Take your rubbish home

I live by the sea. My morning walk along the beach today consisted of overflowing bins, tied up carrier bags and tied up black sacks next to bins. I counted 5 disposable BBQs.

I also saw rubbish strewn everywhere, as the seagulls and foxes had an overnight party opening up bags and feasting on the remains.

I love the visitors. I love what they bring to the town. I enjoy seeing the camper vans parked overnight along the seafront. I don't love the vast swathes of rubbish they leave.

If visiting a beautiful tourist place, put your rubbish in your vehicle and take your mess home with you. Particularly if there's no room in the bin. A black sack next to the bin is completely unacceptable when it can easily go home with you.

My council tax is paying to clear up your daily mess.

YABU - there's a reason there's bins.
YANBU - you should leave places as you find them

You shouldn't leave them when they're still hot anyway.

It's scary how thick some people are though.

Wild fires anyone?

Also things like a hot disposable barbecue aren't easy transportable as they can stay hot for quite a while.

They should be banned.

True! I am curious who they think should then pick them up too? Even my 3 year old knows not to drop litter!

CruCru · 26/06/2023 13:49

Can I also add please don’t put your rubbish in the nearby residents’ wheelie bins? We only get our stuff taken away every fortnight and every summer the inside of the bin gets disgusting - McDonalds wrappers, dog poo bags etc.

Until recently the bin men would have to pull the bags out the bins themselves so would refuse to take anything that wasn’t in a proper rubbish bag.

So it's OK to leave a red hot barbecue on the beach or in the park then? Or on the moors where it can start a catastrophic fire?

Yes.

Then don't use them.

Then provide facilities people can use. Lots of places do.

Engage with tourists. Work with them to enable people to enjoy themselves without damaging the environment.

Some people are joyless fuckers, you basically just don't want to share your beautiful space with anyone else and think if you make it miserable by banning nice activities you will reduce tourist numbers.

if you can't be responsible, don't use a disposable barbecue - how is that joyless?!

It's like people who cry that they need their helium balloons. Yeah, it might kill livestock and wildlife but what do you expect me to do?

I mean seriously. No. Clear up your own barbecue. Not an excuse to leave it behind

theGooHasGone · 26/06/2023 13:58

Presumably the people on this thread who see nothing wrong with discarding all their rubbish somewhere in the general vicinity of an overflowing bin are the exact same people who don't clean their own table at McDonalds, or abandon shopping trolleys in the middle of the car park.

"Not my job is it, someone's paid to do that"

Idle pricks.

I think we could all say the same at this time of year. All my local parks are full of bloody rubbish.

Here too. It's not about "tourists" and it is not the councils job to pick up rubbish after disgustingly entitled pillocks who think that throwing their rubbish on the ground is ok. It's so bad now that you walk past bins that are actually empty or almost so, and they still throw their rubbish on the ground. As for those who say that they have no intention of taking their disgusting rubbish back home in their car because it stinks up their car - it is YOUR rubbish and if you can't behave in a civilised manner then don't go out. Why do you think the environment for everyone else should be filled with your rubbish, that we have to put up with it, and that it should endanger local wild-life.

If the councils have to spend money on anything, I'd vote for people to enforce the rules and huge fines for the disgusting excuses for human beings that think littering is ok.

bonfirebash · 26/06/2023 14:00

This was just some of what we picked up the other day going to a river swim
BBQ, raw chicken, boxes, beer bottles
Yes there's no bins because it's a path through the woods so you bring your rubbish back to the car park bin

Take your rubbish home

80sMum · 26/06/2023 14:01

I honestly don't think it would make any difference if the council provided more bins. Bins attract rubbish. The more bins, the more rubbish there will be.

You'd have to have continuous emptying of the bins several times a day in order to keep up with the flow. Is that really what we want councils to be spending loads of money on?

It's far better if people simply take their own rubbish back home with them and dispose of it properly in their own domestic bins.

