Bit naughty but I find this bit of karma so satisfying and amusing

So I have taxi driver friend - he picked a woman up from the airport and took her to her home. He says she was chatty and friendly throughout the ride. Got to hers -the fare was just over 60 quid. He helped her with her bags , she said she had to go indoors to get his money. Ten minutes passed and nothing he knocked on the door -no answer. Knocked again - she leaned out of an upstairs window and asked him what he wanted - he obviously told her. She said she didn’t know what he was on about -she hadn’t been in his cab. Closed the window- he banged on the door again. She leaned out again and threatened to call the police and tell them he was harassing her. She clearly never had any intention of paying him- though they agreed the fare before the ride.. He walked back his car debating what to do. Then he heard a mobile phone ring in the back of the cab. He answered it and was her demanding her phone back . He said “sorry you seem to have forgotten you weren’t in my cab !” He drove off - I don’t know tbh what he intends to do with the phone . But talk about reaping what you sow . Dunno if I’m being mean to find it so satisfying 🤷‍♀️

This is one of them there urban myths, right?

Yes. I heard it as a story from our local airport.

Clarich007 · 02/07/2023 16:44

Don't believe a word of it 😏

Taxi drivers have it tough, they used to get scammed a lot. I'm glad that all our local ones have little cameras in now - there's a notice to warn you. One taxi driver told me that it's made a huge difference to people dashing off without paying. I also think it will help lone female passengers feel safer.

LadyLardy · 02/07/2023 16:51

BIL is a taxi driver. A call to the police will sort this. He's had to do it occasionally - but it's not uncommon. The police will tell them they pay or face charges - it is a criminal offense and she's a fool (if this is true).

diddl · 02/07/2023 16:55

I don't understand why he didn't tell her to go ahead & call the police tbh.

Yes, all the airport cameras would confirm she used the taxi.

NorthStarRising · 02/07/2023 16:59

The brass neck!!! I cannot imagine just jumping out and then claiming I never got in the taxi, she sounds mental!

Very similar to the people who dine and dash. And many restaurant chains make the wait staff whose table it was pick up the tab.
There are a lot of dishonest, arrogant people out there who will not only cheat and trick others, they will film themselves doing it and post online.
Except she can’t, because she has no phone.

ALongHardWinter · 02/07/2023 17:00

Serves her right!

I hope he has CCTV in his cab. I’m not saying she would, but if she was bad enough to refuse to pay, and now has not got her phone, I would be a little worried that she might make an allegation that would destroy him whatever the outcome…..

Dinga591 · 02/07/2023 17:06

He should take the phone to the police and explain what has happened.
He then takes advice from the police and acts on it.
😀

Nofreshstarthere22 · 02/07/2023 17:08

What a c*nt. His response is brilliant. If she rings again, he should tell her, if she transfers the money she owes she can have the phone.

Fooodie · 02/07/2023 17:18

It's not uncommon for passengers to stiff a taxi driver. Young people on a night out spend their taxi fare on drink instead, When they get a taxi home they offer sexual favours in liu of cash, or they tell the driver to wait for a parent to pay. Inevitably driver has to contact the police to retrieve the fare. Thank goodness for CCTV. The story about the phone maybe an urban legend but stiffing the taxi driver most certainly is not. People who do this should be prosecuted and blacklisted.

Why?

What part don’t you believe?

Maireas · 02/07/2023 17:27

If any taxi drivers still don't have cameras, they need to get them, pdq.
A dine and dash group in my town were located and prosecuted because of cctv. They were clearly identifiable.

truthhurts23 · 02/07/2023 17:29

I would delete all the photos and memory on the phone and then sell it , so I’ll be getting more than my 60 back and some for my troubles

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 02/07/2023 17:34

I’ve heard tales of this happen a few times.

Once I was back from the airport in a black taxi. My credit card had had fraud on it whilst I was abroad and so was stopped and all I had was US dollars plus my debit card and not much in UK sterling left. I did have another credit card on me but as I rarely used it I couldn’t remember the pin. I’d tried one ATM on the way back and apparently I think it was out of order (bank Holiday weekend) so I knew I had enough cash at home so I asked if it was ok to do this. Luckily it was there but I had to remember where I’d put it and I took at least 10 minutes to find it but left my luggage in the cab as safeguard for him. He did mention jokingly “I thought you’d done a runner” when I came out with the cash but I gave him a generous tip to make up for the wait (he’d kindly switched off the meter on arrival and I recall saying to him he could’ve left it on and I wouldn’t have minded! Poor man was left with a long journey home too (Essex) but he did agree to pick up my fare at the airport).

But then in theory couldn’t she counter sue for theft?

I think this woman was out of order but if I was the taxi driver I’d let her know if she didn’t pay my fare then she wouldn’t be getting her phone back and I’d be reporting her to the police for dodging the fare and non payment. The police may just suggest if she pays then he returns her phone.

I wouldn’t damage the phone either. I’d be tempted to do this though!

I don’t think he needs cctv in his cab. The airport taxi terminal should have cctv there.

A taxi driver wouldn’t generally the ones I know, bother to report a non paying customer to the police but unless she can provide proof she’s paid (hopefully he’d have given her some sort of receipt either by card machine or paper receipt) then it’s a dispute between both of them that she’s not paid and then he’s kept her phone. If we’re going down the morality route here he could state that he’d found her phone (assumed it was hers) in his cab after he’d dropped her off and was going to return it to her. Most cabbies I know don’t keep mislaid items in cabs..

GoodChat · 02/07/2023 17:45

@GonnaGetGoingReturns they're suggesting she could make claims of sexual assault or similar if there's no CCTV in his cab

Mylifeislikeaboatrace · 02/07/2023 17:46

Look up what karma really means, because it's not this at all.

Marmitecrumpetswithalittlecheese · 02/07/2023 17:49

Yes and to get her phone back she needs to pay the £60 plus his fee for another journey to drop it off. Bank payment

MysteryBelle · 02/07/2023 17:59

How did she call when her phone was in the cab?

A lot of people stopped having landlines, but I guess she still had her landline?

I don’t believe this. He immediately answered her cell phone? A cab driver would most likely hear it ring but not answer it, but yes hold on to it because it is obviously leverage against someone who refused to pay and performed a one act play to entertain us. But to immediately answer it? He didn’t know her name, did he? So if her name showed up on her phone, he wouldn’t recognize and know to answer it. But you say she called and demanded her phone back. Unless she hung out of the second story window again while calling on her landline to her cell phone in the cab so cab driver would know it’s her and would know to answer it, why would he answer it?

MysteryBelle · 02/07/2023 18:02

And since he knew it was her phone, no need to answer it in case it was the owner and could then be returned, because he was at the home of the owner already and he had no intention of giving it back, rightly, until she paid her bill.

And isn’t it interesting there’s no real ending to the story?

Pearlsaminga · 02/07/2023 18:06

Woah!
RESULT😎

MysteryBelle · 02/07/2023 18:10

And if he helped her with her bags, wouldn’t that mean carrying some of them to the front door? And she is just going in to get the money, but she closed and locked the door, after being very chatty so she wasn’t afraid of him, and he didn’t notice the sound of the door being locked, and waited a full ten minutes before knocking again? Sure. Ten minutes is a very long time to wait for someone to quickly grab money. Much used formulaic joke structure.
