To wonder if Labour actually will be any better?

Baabaagreysheep · 30/06/2023 13:35

I think like most people I am keen to see the back of the current bunch, but I am not confident that anything will massively change for the better. Maybe that’s a bit pessimistic, but I feel that while some things will improve some will get worse - and some sort of at the same time, so I’m expecting my salary to go up but also my workload to go up!

Thinking back to when Labour were last in power it was another world, really. Interested in views.

Lots of people make money and work abroad and stay here. Why assume he won’t? What’s different about him? That’s the question.
Even if you aren’t motivated by bias, there’s clear potential implications attached to your assumption, which aren’t that pleasant. So best steered clear of.

The words used were "He’d piss off back to the US if he was kicked out."

Especially the word "back". He is not from the US so why say he would go back?

I understand the person saying this, hates the Tories and Sunak in particular. But yes, this implies they think people of non white British descent should 'piss off back when kicked out'

AgathaSpencerGregson · 03/07/2023 15:24

Probably worth mentioning also that I have Asian heritage colleagues and acquaintances who have mentioned hearing this sort of talk and being made very uneasy by it. Do people think they, too, would have “no reason to stay” if they were wealthy?
I don’t say this reaction would be universal - there’s always diversity of views - but it’s enough for me to feel this sort of talk should be off limits.

Feeble. Just get the offensive post deleted. It makes you look awful.

What are you talking about?
We regularly get told the ultra rich are mobile and will leave the UK if the tax/world regime here doesn't suit them. I assumed blossom was saying other countries might be more appealing to Sunak if he was no longer PM, rather than he should leave.
A bit like David Miliband when he went to the states after losing the labour leadership.
It's not really OK to imply someone's racist in bad faith because you don't agree with their politics

EffortlessDesmond · 03/07/2023 15:48

I'd like a holiday rental house to have a good standard of equipment, nothing that's not already been mentioned though except it would be nice to have a couple of USB sockets for charging phones.

I totally read this as going back to somewhere he'd been before (because he's studied and worked in the US), rather than somewhere that some of his family originated from. In the same way that I am British (and currently live here) but have lived and worked abroad and would happily go back there.

EffortlessDesmond · 03/07/2023 15:49

Whoops! I posted the above on the wrong thread. As you were.

Does it matter what my ethnicity is? Why?
you’re desperately trying to find reasons why what has been said might not result from racial bias. I’d remind you that the remarks included the suggestion that he “should piss off back” and had “no reason to stay.” If I were you, I’d think a bit carefully about what and who I’m defending here.

Keir Starmer and the Labour Party are the equivalent to Nicola Sturgeon and the SNP in my opinion. They’ll pursue a whole load of ultra left wing identity politics and drive our education system into tatters just like Scotland and Wales. They’ll raise taxes and squander it on more trans rainbow crossings. There’s not a single Labour politician who I think is actually bright and articulate - ok wait Rosie Duffield is. Angela Rayner and Jess Phillips are disappointing on women’s rights. Rachel Reeve even worse.

Wes Sweeting? Maybe the best of a very poor bunch.

I think Rishi Sunak is steady, competent and hardworking. I’d trust him over Keir Starmer in this global shit show of post pandemic economic instability and the dominance of Queer theory and Oppression Olympics. Rishi Sunak stands up for women’s rights too so he gets my vote as pretty much the only leader in the democratic world who is doing so. Why would I EVER vote otherwise as a woman? No self respecting woman should vote for a party that ignores her sex.

It’s really not ok to ignore clear implications of racial bias because you support the posters politics.

I’m interested why you think it matters what I am (note I have not said anything about that). Why is it relevant?

Where does the poster say "should"?

Should would indeed imply a racial bias, but I think the poster said he'd which would be he would rather than he should.

Ah but you see that’s not taking into account his race. Which I think makes you racist?

I don’t think it makes any difference, does it? Why would he “piss off back”?

AgathaSpencerGregson · 03/07/2023 16:07

And where on earth does the suggestion that a man with roots, family, home, long career in politics here has “no reason to stay” come from? Just bizarre.

AgathaSpencerGregson · 03/07/2023 16:01

Well yes, inconveniently, the meaning of the sentence would be changed depending on whether would or should is used.

Generally people piss off somewhere then they are fed up of the place they are currently in and I think few people would begrudge him that feeling right now.

Cornettoninja · 03/07/2023 16:12

long career in politics

what?!?! He was first elected as an MP in 2015! I’ve got jeans with a longer career than Rishi’s political one. 😂

Chocchops72 · 03/07/2023 16:13

I don’t have much hope. I remember the last time Labour were in power- everything felt so optimistic. The same conditions just don’t exist now and it feels like a slog whoever is in power.

I’m Scottish, and looking at both the SNP and the Welsh Parliament, I really losing faith in the so called ‘progressive politics’ that are on offer from the parties on the left.

They're less inclined to asset strip public services and sell to their mates/ family. That'll be a good start.
It's not going to be easy for them. If ever there was a poisoned chalice it's the current mess.

DdraigGoch · 03/07/2023 18:34

The Brown government would have left us better prepared for the pandemic.

The current shower running Labour on the other hand...
