Can they actually afford another referendum ? I thought the coffers were filled with bits of fluff and moths ?

DemiColon · 01/07/2023 22:51

I'm not a big fan of referendums generally, they are appropriate in rare instances, but not generally.

I am somewhat skeptical if this is a serious idea though. It may be a matter of testing the waters on certain policy directions the Tories are thinking about for the next election.

In general, I think how to deal with refugees is a huge issue and is going to be a more and more pressing one, as numbers will increase, questionable cases will increase, and stress on infrastructure increases. Many people feel the current system doesn't work, but there are no really compelling ideas about how to improve it on the table from any party.

Bubblyb00b · 01/07/2023 23:02

What is her problem? She is totally obsessed with sending people to Rwanda. Total nutjob.

no more referendums, just get rid of this stupid government please, they all are shockingly incompetent.

Boomboom22 · 01/07/2023 23:09

Problem is the general public seem to think its fine for people to come here no papers illegally so they are encouraged to keep coming. Any deterrent the gov want to do is struck down in court. Funnily enough the rest of Europe and Australia seem to be supported by their populations to reject illegal immigration so the jungle in calais isn't really protested about etc. Not sure what the answer is when half of us want the boats stopped and the other half think we can house anyone who wants to come here and is rich enough to pay a smuggler.

Boomboom22 · 01/07/2023 23:11

Not that the Rwanda policy makes any sense at all as a deterrent BTW if they'll take 500 people over 5 years but 40000 this year so far...

MargotBamborough · 01/07/2023 23:16

A referendum on withdrawing from the ECHR would be an incredibly stupid idea.

Too many people think that human rights laws only stop criminals from getting what they deserve and that they personally would have nothing to fear if human rights laws were scrapped because they are good girls and boys and so the government wouldn't harm them.

Just like the last issue we had a referendum on, human rights are really poorly understood by the electorate.

I can only hope that if we did have a referendum on this topic, people would vote to give the Tories a kicking and it would fail.

Swrigh1234 · 01/07/2023 14:32

They have all the tools at their disposal to stop this problem. They just don’t want to.

Uncontrolled mass immigration is a policy choice, not an accident.

I would be interested to know what these are. I've never read an article or heard an interview with anyone on this subject which suggests this.

sussexman · 01/07/2023 23:47

TooBigForMyBoots · 01/07/2023 15:20

If we vote to leave the ECHR the UK government would not be bound by its rulings and could do whatever it wants.

The plan would be to leave the European Convention on Human Rights (and so not be subject to European Court decisions).

That's no more

  • Obligation to Respect Human Rights
  • Right to Life
  • Prohibition of Torture
  • Prohibition of Slavery and Forced Labour
  • Right to Liberty and Security
  • Right to a fair trial
  • No Punishment without Law
  • Right to Respect and a Family Life
  • Freedom of Conscience

and so on.

Endlesssummer2022 · 02/07/2023 00:02

The knuckle draggers would rush to vote away their own human rights to spite immigrants.

And why is this crazy racist so obsessed with boat people? Is there nothing else in her in-tray, like policing for example?

definitely for a referendum... one where we choose who will lead the country... what's that called again?

this rwanda batshit crazy idea aside, I am all for another referendum on rejoining the EU

JenniferBooth · 02/07/2023 01:00

@DemiColon There is a group of people who literally have no voice in this and that is the staff getting made redundant from the hotels.

I'm not sure that's very relevant in formulating refugee policy, tbh.

I am disgusted that this government is sacrificing our tourism and hospitality industries for this shit.

We don't need the Rwanda scheme.
We don't need another fucking referendum.
We need our government to, you know, actually do the fucking work and process asylum claims.Angry

All the Tories have is a culture war to cling to. It worked before with Brexit so they hope it works for this. (Incidentally they are doing the same with the trans issue. They give not a fuck about womens spaces etc)

JenniferBooth · 02/07/2023 13:55

YY @TooBigForMyBoots Completely agree Why are they so fucking slow
Someone has to making big money out of this situation.

Part of the reason it takes so long to process claims and remove people are legal challenges based on …. You guessed it.
there are lots of reasons why leaving the ECHR is a bad idea - principally because it’s stitched into international arrangements which are valuable - but we have to face the fact that it will be impossible to implement the stringent immigration regime people seem to want while we remain bound by it and braverman is the only politician honest enough to admit this.

They can have a many 'tools' as they want, but as long as we have 'pinko' judges scuppering any plans put in front of them it will continue.

They just don’t want to.

That's pants ^.

Uncontrolled mass immigration is a policy choice, not an accident.

A choice that started with Tony Blair.
Under New Labour net migration to theUK quadrupled from around 50,000 every year before 1997 to around 200,000 averaging out over 1997 to 2010. It continued at this large scale pace for the remainder of the Labour Governments.

The EHCR is no longer fit for purpose, so we should leave.

peucepetunias · 02/07/2023 14:13

@TooBigForMyBoots
We need our government to, you know, actually do the fucking work and process asylum claims.

So they process the claims and recommend people to be deported, but the immigration lawyer (being paid with our money) submit appeal after appeal and finally some 'pinko' judge says they can stay because their Human Rights are being infringed.

Then we get cases like these ;-

@DemiColon No it isnt. But its not fair to not give them a voice. They are losing their jobs which could lead to them losing their homes. And are not allowed to complain. The only outlet ive seen giving them a voice is GB News And we have already seen what happens when the left ignores them and the right fills that void. The left is failing them.

pinklama · 02/07/2023 14:38

I am going to move to Orkney, which despairs of both the US and Scottish government, and wants to be part of Norway.

TooBigForMyBoots · 02/07/2023 14:42

We have always been able to deport failed asylum seekers. We have all the laws necessary. As have other European signatories to the ECHR. The Tories just haven't bothered their arse doing the work.

Lazy, incompetent fucking chancers!Angry
