Blimey my poor son who's never left the country , contact children's services due to his 'suffering'

Indeed. My DD told me that some people at her school are sorry for her that she has never been on a plane. I told her she could swap with all the children who have never left their hometown or had a holiday anywhere. She agreed that perhaps she was being a bit spolit!

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/07/2023 23:10

No. We've had our usual yearly holidays abroad

We book it previous year so this years was booked and paid for last year

We have literally booked for next year but haven't paid for it yet. Just the 25% deposit which is affordable at £175

Nw22 · 04/07/2023 07:17

We haven’t booked anything abroad this year so far but that is because we are moving house and I’m not happy leaving our dog, rather than the cost.

Ifartglitterybaubles · 04/07/2023 08:03

We're off abroad in a few weeks. No mortgage, we fixed our dual fuel DD until December before the prices became crazy, we also have Solar panels and DH is a higher earner. We have decent savings and haven't had to cut back on much. I realise that we are ok financially now but that hasn't always been the case.
We've also lost DH"s parents and my mum in the last 3 years and the only reason we are now mortgage free/financially comfortable is due to inheritances.

Sceptre86 · 04/07/2023 08:56

Yes we are going abroad but haven't been for 8 years. I don't feel it's a necessity to go every year but we've never taken our kids abroad and would like to now. We've had 3 kids in that time, bought a house, are doing up said house, have had family weddings, deaths etc. We will still do breaks away in the UK and have a week away next week, a week in August and a long weekend in September. Everyone priorities differently and that is fine.

Aposterhasnoname · 04/07/2023 08:59

We’ve been to Cyprus already and are off to Turkey at the end of August. We’re also having a few uk short breaks, Windsor for two nights tomorrow being one of them.

Panapan · 03/07/2023 15:58

We are doing a house-swap in the UK as a way to keep costs down. It’s not for everyone but we get to explore a new area and don’t pay for accommodation.

@Panapan We've done some house swaps too. I think it's a great way to have a cheap holiday

HighEndGrifters · 04/07/2023 09:17

We are going to Costa del Soffits and new fence this year.

We really struggled for money in the early years and although we have in excess of £150,000 on easy access deposit and over £100,00 with Royal London and are mortgage and debt free with an retirement income of £50,000, I can’t bring myself to have both soffits and fencing and a holiday. 🙄

Being broke never leaves you.

We will do some city breaks soon, but I really need to let go of the past and start spending.

FarTooHotForMe · 04/07/2023 09:31

HighEndGrifters

Do your soffits, fence and have a holiday. With the higher interest rates your savings will back up to what they are now by the end of the year.

I am in a similar position to you but with a slightly higher household pension and am enjoying multiple holidays a year.

HighEndGrifters · 04/07/2023 09:42

@FarTooHotForMe

Like I said hard to let go, this is our first year of retirement, if I am my mothers daughter I will get in to the spending groove…..😂

Though in fairness, it was her reckless spending leaving her with poor pensions that has me in this mindset.

LoisPrice · 04/07/2023 11:17

I’m not having as many holidays away but more to do with circumstances than money
ive been to Italy, off to West Country in august and then Vietnam later this year December. The December holiday is the big one rather than a couple or three more smaller holidays

100% agree, we have a very similar outlook, practicalities first.

tttigress · 04/07/2023 11:29

I live abroad, so my holidays are usually spent traveling back to the UK.

I've made this trip a couple of times this year. Each time the airport has been packed beyond belief. Definitely busier than pre COVID lockdowns.

SlashsHat · 04/07/2023 11:43

BeanCounterBabe · 03/07/2023 20:01

Neither. We are doing European city breaks in October and December. We live in a nice part of the country so will be staycationing (as in staying in our house) and going to the beach/day trips from here. The travel costs for our city breaks are very reasonable so I think two Autumn/Winter holidays are costing about the same as 1 Summer holiday. I have just gone up to full time as I hated my 80% contracted role and have not been able to get anything at my level PT. This is cushioning us from COL, that and reducing car use and buying from Vinted.

Thank you for using the correct defintion of a staycation.... rather than people who a call UK holiday a 'staycation' - really gets on my nerves!

To answer the OP, going (and have been) on holiday this year on European holidays. I expect we will be cutting back next year however.

People who use the term correctly get on your nerves?

Will you be staying at home rather than having an annual holiday due to the COL

Staycation have always until newsppaers used it during covid meant staying at home and doing day trips nearby.

BlueSoul · 04/07/2023 12:56

We are going on a cheaper holiday than originally planned.

Cakesandbabes · 04/07/2023 12:57

It's actually not good thing use it for holidays in uk because it just helps to upheld the "unless you go abroad it's not holidays" bs

KarmaStar · 04/07/2023 13:24

Finefinefine · 03/07/2023 14:54

No mortgage, no kids so had around 8 breaks so far this year (Uk and abroad) am on annual leave at the moment with 2 UK trips lined up for this week. Next abroad trip is in September. The only COL effects we are feeling are fuel bills and the occasional “WTF? That was 20p less last time I bought it!” in the supermarket.

Detailed the post into a bragging forum then.🙄

jd88123 · 04/07/2023 17:40

One 4 day holiday abroad here and saving for a big trip next year. Single parent dealing with bills increasing is hard. We hardly eat out at all now and finding doing much else I.e social events is a stretch. Sigh...

Hesma · 04/07/2023 17:42

I will be going on holiday as it’s already booked and paid for. Not sure about next year though

LadyWhistledownsPen · 04/07/2023 17:45

We just can't afford it with two kids. No trips abroad for us since pre-kids. We'll be going to my FILS in Costa del Conwy if we're lucky
