It's a shame there can't be a 3rd option- holiday but downgraded. I think there'll be some people doing this too.

Oh yes, absolutely this is us. We usually have two fairly cheap UK holidays but we are looking for even cheaper ones for the foreseeable.

radiatorpipe · 03/07/2023 15:07

Definitely not, COL is negatively impacting roughly 20-25% of people - many on MN seem to forget that not everyone is struggling, in fact the majority aren’t

I suppose how you define the impact is relevant. i'm far from. struggling but my salary hasn't gone up in line with food inflation so i'm still impacted by it.

Simplepink · 03/07/2023 15:07

Holiday in a more “unusual” European country where family lives so higher standard of holiday for less than you would pay for more popular destinations. Not particularly high earners but only one child and low outgoings and tend to prioritise travel over stuff.

radiatorpipe · 03/07/2023 15:07

. I would say everyone is negatively impacted, that impact is just more of less felt depending on how much spare cash there is.

exactly

radiatorpipe · 03/07/2023 15:09

I suppose i'm also conscious that whilst things are ok for me now if there's a recession & jobs are impacted who knows.

Coffeaddict · 03/07/2023 15:09

No abroad holiday here but that's more to do with 2 pre school age sons so nursery fees are crippling us rather then COL.
We are going away camping for a few days though next week and will probably have another couple weekends over the summer but we go to a cheep cpsite and cook out own food so not much more expensive then staying home

Yeah I think there are people who have a holidays budget of x amount and it buys less now. But they can still spare that money so the holiday just looks different. Or they did have 2k and now they have 1k or whatever.

phoenixrosehere · 03/07/2023 15:11

We’re driving up to see family (not really a holiday for me) and staying in an Airbnb for 6 days which is way cheaper than a hotel, almost £300 difference.

DH says we can afford it (using savings) but we’ve done cheaper going abroad and definitely didn’t cost about £1000 either.

Shitshowatthefuckfactory · 03/07/2023 15:12

We've definitely been affected, bills and mortgage has gone up and food shop it double what it was a couple years ago.

We've stopped some things like take aways/nicer food/don't buy clothes very often/don't go out as much on weekends. We were a 2 car household and have sold 1 car so we're now sharing.

But we're still going on holidays. I'd give up lots of other things to still keep my holidays. I'll happily eat beans on toast/baked potatoes for days on end if I get to go away on holiday.

caringcarer · 03/07/2023 15:12

We paid off our mortgage in June so we're off on a cruise in October whilst DC is off on a cricket playing tour to Dubai. We are making the most of the teen not with us to get a nice couple break.

radiatorpipe · 03/07/2023 15:13

I agree with above, airports and everything are still full, the COL doesn't seem to have affected the majority much.

I think the true impact won't hit till next yr tbh.

fertip · 03/07/2023 15:13

We going to Spain next week for 10 days. Had a UK break in May. Might have another holiday in October half term. We're High earners and financially secure. Everything is more expensive but we just absorb the cost.

The number of people at airports isn't a great indicator either. One wouldn't know from looking whether people who normally go for 2 weeks have cut down to 1, picked cheaper accommodation than usual etc. People can be spending and simultaneously cutting down.

babbscrabbs · 03/07/2023 15:21

Unusually, we're going on our second holiday abroad of the year later this month. We can afford it, but only just. Ten days in France. Travel and accommodation will cost about the same as we spent on a week's stay in a Cornwall cottage a few years ago.

ThePersistenceOfMammories · 03/07/2023 15:24

No holiday for us this year. Any spare money will go back into building up our savings as they took a battering early this year with 3 major appliances needing to be replaced.

we have a trip to eurodisney next February but that was won in a competition so will only cost us food and spending money

Im99912 · 03/07/2023 15:25

I’ve had a holiday to Mexico 10days in February
a holiday to Turkey 1 week over Easter AI
10 Days in May to Tenerife AI

I had a weekend in London over the May bank holiday and another 2 night hotel stay in London next weekend

we will probably go away in oct as well

so no I’m not cutting back on my holidays

Danikm151 · 03/07/2023 15:28

I’m going on my first holiday in 6 5 years this weekend. Only a long weekend to butlins but that is what I could reasonably save for.

Just back from a week in a very nice hotel in Greece. More expensive than we would usually go for but worth every penny.

Cakesandbabes · 03/07/2023 15:31

We already managed 2 abroad. We are not high earnera. One was visit to family so saved on a hotel (spent on presents though) and not exactly holidays because it always feels like you need extra week after to rest😂

SquashPenguin · 03/07/2023 15:32

Off to Berlin and Paris in the coming weeks to see my favourite band. I’d walk there before the cost stopped me from going.

pointythings · 03/07/2023 15:32

No, but I am privileged to have no mortgage and a lot in savings. I have scooped a chunk.of money for a week in Greece for us because it's likely to be the last family holiday we will have- mine are all adults and doing their own thing more and more.

Cheapo UK holiday next year though!

cocksstrideintheevening · 03/07/2023 15:33

We went to Ireland in half term, have two weeks in the sun in August and a week in IoW in October. Contemplating going away for christmas.

I priced up the same holiday we had last summer out of interest and it has gone up by £2k. It's also fully booked.

BamBamBambi · 03/07/2023 15:34

Already had 2 in the UK this year
got 1 abroad booked for school holidays
another 2 UK breaks booked for the rest of the year

Also already have Disneyland Paris booked for next year, LA, Marbella and possibly Girona.

Floofydawg · 03/07/2023 15:34

Nope, have already had three weeks abroad this year and another booked for after the school hols. No kids to pay for though, which obviously makes a difference.
