To think Tyrion was the villain?

I mean who cares it ended ages ago but with the sequel of Jon Snow (I think is happening?) I’ve rewatched a few episodes.

He sacrificed Varys to save himself, a friend who saved his life. He was also a crap hand of The Queen. He encouraged Jon to kill Dani.

And he got away with no consequences. Loved him throughout but that final season

The most ridiculous thing in that last episode is that a former slave was given the authority to exile the true heir to the throne.

Once Daenerys was done, her army leader should have been demoted, and considering what happened a generation prior, probably executed for butchering the citizens of Kings Landing.

Instead, he's treated like a regent?

Stupid.

He’s the last man with a standing army….it would have been stupid to execute him.

OMG spoilers much????? Arrgh.
I know, I know, I shouldn't have clicked on it given that I never got around to finishing it but seriously.

I mean it was four years ago and I’m actually shocked you’d have no idea that Jon kills Daenerys. How you avoided spoilers I don’t know.

And there’s no “but seriously”, you clicked on it.

Surely there were a lot more unpleasant people around than Tyrion ?

Lord Baelish.
Jamie
Cerci
Tywin
Stannis.
Melisandre.

All beat Tyrion to title of biggest asshole if you ask me.

But these are obvious villains. And I know no character is black and white - but it’s easy to say who the “bad” ones are.

I think most would class Tyrion as good but I don’t think having a true friend be killed to save himself and play the game makes him good.

WTF! I thought her dragon ate her?

I think most of them were meant to be complex characters.

That ending, though. I still haven't recovered.

King Bran, Doer of Nothing.

Me neither. Biggest TV let down ever.

Wrong series, that was Rhaenyra in house of dragons. And it wasn’t her dragon.

I think most people would class him as amoral and deeply cynical.

I don't think most people would class him as evil.

I don't think he would do evil deeds just for the sake of them - for personal pleasure or maliciousness. I wouldn't have him down as a psychopath - completely ruthless and without pity, although he was capable of being ruthless on occasion.

Ffs - it’s been finished for literally years.

egowise · 27/06/2023 00:24

I loved Jaime. I felt he had the best story arc of all the characters in the series.

It came out in 2011.

It was described by Joffrey in Game of Thrones! About ten years ago.

You've had over four years since the last episode. Dani goes mad and torches women and children on her last remaining dragon. Arya shags Gendry and kills the Night King, Bran is declared king of the seven realms. Jon nopes out after finding out Dani is his Auntie and he's first in line for the throne. Then kills her because she's gone batshit.
Or would you like to wait another four years until you've caught up and we'll all hold our tongues until then?
PS almost fucking every unfortunate or devious bugger dies.

AmadeustheAlpaca · 27/06/2023 00:51

Tyrion was brought up unloved and unwanted by his family with a verbally abusive father. He was only allowed to live so that he could be used as a pawn in the Lannister power games. Jaime was the only family member who cared about him, which was one of Jaime”s redeeming qualities. Given his background, it’s surprising that Tyrion turned out as well as he did.
I liked the Thrones ending, the clues to it are there from the beginning and I suspect that the last two books in the series will never be written as the ending is George’s intended ending as told to the scriptwriters.
I’m interested to know what everyone who was disappointed would have liked to happen as an alternative ending.

LordSalem · 27/06/2023 00:52

King Bran of fuck all he can do to defend his seven kingdoms without loads of other buggers sacrificing themselves Grin

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.
The show writers.

True. G.R. Martin despaired at them after a while.
Ending wasn't bad just not what people were expecting.
Twist probably made it better in some ways?
Sick of happily ever after clichés and fecking disney princessy syndromes ruling the roost.

I agree. I enjoyed the last series. I've given up hope of ever getting the last books in ASOIAF, which is annoying.

Morghulis · 27/06/2023 05:58

The issue wasn’t the overall story points of the ending, it was the execution. The fight with the Night King was far too short - building up this enemy for 7 seasons just to be over in a couple episodes. It should have been a whole season for that. Dany also needed a much longer descent into madness. Instead she went from a “bit ruthless/overreactive at times” to full on mad in a few episodes. It felt jarring and out of character. Ayra barely used the skills she learned other than her one off stab which was dumb and bran’s plot line was also rushed. We could have done with a couple more seasons to do it all properly.

TomPinch · 27/06/2023 06:01

It's not the scriptwriters' fault if GRR Martin can't control the narrative.

Compare LOTR. In the time it takes Frodo and Sam to reach Mordor, Daenerys rides around on a camel, some armies clank about, a few heads get chopped off and everyone fucks each other. Not good writing.

This. Of all the nonsense in the last season, Grey Worm stomping about making his petulant demands and actually being pandered to, was The Absolute Worst!

whiteroseredrose · 27/06/2023 06:51

I've just binge watched all 8 series of GOT with DH, who is a big fan. I think the beauty of it is that there are few Disneyesque goodies and baddies. And all developed over time.

Tyrion is no different. A whoring drunkard but with wit and intelligence. Not a brilliant strategist but tried to avoid too much bloodshed. His plans didn't work possibly because he wasn't ruthless enough.

I actually liked the ending because it was very un Hollywood. No happy ever after.

Grey Worm was the leader of a very strong army and could have taken over in a military coup as has happened in several South American countries. The Lords would step carefully around him.

Abouttimemum · 27/06/2023 06:56

Brienne is the GOAT though

Diddykong · 27/06/2023 06:59

I hate bran. Forcing people to drag him about the north for series after series, then turning up and being so unnecessarily cryptic. And then being like "yeah I'll be the king!" After doing NOTHING.

StormShadow · 27/06/2023 07:01

AspiringMermaid · 26/06/2023 23:11

Tyrion in the show had pretty much zero character development past killing shae, after that all his plans were dumb and failed, he barely added to the story and just was there looking forlorn. I don't think Tyrion had a real choice with varys, as showrunners tried to make the audience have a lot of sympathy for him, boring and likable. Book Tyrion though 100% a villain well worth the read, George.R.R Martin calls Tyrion greyest of the grey

I think as well, Peter Dinklage was just so good. When you have an actor that talented and charismatic they end up making the character likeable!
