Rwanda ruling

OwlBabiesAreCute · 29/06/2023 18:17

Suella Braverman says today's Supreme Court ruling against the UK government's plan to send immigrants to Rwanda is a disappointment for most people.

Not for me it isn't.

AIBU? Am I in the minority?

Well, I'm not. Bring in safe and legal routes. Get enough staff in to clear the backlog and then process the people who come in. If that can be done efficiently - including removal of people who don't have a genuine claim - then the UK won't be seen as an easy target.

Oh, and collaborate internationally, including with those people on the other side of the Channel, what are theyb called again? Oh yeah, the EU.

BIWI · 29/06/2023 18:24

Home Secretary Suella Braverman said the "system is rigged against the British people" (from BBC News)

FFS.

TrickyBiscuits · 29/06/2023 18:26

No, you’re not. I’m sick of being gaslit by the govt. They’re not even doing it well, as if we’re just a pack of idiots.

LlynTegid · 29/06/2023 18:27

There are British territories that could be used. Places where there was not a genocide in recent memory. If you accepted the case for those who did not come to the country on a visa or pre-approved scheme should not wait in the UK whilst a claim is processed.

lavenderlou · 29/06/2023 18:27

Braverman and her cronies don't even care if they never send any asylum seekers to Rwanda. They just want to look like they want to so they can win votes from a certain group of voters. Now they don't have to do anything and can blame it all on meanie lefty judges.

This

TrickyBiscuits · 29/06/2023 18:37

The safe and legal routes that are touted do not apply to the vast vast majority of people who seek asylum - including all those who are granted it in the UK.
I work in immigration law and if it wasn’t so distressing it would be funny (IYSWIM) because the actual reality is so far removed from the posturing it feels like a bad comedy.

TrickyBiscuits · 29/06/2023 18:40

And the govt. are presenting themselves as the warriors against a problem that they have solely and entirely created.

100% this

Exasperatednow · 29/06/2023 18:41

I'm delighted. Maybe we can finally remember that most British people have morals.

I really want her to f off into obscurity. Preferably somewhere else. Can we deport her for being a danger to the country?

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 29/06/2023 18:42

Germany is doing this, though. They seem to think it’s okay

Are they actually doing it? All I can find are proposals, none of them nearly as advanced as the UK's Rwanda policy, none implemented because yes, they're hitting the same human rights barriers.

Thebestwaytoscareatory · 29/06/2023 18:47

Yanbu at all in my opinion. I had a look at how various media platforms were reporting it and the right leaning outlets made for saddening and scary reading.

People genuinely calling for the removal of the courts / judges so that politicians can pass whatever laws they want. It's frightening that people like that have the right to vote.

I was going to say the same. Germany are not doing it although it's been proposed. Looks like the UK government is first to actually try and implement it.

No Germany isn't. Its been reported in the Daily Mail and Telegraph (those reliable sources) that they are potentially thinking about it (propposed by certain parties.
But and a big but they have legal routes and are welcoming to migrants.

Maybe read different newspapers.

chupachucks · 29/06/2023 18:50

Well I agree with her, go figure 🤔

Really? If they succeed things may shift generally

If Germany jumped off a bridge, would you do it?

Just because they do something (which they don’t) doesn’t mean we should.

hattie43 · 29/06/2023 19:09

I'm not surprised it failed . Why choose Rwanda no wonder people are filled with horror .
I can't grasp why they don't spend the money wracking up the staff to process applications including the backlog and allow those who can remain to get on with their lives and anyone not allowed is removed .
I so believe we should automatically expel / remove anyone who commits a crime on British soil . We have enough criminals of our own .

Ermm. Which "British territories " exactly? You think they actually want to be a part of a deeply offensive and racist policy? Most of them are busy trying not to be "British"!

Exasperatednow · 29/06/2023 19:15

Just to be clear.

GERMANY ISNT DOING THIS.

I think this thread illustrates some of why this country is so divided.

One person makes a statement which is not true (Germany also deporting people to Rwanda). Despite all the subsequent comments pointing out this is not true, it gets quotes as fact time and time again.