And yes, I agree with others that it should be illegal for anyone to sell "disposable" single-use barbecues.

TaxDirector · 26/06/2023 14:01

Of course you douse them, which then means you have a filthy tray of black wet gunge.

What do you really think people should do on holiday?

Stop trying to take the fun out of everything by banning it and instead look for positive solutions. Our economy needs more tourism, not less, look for good solutions that work instead of unworkable, one sided whinges.

  • encourage refillable bottles by providing clean water fountains
  • require cafes to provide bins for their outdoor seating & empty these regularly
  • require cafes to reduce the use of disposable plates/cutlery etc.
  • provide barbecue facilities
  • provide enough public bins and empty them regularly.

The biggest issue is food waste as its grim carrying it home & most of us don't have single use plastic bags any more (good) and it's a grim job cleaning the mess off anything else.

MissTwinklePaws · 26/06/2023 14:12

You can have fun without a disposable barbecue! Most people don't even use them.

Support local businesses rather than polluting beauty spots. You can have a charred burger when you get home, not a big deal.

Some areas don't need more tourism to be honest, what value to the local economy are people bringing bbq food probably brought in a supermarket to an area? How many people visit the beach with bags of pre made crusty ass sandwiches and hot dogs in thermos flasks (bork) without spending a penny in local businesses and all the while causing traffic mayhem for locals and pushing up prices? People say it supports the economy as they pay inflated prices for stuff, locals pay that too! I know you can't stop people but honestly aside from some areas that don't have many people year round most would be just dandy.

ProudToBeANorthener · 26/06/2023 14:23

but you took it with you so surely it just fits into the space to go home again, doesn’t it?

saveforthat · 26/06/2023 14:28

The council are actually removing bins in our seaside town and the ones that are left have a metal plate screwed across them leaving a hole the size of a tennis ball for waste. I agree that daytrippers should take their rubbish home. The amount of rubbish left on the beach is disgusting. What do people think will happen when the tide comes in and goes out again

Throwncrumbs · 26/06/2023 14:29

i agree with you…just looking at all the rubbish left in the Glastonbury camp ground for others to clean up, not just actual waste, it’s abandoned camping equipment because they cannot be arsed to take their tent/chairs/sleeping bags with them. Then you get the comments like’ it can be used for homeless people’ umm no, homeless people do not want your piss soaked tent, your vomit covered sleeping bag or your broken chairs!

Wildandwonderful · 26/06/2023 14:32

The bottom line is that we need to stop creating so much rubbish.

If takeaways and supermarkets stopped selling stuff that created rubbish then there would be a lot less.

People also need to stop buying all this c..p.

It’s obvious that people who think cleaning up after themselves and moan about ‘the joyless fuckers’ not wanting to share their space are people who are as common as muck and live in a grim shit covered hovel and think everyone else should too!

Quite. They are a relatively recent thing anyway. People managed to have picnics before.

TaxDirector · 26/06/2023 14:57

No, I don't. I think it belongs in the bin, and given that its messy and smelly to transport food waste, the best way to do that is to have suitable, regularly emptied bins, so that messy food waste can be transported by purpose designed rubbish truck, instead of leaking all over bags, leaving oily spots on bus seats, smelling out train carriages etc.

No one thinks its ok to litter. People also do not want to transport filthy food waste in their back pack and thats ok.

Daftasabroom · 26/06/2023 15:02

Weal · 26/06/2023 10:03

I’d say the council should be emptying the bins more frequently than they do and putting more bins in. There seems to be a big variance in the quality of bins/recycling in different local authorities. Some have lots of bins, regular street cleaning and recycling bins. I would have thought somewhere that attracts a lot of visitors would have used some of the money gained through that to maintain the street cleanliness.

I agree people should put rubbish in bins and take home if possible to recycle. It’s not realistic though that people will drive houses with food waste (things like left overs from BBQs) in their car.

What money do local councils get from tourists?

Of course it's realistic to take any kind of waste home, after all you took it there in the first place before it became waste.
