I’m a teacher. Aibu to politely tell my colleague that his food is too smelly to be eaten in the staff room? Most of us have a sandwich but he microwaves strong smelling food every single day.

Well my child is forced to sit in a smelly dinner hall every day to eat her lunch so why does a teacher's discomfort trump hers!
(She's diagnosed with spd and can't eat in the smelly environment so eats nothing all day)

She should be able to eat her packed lunch in the classroom or playground though?

NEmama · 27/06/2023 20:57

Get them told. We had a dirty bastard that microwaved fish 😨🤢😨

MrsCarson · 27/06/2023 20:58

I only pop into our staff room to make a quick coffee and then go back in my office to eat and drink due to the stink. Sometimes it's strong smelling but smells delicious and other times it's gag worthy. At least it's not fish is all I can think of.

meditated · 27/06/2023 20:59

A colleague used to microwave broccoli and stank up the whole floor.
Is it broccoli, op?

Grabitework · 27/06/2023 21:00

Dunno if it’s worst cauliflower

My first thought too 😅

Lostmum2407 · 27/06/2023 21:09

I am amazed you actually have time to eat lunch AT ALL! I’d just be grateful for that. When I was a teacher I had no time to eat. The staffroom was a ghost town.

TheMoth · 27/06/2023 21:12

Do staff rooms still exist? I've not been in one since about 2008.

You're allowed but there isn't usually much time.

I think YANBU to tell him, but YANBU to think it.

I don't think strongly smelling food should be heated up in communal areas, but I'd be a bit of an arse if I told colleagues that their tuna stinks like cat food. 😂

I agree!

Lunch is unpaid and cannot ha be directed so of course you can leave the site. It would be absolute chaos though as schools no longer pay for enough lunch supervision and they rely on teachers not leaving the site and working for free.

Grabitework · 27/06/2023 21:36

It’s reheating cauliflower and salmon

Don't be daft, of course they do

Workyticket · 27/06/2023 21:50

People can heat and eat whatever they want on their lunch break.

However there is no way op is a teacher.

Fairislefandango · 27/06/2023 21:56

Presumably you cope with food smells if you're in a café or restaurant, including strongly-smelling ones? The fact that you're in a room which you can work in as well as eat in doesn't change the smell.

Do staff rooms still exist? I've not been in one since about 2008.

Of course they do. I've worked in quite a lot of schools since 2008 and they've all had staffrooms! At my school about 15-20 teachers sit around the central tables in the staffroom and chat over lunch every day. It's really nice. I'm always interested to see what other people have brought for lunch and am sometimes a bit jealous!

For simular reasons my child eats in his classroom with other children who find the lunch hall a sensory nightmare.

BlumminKids · 27/06/2023 22:02

I love taking microwavable salmon into work and listening to everyone moaning. I just remind them that their Chippy runs which smell really fatty and unhealthy piss me off just as much, but i suffer in silence. Once a week they moan. Once a week I moan back!

Ilovesandwiches · 27/06/2023 22:05

Let the man eat his lunch

MollysBrolly · 27/06/2023 22:16

We have microwave fish in ours, it bloody reeks

Mummyoflittledragon · 27/06/2023 22:22

Cauliflower and salmon. Yuk. Yes, I think I’d say something. That’s totally lacking in awareness.

ActDottie · 27/06/2023 22:25
