Just uk weekends away and glamping for us

Anoushkaka · 03/07/2023 16:42

COL hasn't really affected us. Yes food shopping and bills have increased but we have just budgeted it into our outgoings. I cook from scratch most days, DH brings lunch to work, we don't drink tea or coffee so no fancy takeouts from coffee shops.

We were in Scotland in February. I'm going to Spain for 7 weeks with the kids next week, DH will join us for the last three weeks and we have booked Gran Canaria for the 27th December.

All bills are paid and no debt apart from our mortgage. We have always been savers though which has helped.

motherofkevinnotperry · 03/07/2023 16:43

No holiday here. We both work for government organisations and we've been hammered financially over the past few years. We need to change cars and we can't afford it. Food costs are huge and our bring home salary hasn't been increased.

We're struggling.

Chocolateship · 03/07/2023 16:43

We are fortunate in that we could afford it, don't fancy spending an inflated amount though for a holiday. This year we have made bookings for day trips around the UK and a few weekends away- equitable cost wise to a holiday but I'm much more excited for it.

Oysterbabe · 03/07/2023 16:43

We'll be putting less each month into savings from next month as our new mortgage deal is £400 a month more, but are still holidaying as normal.

LegendsBeyond · 03/07/2023 16:45

We’ve got 4 holidays this year, so very lucky. We haven’t felt the impact of the CoL increase really. We’re just saving less.

FrancisSeaton · 03/07/2023 16:45

Of course not, this is six figure salary fantasy land remember

FrancisSeaton · 03/07/2023 16:46

TheWalrusdidbeseech · 03/07/2023 15:03

Holidays are not what I will sacrifice first frankly. My kids have been punished enough during the lockdowns, they need a break. I don't want to hear the word "staycation" ever again, so we're flying away.

I agree with above, airports and everything are still full, the COL doesn't seem to have affected the majority much.

It's not just holidays, hairdressers, beauty salons, so many luxury and "non-essential" places are still over-booked, it's strange.

Blimey my poor son who's never left the country , contact children's services due to his 'suffering'

GreedyEdie · 03/07/2023 16:47

I’ve voted that we’re still going on holiday but we’re now going camping in the UK, rather than to a ‘sun’ holiday.
We do actually camp every year, usually a long weekend, and the kids love it. But it’s gone from being a ‘fun extra’ to our main holiday .
it’s costing us £300 to camp for a week, would have been IRO ~£4k for a holiday abroad for family of 4.
We have also said we’ll splash out a bit on activities/treats while camping to make it more special.

MMorales · 03/07/2023 16:48

We arent going but not cos we cant afford it.

Maybe next year

MMorales · 03/07/2023 16:49

We are doing some uk based holidays though.

I dont do well with holidays abroad

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 03/07/2023 16:49

We are still going away for our main holiday but we won’t be having the other couple of short U.K. breaks we would usually have due to the rising prices.

the80sweregreat · 03/07/2023 16:49

People prioritize different things though
The very lean years of ours meant we had to stay at home or have a really cheap holiday whilst others were on exotic breaks etc.
If we couldn't afford it, we didn't go.
Some people will put it on credit or pay it off monthly or something.
Maybe next year will be different, but most people I know have something booked up

Poppysmom22 · 03/07/2023 16:51

I can afford a holiday but I just can't be bothered to go on one.

Homeywomey · 03/07/2023 16:54

We won’t be, but not exactly because of COL, but maybe related. It’s due to the massive nursery fees we are paying per month, as soon as DD hits 3 we will be able to go on holiday abroad again (rather than UK holiday) , I’m already planning our first one! However, in times past we would probably have just dipped into the savings for a holiday, but I’m much more cautious this year about eating into them too much - because of all the doom and gloom in the media and uncertainty about when inflation and interest rates are going to improve 🤷‍♀️

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 03/07/2023 16:54

We are going away this summer - it’s our first “proper” holiday since 2019, and I booked it before Truss/ Kwateng crashed the economy

GrandTheftWalrus · 03/07/2023 16:55

Been abroad twice within the last 10 months. Going away August next year. I book early enough and just pay little and often rather than a lump sum.

CeeJay81 · 03/07/2023 17:09

Just UK this year. We just did a 4 night break and have a long weekend booked in October but we do our holidays in term time. Next year/year after my ds has gcses, so itll just be a couple of UK weekend breaks instead, when the kids have an inset day. Have never been able to afford school summer holiday prices.

callingeveryone · 03/07/2023 17:09

We are going on holiday. COL is affecting us but that just means going to cheaper places, not eating out every night, etc.

BeReet · 03/07/2023 17:12

I'm not planning to go abroad till the kids have left home tbh as they do nothing but bitch and moan and I resent spending my hard earned salary on facilitating that. only half joking about this they are driving me mental

I hate how many people there are everywhere. It spoils everything having to queue up everywhere and spend time with people I would normally cross the road to avoid. I'm over it. Airports - hideous, Restaurants- hideous, Beaches - hideous. I work in a school so am trapped in their holiday limitations.

Mrphillasfoggex · 03/07/2023 17:22

We're going away as much as possible. We've had a few mini-breaks including a Centre Parcs hol already.
A trip in July, then one in August-September. I'm sure we can fit a few more in as the yr progresses.

cafenoirbiscuit · 03/07/2023 17:25

DH got made redundant so no holidays for us. Extra work being taken on by me as the sole wage earner 🙄😥

BingandSulaandFlop · 03/07/2023 17:27

We're going to Devon for 10 days tomorrow. We can still afford it but we're self catering and will be eating out a lot less than we normally would. Luckily our children are still at an age when all they want is a picnic and a playground with the occasional cream thrown in!

MerryHen · 03/07/2023 17:27

Our kids aren't yet at school so we're going away for a week before the schools break up.

DD starts school in September and I've looked up prices for going away over the school holidays next year and I'm not sure we'll be able to afford our usual holidays when we have to pay school holiday prices. We are very lucky to have family who live by the sea who have said they are happy to have us stay though so that will probably be our summer holiday next year.

UrsulaIsMyQueen · 03/07/2023 18:04

My children break up from school on Friday so we’re going away on Monday.
