg · 04/07/2023 16:02

I’m not sure who’s going to stand up at the inquiry and be accountable for the harm to dc and young people.

Since no one remembered to advocate for them in the first place

Well a few on here who stood out and elsewhere. Fat lot of good that did against barrels of abuse.
