Unusually, we're going on our second holiday abroad of the year later this month. We can afford it, but only just. Ten days in France. Travel and accommodation will cost about the same as we spent on a week's stay in a Cornwall cottage a few years ago.

Good point, and same for us. We have an airbnb in scandinavia with ryan air flights. It will cost us less than a similar holiday in the UK.

Having said I’m on holiday… this is obviously bollocks.

Even though we’re lucky enough to have plenty of disposable income, inflation makes everyone poorer. We’re all negatively impacted, even if it’s in a ‘save less’ or ‘going to Spain not the Maldives’ type way.

Is that the definition of 'struggling' though?

We're being more careful about what is spent at the supermarket, choices we make etc, but I dont consider that to be struggling. We're not worried about having the heating on or eating or heating, or having to stop buying clothes (albeit they're from supermarkets)

So Im not struggling but Im being a bit more careful.

COL hasn't really had a significant impact on our finances. Not been on holiday for over 5 years though. I've lost interest as I fucking hate people. Since lockdown the amount of self entitled pricks I've encountered and the sheer amount of people about places where you'd previously hardly see anyone has dramatically increased to the point I just can't be arsed with it.

Magenta65 · 03/07/2023 15:39

I think the bigger impact to holidays will be next year as mortgage come out of fixes. Plenty already had holidays booked in for this summer (likely paid for etc) so will go but may cut back on holiday spends. We’ve been affected, managing to absorb the costs but changes our 2 week holiday to 1 week and reusing lots of last years holiday bits etc. it’s costing us £1000 each for a week AI, last year 2 cost £1200 so definitely noticing the difference. We don’t splurge elsewhere in the year and always look forward to holiday. We would always find a way to have some kind of break if the money was there.

We are staying in in laws hol house by the sea in U.K. for 6 days but will be eating in the whole time

I don't see the point in going tbh but am trying to be jolly and jazz it up for kids.

I am feeling completely depressed by the whole COL - we have food but not much else tbh

I hope you all enjoy the seaside.

No holiday for us this year. Or last year. We could maybe stretch to a couple of nights away at a push.

A holiday house by the sea sounds lovely to me! We had a week by the sea in April in an air bnb. We ate at the holiday house or took a packed lunch to the beach. We had a lovely time!

Dixiechickonhols · 03/07/2023 15:56

We are going on an expensive holiday but some of it is a Covid hangover (paid in full but then moved it to 2023 as it was still compulsory Covid testing 2022 and we could move no penalty)

Thepowerhouseofthecell · 03/07/2023 15:58

I didn't vote because we've booked a caravan holiday in the UK.

Panapan · 03/07/2023 15:58

We are doing a house-swap in the UK as a way to keep costs down. It’s not for everyone but we get to explore a new area and don’t pay for accommodation.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 03/07/2023 16:01

Going abroad three times this year and a couple of UK holidays.
Making the most of it before our mortgage potentially makes us have to cut down when it goes up next year.

Singleandproud · 03/07/2023 16:05

YANBU we aren't going away, this is sort of CoL related as I had to spend £££ on DDs ASD assessment which wiped out the holiday fund.

However we also live by the sea so going away isn't so much of a treat as when I was a child and lived in a city as we go to the beach all the time anyway and UK weather is normally OK in the summer.

VenusClapTrap · 03/07/2023 16:13

This year’s holidays were already booked, but scaling back a bit next year from long haul to short haul. Dh wants us to go camping with PIL, BIL & SiLs and their dc. I have agreed to it for the sake of family harmony but will not be regarding it as a holiday can anyone recommend a campsite with a nearby spa hotel

Bananaspliff · 03/07/2023 16:15

In a very fortunate position here, been abroad twice so far this year and have a further three trips planned.

We haven’t really been impacted by the COL. We still have six years left to run on a fixed mortgage rate and we are at a low LTV. Food shopping and utilities have gone up, but we’ve had sufficient pay rises to cover it. DS started school this year so we aren’t paying out £800 a month in nursery fees like we were doing this time 12 months ago.

YallaYallaaa · 03/07/2023 16:17

Is that the definition of 'struggling' though?

No don’t worry - I’m not so crass as to think that a Spanish holiday is struggling! The PP I was responding to said that only a few people were ‘negatively impacted’, which obviously covers a lot. That’s why this is different to (say) a recession where some people lose their jobs, but most are fine.

StormShadow · 03/07/2023 15:04

It's a shame there can't be a 3rd option- holiday but downgraded. I think there'll be some people doing this too.

That’s what we are doing . Going to my happy place in Majorca but shall cut down on eating out every night.Air fares even with EJ crazily expensive!

LuthierVandross · 03/07/2023 16:28

We have noticed the increased price of things, but have been fortunate that pay/ freelance rate increases have kept up.

We didn’t go abroad for a full two years during covid, so I’ve got a huge itch to scratch. Travel is something I adore, it adds the colour to my life. I am lucky to earn a good wage and much goes on travel- I’m conscious we only have so long to enjoy places with the kids before they strap on backpacks and disappear round South America without us, so don’t want to put anything off.

This year we’ve been to Spain, DS11 and I have ten days interrailing, family fortnight in Slovenia and Rome at half term. We’ve also got several weekends away planned, with family and friends. DD and I just booked Strasbourg in December, for the Christmas market.

We are really fortunate. I thank our lucky stars every day for the career choices we’ve made.

Whiskyinajar · 03/07/2023 16:29

Not had a holiday in years, they have always been out of reach. More so now.

DontSetYourselfOnFireToKeepOthersWarm · 03/07/2023 16:34

Lots of people listing all of their expensive holidays when they could just have said they weren't cutting back. Big 'look how much money I have' energy on this thread.

the80sweregreat · 03/07/2023 16:36

We are lucky enough to be able to go away this year , but we have had a year to pay it all off by installments.
The cost of everything has gone up a lot , so been saving for the sundries like airport parking and the extra things you need to buy.
I do feel that the era of the cheaper deals are at an end now and eventually it'll be as it was when I was young , only the very rich being able to go abroad.
We had many years not doing anything at all or having a sun voucher long weekend in Devon or somewhere like that , so I am grateful we can have a trip this year.

I agree with above, airports and everything are still full, the COL doesn't seem to have affected the majority much.

I think the true impact won't hit till next yr tbh.

100% agree

Ok I must have misread, I thought they said that only about 20-25 percent of people were struggling and I would agree with that

Lots more are negatively impacted, I agree with that, but thats not struggling as you say

Crucible · 03/07/2023 16:40

Have been away in the UK earlier this year and am booked already to go away again in the UK later this year, only a week each time. We don't go abroad, it is planned and booked far far in advance owing to caring responsibilities. We skipped completely last year, and booked ahead for this year. It's more complex than cost of living for me. Very much looking forward to next short break (but already worried about leaving family members). So not quite what you're asking about, but the cost of living is a minor factor.
